Caught Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle and Star Wars 8,
Jumanji - reason to see it was Karen Gillian, of Dr Who and Guardians Of The Galaxy fame. Reason not to see
it was Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, and every pose / shot basically calling for him to yell, "Can you SMEEEEELL!
What the Rock is cooking?" Surprisingly, wasn't alot of that, and was amusing to see Karen do the nonsexy / nonsex symbol
thing, but when she's called to pull out the can of whupass! Oh boy, does she! Admittedly, seeing Dwayne called
to do "smouldering" was different for him, and pulled off not to badly. Not big on the short black dude, and
Jack Black's fascination with how much easier it is having guy equipment for going to the washroom, while funny,
would DEFINITELY lead to an embarassing "facts of life" conversation with your daughter(s).
There is a linkage made to the original Jumanji that's neither here nor there. It's sad that Robin W isn't with
us anymore, as I would've liked to have seen him in the film in some fashion. Will have to go back for a rewatch
of this sometime.
Star Wars 8 : didn't like how #7 was basically a blatant plagerism of A New Hope... final assessment from me is
another plagerism of SW5, and had a rearend with some SW6 plot elements. Specific points :
- rebel base evac... TWICE in the film.
- battle on the surface of hoth, but this time in salt
- jedi training on secret planet
- go to a nice place a la cloud city, but not to hide
Almost thought they'd bring Lando Calarissian out for this, but guess I was wrong.
I do have to admit the opening scene, while implausible as HELL!!, did bring a tear to my eyes. Methinks they got
some WW2 bomber pilot stories from the European Theather and built from that.
Also have to admit some of the characters I could get emotionally invested in, like Rose and the female Awing pilot.
I wanted to get invested in Laura Dern's character, but while she could handle the role, her clothing was WAAAAAY off!
Dressed more like a runway fashion model than a VAdm in a military situation. Also her interactions with Poe were
so cliche and hackneyed.
I do like how Yoda was brought back for a final "master to student" moment, sort of as a "final life lesson" thing.
Endingwise, almost thought and wish they left it at a cliffhanger... one of the few times I wanted a cliffhanger
ending rather than a clean ending. Honestly thing it'd've worked better, but oh well.
