I liked the manga much better the movie was to condensed and I find most live action movies especially foreign ones to be under budget and not really that good.

Hey SOULS_LEADER do you own a Sig 228 in the pic on the bottom or is it just pic for fun?

I saw the movie and read most of the manga.

The movie seems more human to me. The kids are normal kids. It's extremely bloody, but not nearly as overdone as the manga.

The manga goes for a bit of shock value with its gore. It's unrealistic and possibly unnecessary, but I can overlook it. It really brings the characters to life. Almost all of them have their own unique story and histories with each other, which really brings this tragedy together. It loses a bit of its humanity by making the class what is probably the most hardcore freshman class in history but it does make it entertaining.

Hell, there are at least three students who are completely insane, a few who are capable of being rapists, a few more who have killed people before, several world-class atheletes, and two who's martial arts skills rival those of the masters of old.

And you can't convince me that Kawada is a freshman. And don't give me that about him being held back a year. 16 year olds, don't look like that. The guy's got facial hair, a receding hairline, and more muscles than any Japanese 16-year-old in history. He looks more like he's 30. >_<

As far as I'm concerned, Battle Royale the novel > the manga > the movie. The novel was fantastic--so much so that I read all 616 pages in two days, and I've now read it in its entirety about four times. The manga...eh. I've only read two volumes, and I'm still not entirely sure whether I particuarly like it. The movie was cheesy and over-the-top, and several of the characters fell incredibly flat. Kazuo Kiriyama, in particular, was turned into a silent psychopath, rather than the cool, calm, and collected emotionless killer he was in the novel. Novel!Kiriyama was terrifying because he was physically incapable of feeling anything; Movie!Kiriyama was just crazy and ridiculous, and he died in a much stupider way than his novel counterpart.

As for Shogo Kawada, he was absolutely brilliant in the novel, not to mention insanely tough, and I don't think they did that great a job adapting his character in the film. Shinji Mimura, whose story was actually a key part of the novel, had far less screentime than he should have, and Hiroki Sugimura, who was the epitome of coolness and emotional integrity in the novel (and thus I am eternally amused by the fact that the first name of the actor who played him in the film is "Sousuke"), was kind of a wuss. That was a letdown.

Shuya Nanahara and Noriko Nakagawa were actually done very well, except in the novel their weapons were different--Noriko had a boomerang for some reason, and Shuya had an army knife. No pot lid and binoculars.

My favorite character, the psychotic Mitsuko Souma, was also characterized well in the movie, even if her backstory wasn't fully explained.

I guess I'm just really biased; I absolutely adored the novel, and the other two mediums just fall flat in comparison.

Hmm. Sounds to me like the manga follows much closer to the novel than the movie. I wonder if all the characters are still over the top with their talents in the novel. Is there and English version of it available or is it one of those fan-translated things?

English version.

Huh, it was more expensive when I bought it. I paid the full list price.

The characters are very talented in the novel as well, especially Shinji, the super-hacker.

Yep borders does carry BR. And BR2 was kinda of a let down.

Uh huh, the only thing cool about BR2 is that the actor who plays Motoki in PGSM is in it... he plays Shintaro Makimura in BR2 and dies in the very begining. So after that, the movie sucked even more. :-P

My Favorite Character is Mimura and Sugi. Mimura in the novel and the manga was sly and clever and Sugi didn't want to kill anyone, he just wanted to protect that one girl (Forgot her name) and his best friend died (Takako). The movie vrs was alot more horrible cause he was killed by the woman he fell in love with. Why couldn't he fight Kiriyama :?
