Cold fusion reactors

Post by Ender_06 »

Well I'm still writing my fan fiction (if you guys remember) (I'm up to 24 pages/3 chapters currently) and I'm wondering about cold fusion, as the TDD has two reactors (if O remember correctly) I'm wondering how they are built, and how you extract energy from the reactor, as cold fusion implies room temp and not too much higher.

The reason I'm asking is because I'm at a point where one of the reactors need to be serviced. Currently I'm thinking about a Tokamak reactor design. But that is normal fusion and not cold..... Any links or info out there?

On a side note i found a link, if that is true well we have cold fusion...:

and of course wiki. (but the ones mentioned in wiki are cold fusion test cells...)

"Electrolytic" Cold fusion; where the fusion is cold but the result isn't. :)

Cold Palladium reactor 101 <grin>

You have a big rod har har of palladium called the electrode and place it in a bucket of heavy water (deuterium oxide) than pass an electrical current through the water and according to them science nerds the palladium catalyzes fusion by allowing deuterium atoms to get close enough for fusion to occur. KICK ASS !!!!!!!!!!!

Now what does this mean....

Right now we use nuclear fission to generate power. In nuclear fission, you get energy from splitting one atom into two atoms.

To make it very very simple
atom split => energy & more neutrons & stuff, mucho heat => KABOOOM !!!! => nasty stuff

Now the same goes for fusion:

atom fuse => engery, mucho heat => KABOOOOM !!!!! but less of the nasty stuff.

So how would a "cold" fusion reactor look like

I'm thinking you need solid heat and pressure resistant container, palladium rods, a bigass waterpump for the deterium flow, you need heat exchangers and definitely turbines and a shitload of reduction gears.

Tadaa a million things that would need maintenance.

Yeah I skipped the chain reation 101, neutrons going wild and stuff but lets keep it simple.

Oh the Tokamak reactor is way too big, unless the TDD1 has the size of a Borg cube .. :P

Thanks thats what I thought, changing story... now.

That would be interesting though the TDD being the size of a borg cube.

"we gotta go to the other side of the ship...."

Fyi The TDD has 3 main reactors and they can be shutdown for maintenance.
