Video on ADV's Fumo V1

I haven't opened my v1 DVD yet, however there have been reports of fluked video quality- mostly the typical sort that is easiest to see on high end and HD set-ups. (rainbows, crawling, pixelating, ect)

It doesn't appear to be bad enough to ruin it for most viewers, and right now it's unknown why the R1 video is subpar compared to the japanese release, but supposedly ADV is looking into it.

This is just a heads-up, for people who think an issue like this is important enough to take a wait-and-see postion before buying.

When I get a chance, I'll watch mine and report what I see, and perhaps might post some comparasion screencaps I've stolen from someone else
If anyone who's already seen the R1 V1 wants to give their thoughts, please do.

i've watched mine and it looked fine. However, my system uses a GPS TBCIV to clean up the video.

watched it on my laptop, which may not be the way to bring out the problems
you mentioned Jae, but I didn't notice anything attention grabbing. I'll rewatch
on a few setups and see if anything pops out

Well.

I did watch V1 a while ago, and it was clearly sub-par compared to the R2 that I also have, video wise. But it all fell within what I guess could be considered acceptable for anime on dvd, circa 2001.
It wasn't a painful experience, but ADV's V1 was totally unusuable for screencaps. But I decided to keep my trap shut until V2, esp since an ADV rep claimed he'd look into it.

But V2 seems to be worse. I'm not sure what this is called, but whole areas of video around outlines pixellate and blink even when the outline itself isn't moving, in addition to outlines looking choppy. There's a fuzzy grainy texture that appears in some shots, but not consistently (ie, it's on Kaname, but absent in a quick shot of Kyouko.)
Every now and then, I see a shot that looks okay, good even, but they're always minimal-motion shots.

This is just on my new laptop, I haven't had access to my big tv in a while (longterm houseguest ), but this can't be limited to my set-up. I just watched V1 of Twelve Kingdoms, which was pretty damn gorgeous. And the GITS SAC dvds have looked good, too. (neither of which is an ADV release, I must note)
Fumo looked the worst in fullscreen, but playing it at normal size didn't clean up the way it looked

This may not be ADV's fault, and it might be something they can do nothing about, but I can still be mad at one of their reps who's attitude was 'It's good enough to enjoy it'. I'll still buy ADVs, but with reluctance.

Those sound like problems with the decoder. I don't have V2 yet, but V1 was clear on my set. I don't play DVDs in PC's as sometimes the PC has trouble keeping up, especially with the PC's sub par DVD codecs (and lets not forget Window$). You simply can't beat a hardware solution with software.

When I get my hands on V2, I'll let you know (by that time, I'll have my 60" widescreen TV... mwahahahahahahahah, Kaname in Progressive scan glory O_O :perv: ).
