ok, everyone knows that kaname's hair is always depicted as blue (except in the black and white images)
but I was just reading the first novel and it describes kaname's hair as being black... what gives? what color is her hair!!??

Her hair color is officially black. (Since the novels came before anything else, I consider that 'official')
Anime Hair color is decided by the artist creating the character, not the author of the novel, although he/she does have input into the process.

On my behalf, I'd say her hair is blue. Why do I think so? Because basically every darker hair colour is presented as black. The solution might be looking at the covers... But I might be wrong - haven't really read the novels. I'll just keep saying her hair is blue

hmhm,
my opinion is that kaname's hair, as an anime-character, is blue. but because anime is fictional and to some point a copy of reality, kaname, as a real-life person, would have black hair, because she is japanese and most japanese have black hair. additionally there isn't too much difference in black and her dark blue hair.
just my thoughts about this.

Good point. But to be honest - I haven't met anime where characters look typical for their nationalities - foreigners are ALWAYS exaggerated
spelling?, and all Japanese are oh-so-cool-sexy-looking (not that I mind it, though
)

true true,
kurz is japanese, too, is he?
#24- Law of Americanthromorphism- Americans in Anime appear in one of two roles,
either as a really nasty skinny "Bad Guy" or a big stupid "Good Guy".
First Corollary- The only people who are more stupid than the big dumb
Americans are the American translators. (Sometimes referred to as the Green Line
Effect)
Second Corollary- The only people who are more stupid than the American
translators are the American editors and censors.
*Third Corollary- Canadians are usually portrayed as smart, strong, handsome
"Good Guys".

Mao is not Japanese either, She's Chinese-American.
Perhaps he was being sarcastic about him and Mao.

If we're thinking of the same episode, I think he said "there are no japanese people here"

Kurz is German but he went to school in Japan until he was 14 so he speaks Japanese better than Sousuke does. Melissa is Chinese American and is also fluent in Japanese for some reason they have not mentioned so far. Sousuke is of Japanese descent, but he didn't grow up there. Kaname is Japanese and lived both there and New York at different stages in her life. Her hair is black. It is colored blue in the artwork because it looks pretty that way.
That is all.

Speculations you say? Ok. I Speculate that Kurz is the Illegitimate child of Mao.........
Mao: I *AM* your Mother!!!!
Kurz: NNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mao: Search your feelings, you know it is to be true!!!
Kurz: WWWWWAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!
Mao: Join me and we'll rule the universe as mother and son!!
*Kurz throws himself off the deck of the TDD

o.O I didn't think any of what I said was really spoilers. Most of it is mentioned in the first couple of episodes or not particularly central to the plot. Well, at least not in a way that's going to spoil anything.
Also, I'm liking Killer's theory. It seems pretty likely to me!
