My oddball theory is that being a whispered is passed down through bloodlines ("learning? you knew this from BEFORE your were born"), and as Kaname's whispered state began to awaken, she saw a memory of one f her ancestor's being hung. Adding that theory to the chanting music, it would seem like in the olden times, whispered's were treated like witches and hung.

Thats however is just a product of my deranged imagination.

Passed through the bloodline is evidenced by Tessa's statement that her brother is also Whispered. If it wasn't genetic, what would the chances be both of them were Whispered?

Interesting theory. Yeah, a Whispered would seem insane and in superstitious societies killing such a menace would be the norm, I'd imagine.

What I'd find interesting to know was the "black technology" just ahead of current technology? Such as when swords were common issue, "black technology" was rifles?

What are the long term effects of being Whispered, if you didn't get drugged up like the girl? Could being Whispered be the cause of Kaname's mother's death?

...it could have something to do with societal fears.

Another possibility is suicide... as in the same ep, we see Kaname
beginning to lose her mind as she cannot control the nascent
Whispered powers within her.

The whole Wh thing is something I wondered about alot- it appears to be genetic, or at least by some other mechanisim, shows in the same familiy.

All of the Wh we know about are in the same age range. (the eldest being Tessa's bro, who's age isn't known to me, but he seems about Sousuke's age range).

With the exception of the Whispered-created LD systems, the majority of other technology in the FMP world is more or less similar (or the same) as our own. (Arm Slaves being the exception, but those are not Wh-derived)

With these factors in mind I always tended to believe that Whispered was a new phenom in the FMP world. If Wh had always existed, even in very small numbers, world tech would be more advanced than our own, and/or the scientists working with Wh would know more (instead of playing with the unknown). At least that's my theory.

I guess I have to wonder if Wh is a new evolution in humans, or is it the result of experiments?... modern living? .. accidental exposure to something? It could help explain why Wh looks genetic, but might not acutally be. Perhaps just affected moms can produce Wh kids.
If it's experiment- fallout, or exposure- that could also explain how it was known who had a chance of being Wh. Anyway, that's the cleanest theory I could come up with, on what little info I had. I'm not totally attatched to it, but I kinda question if it really could be something that always existed.

BTW- when I saw that ep 6 with Kaname's hallucination, I could never figure out if she was seeing herself, or that girl, hung. With the face down, and similar hair, it drove me nuts til I forgot about it

Kaname was high on the drugs she was given in ep 4/5. We know Wh can share psychic experiences- but if the UNK girl is dead and K didn't know about her, how could she see her? IMO it was those drugs that drove the UKN girl and Takuma crazy, as well as making Kaname experience that psycho episode in #6. Grrr...more questions that I haven't thought about in a looong time

I always thought the episode 1 redhead was Kaname's sister. She did have a redhead sister according to her family pictures during the ed credits. And I always assumed that the Whisper thing ran in the family since Tessa and her bro shared that mad skillz. Of course I'm probably entirely wrong and way out in deep left field.

Okay well hair color is different but that could be because of lighting effects (the rest of the body is greyed) so it could quite possibly be her. What does that tell us? Not a whole lot, if anything the it just introduces more question. Okie dokie, while you guys are out scratching your head and losing sleep over this, I've got to stand post tonight and hand out candy for those annoying kids. Good luck, tell me what you find out

Besides ... if she was taken to the homebase .. i'm pretty sure they don't have trees like that on a tropical island ..

Kaname has her first vision when Sousuke is on his 'trying to make a signal fire' mission. Remember when he goes to leave, and S+K have a 'I'll be back' moment?

And when Sousuke gets back, Kaname had, uh, reacted to Kurtz having checked her out.

In fact, Sousuke isn't even around Kaname when she's having a vision or a Whispered moment until towards the end of the series (and not even really then). He's always off fighting or doing something else.

Actually I got worried about her involvement when I believe at the very beginning of 'the mission' (protecting chidori), they were discussing pseudonyms, and Sousuke's response to using his own name was that no on in that area knows it; I thought maybe she would prove to be some link, as he gave her his name.

Of course nothing of the sort happened.

The girl chidori most likely sees is herself, no? Body doesn't really match; hair kinda matches, but contextually it makes the most sense that way.

Thanks for the welcome, Taurec. I rewatched the first episode and the resemblance is uncanny--hair, dress, and figure are an exact match. So much for my babble.
