Chidori's external appearance is a facade

I read somewhere that because of her background, she has developed a "tough-lady" attitude, perhaps a façade to protect herself from being hurt again. What happened in her past that caused her to create this attitude?

This is what's given to us:

Background:
April, 2001 - Enters Tokyo Jindai Public High School
March, 2001 - Kaname’s father and sister move to New York, USA
August, 1998 - Kaname’s mother, Shizu, dies of cancer
July, 1998 - 3 days house detention for malicious damage to school property
May, 1998 - Returns to Tokyo with family and enters local junior high school
October, 1996 - Wins 2nd place in Orange County track and field tournament
August, 1994 - Moves to suburban New York, USA with family
July, 1993 - Wins 1st place in junior swimming competition, Chofu, Tokyo
May, 1992 - Runs away from home. Registered as missing at Izumigawa Police Department. Located and returned home the following day.
December, 1984 - Born in Tokyo, Japan

There's also some speculation that after her mother died, she never cut her again. (Since we see her with short hair and her mother died 3 years ago)

She doesn't want to be hurt again like she was hurt when her mom died. That's why in the End of Day by Day she goes, for a period of time, crazy that she can't trust anyone.

We're not given alot of specifics, but the above entries are all difficult/negative/unsettling events in a kid's life.

July, 1998 - 3 days house detention for malicious damage to school property
May, 1992 - Runs away from home. Registered as missing at Izumigawa Police Department. Located and returned home the following day.

These entries are K's bad behavior- perhaps just misbehaving, but more probably acutally point to her dealing with life. The July entry is placed in a very obvious way (look at the two entries surrounding it).

Kaname also told Tessa a little of her difficulty re-adjusting to Japan, and implied that she survived crushing rejection and depression.

I'd say Kaname's outward personality is very obviously a shielding facade- one that's very reasonable and even common IRL as a coping method some people adopt. It doesn't result from just one mega-incident, but builds slowly and is frequently reinforced. Evidence that it's a facade is present in how uncertian and unconfident she is in private.

And that's not even touching the mother issue yet.

I just saw something interesting. Kaname entered Jindai High in April. Sousuke also entered the school in April which was the middle of the school year, I presume. Where did Kaname go to high school before that if she'd been in Tokyo since 1998? How'd she get to be class rep and student council VP so quickly within her first month of being there? Heck, how'd she get so popular so quickly?

The Japanese school year starts in April. Highschool is grades 10 to 12 iirc. So in April 2001 she would still be 16 (Her 17th birthday would be that year, unless I can't count after all), a natural age to enter 10th grade. Where was she before? Junior High, presumably. And if it's an escalator school, then she might have been at Jindai Junior High, which would explain some of your other questions (this, I am not so sure about, but it's likely).

Um, probably because most of her classmates are from the same JrHS, not to mention that she may have had some friends (say Kyouko) from before she went to America. "May, 1998 - Returns to Tokyo with family" obviously means she's from that area to begin with. Therefore we can safely assume she'd have some grade school friends there as well.

Oh, yeah, I think the big thing was about how her classmates were being spiteful and mean, forgot about that. Man...you can find the information of those dates on ADV's official Full Metal Panic! website on her profile. I thought everybody has scoured that site and many others for information on the Full Metal Panic! universe...

The Student Body Association thing about her being vice president is because she is the "No.1 idol that nobody wants as his own girlfriend." Look at her in the perspective of the rest of the students and me, she's hot, smart, athletic, popular, normal(on the outside...), and is fiery enough to fight hard in being a member of the Student Body Association Committee.

Actually... 11th grade: 16/17 and 12th grade: 17/18. So they can't be first year students. Besides, they're always refered to as second year students.

I asked Brandi about it. The anime has a different time line from the novels. So it's off by about a year.
