Part 9
Darres lay awake on the sofa. He could hear Sousoke was breathing deep; he should be in REM by now. Darres rolled onto his back. It was useless; he was not going to sleep tonight. His mind was not as busy as the night before and still Darres could not sleep. Darres sat up throwing the sheet off him. What was his problem? It’s not like Natasha didn’t sleep a room away from him every other night of the past month, so it couldn’t be that. Darres looked at the paper on the coffee table. That was the reason, because tomorrow there would be an AS made just for him. Why had Natasha picked him to be the one? He had not prior training with an AS. Sure he had been given a basic Mithril style training before being let out on the “field”. But this was the deep end of the ocean and off the map for Darres. Darres went over to the bathroom and looked in the mirror.
“What have you gotten yourself into Darres?” he asked himself. Darres gave himself one good look. Only crazy people talk to themselves, Darres told himself. He lay back down and attempted to go to sleep. It would be hours before Darres got up again.
“Help!” Kaname shouted from the bedroom. Her voice was terrified she was standing at the door with a sheet white face. “It’s-It’s Natasha. There’s something wrong with her.” Kaname pointed into the room. Natasha was on top of the covers, her arms and legs moving in all different directions. Natasha’s entire body was shaking. She was sweating like she had just run a marathon.
“Darres, what’s wrong with her?” Kaname now noticed that Darres was only in boxers and was regretting her cry for help a little, oh well too late now. Sousoke had grabbed pants, he knew Kaname better than to just go in his boxers. Both Natasha and Kaname were wearing night t-shirts. Natasha's happened to be more of a tank top, but both girls had on shorts. Kaname rolled her eyes, oh well.
“She’s having a nightmare, or something like it.” Darres wiped some of the sweat off Natasha. “Get me a damp towel, use cold water.” Kaname came back moments later. Darres wrapped the towel around Natasha’s neck. Her arms and legs stopped moving but she was still shaking.
“What now?” Kaname asked.
“You go back to sleep. I can handle this, I have been doing this for a week now.” Darres told Kaname. It took a minute or two more to convince her to leave it to him. In the end Kaname went back to bed. Darres looked to make sure that Kaname was not watching, she seemed to not trust him. When he was certain Darres wrapped his arms around Natasha tight enough that it was close to crushing her. He had done this every night for the past six days. It seemed to be the only way to stop Natasha’s shaking. Darres ran his hand through her hair, messaging her head.
“Natasha, it’s okay, it’s not real. Come on Natasha, please calm down, just relax your mind and breath deep. You can do it, it’s not real.” Darres whispered into her ear. Darres knew that Natasha could hear him. She was able to hear anything that was said while she was sleeping. Darres was hoping she could pick this up on her radar.
“No. This time it’s not a dream, it’s real.” Natasha said sounding very winded and out of breathe. “They took Loki and nearly killed Kit. We have to help them.” Natasha’s eyes were watering, she was crying. She wasn’t looking at Darres when she talked, she kept her head down.
“Look at me.” Darres said, Natasha just turned her head away from him. Darres grabbed her chin and pulled her to face him. “It’s okay, Loki and Kit are fine. It was just a dream, and besides those boys can stand up to anything.” Darres reassured her. Natasha just shook her head; she wrapped her arms around Darres neck. He could tell that she was really frightened by this dream. Darres patted Natasha on her head; he could feel her tears streaming down her face and on to his neck. Darres let Natasha stay that way for a long time, it wasn’t until he realized that she was asleep did he remove her grip on him and lay her back down.
Darres headed back for the other room and the sofa. When he got to the doorway Kaname was blocking his way out.
“So, have you been doing this every night?” Kaname inquired, looking not too happy.
“Yeah, for the last week or so. It’s been worse the last few days though.” Darres said looking back at the sleeping girl.
“Good.” Kaname smiled. “You break her heat I’ll break your neck. Got it.” Darres was a little taken back, this is not what he had been expecting. “Night.” Kaname said now looking much happier than a moment ago. Darres deiced that girls just had fun toying with him. What was Kaname talking about? Sure he cared about Natasha, but dating her would be too much trouble. The boys would have a party with all the new ways to bother him. Besides, he was becoming a part time AS pilot this was not the time to get involved with a girl. But then again Natasha was like no other person he had ever meet.
Darres smacked himself. He had a job to do tomorrow, he needed his sleep.
As Darres drifted off into sleep the last though he had was how good it felt to hold Natasha in his arms.
