Fox Hunt...
Chapter 2
He came back; he finally came back; after so long, I waited so long. Sousuke Sagara came home, he came back for me. Will he leave me again, for another mission, to see her, or to save the world again; to be the unsung hero.
I sat in the classroom 3-4, another boring day, but then he showed up in class. I heard some gasp, *giggle* I even let out a gasp myself, not in surprise... more like... relief. I gazed into his eyes as he gazed back, the door to my heart opened up again and I let it show, just a bit. “Welcome back Sousuke.” From the look on his face I could tell that he understood what I said, why wouldn’t he, being a secret mercenary soldier for the champions of justice and all.
The day seemed like any other day, the occasional boy asking to go out with me, well that became normal soon after Sousuke left. I felt much better when he was around, he was the only disturbance in life, but he was a good one. Later on in the day my fan got a nice work out, hmph Otaku bashing. Sousuke had suspected that our teacher was a terrorist so he planted a minor concussion grenade in her desk. The plan was simple, if she reached for anything that could be a hazard towards me she would get a flash bang in her face. Needless to say that a hospital visit was in order for our teacher, what a good impression Sousuke had made on her.
Later on during lunch Sousuke discovered some burnt lunch rolls, and after careful examination Sousuke discovered minor traces of Nitrogen. He determined that they were trying to poison me or to create an explosive that would be used in the kidnapping or something like that. Another crazy Otaku stunt, just like the good ol’days. Boom, a concussion grenade caused half the schools kitchen to go up in flames, three of the cafeteria faculty was sent to the hospital.
I walked up and tapped Sousuke’s shoulder, “hey Sousuke.”
He swiftly turned towards me, “yes Kaname?”
I grinned, “let me reintroduce you to Halisen!!!” Bam, those with wings shall fly, those with out just fall, and that’s exactly what happened. Sousuke hit the ground, two stories below us. He then proceeded to stand, dust himself off, and grinned.
“Not a problem.” Even though he did blow up half the cafeteria, he still managed to bring a smile to my face.
About half an hour later as I was walking to P.E. I saw Sousuke laying some round black objects on the baseball field. Immediately I ran over to his position yelling. “Sousuke!!!!”
He turned to me with a questioning look, “yes Kaname?”
I balled a fist and cringed as I pointed to the black objects he was placing in the ground, “what are those?”
Sousuke being Sousuke quickly answered my question thoroughly and precisely, he told me everything I did not want to hear. “Well Kaname, as ordered I have set traps for any possible kidnappers, or terrorist. These mines will not kill a person but merely cause a minor discomfort to the eyes, nose, and will cause some minor breathing problems. If they manage to step on the mine itself they are in for a very uncomfortable flight.”
BAM.... BOOM.... SLAM!! “I should join the major leagues, hmph.” I walked away from the site knowing that when Sousuke landed he wouldn’t be grounded for very long. When I made it back to class I heard the sweet sound of Sousuke screaming in pain, just like the good ol’days.
I know, I know... It was mean of me but I did try to make up for it, but I think in the end this will turn out better for me. It was about six in the afternoon, I had just finished cooking a large dinner; a feast fit for a king. I packed some of the food, preparing to give it to Sousuke as an apology. When I had finished packing the food I decided to fix my hair, make it nice. Some time passed by and I walked over to my window. There he was, gorgeous, his figure illuminated by the gentle rays of the setting sun. I smiled and grabbed the food I had prepared earlier.
I had just made it to his door and sat down when he arrived, I stood up and smiled handing him the box. “Here Sousuke,” I noticed his smile, “I made this for you thinking that it’s been awhile since you’ve had some decent food. I had some free time while you were still at school.”
He took the box from me after he helped me up, it was when I began to walk down the hall when my heart skipped a beat. “Kaname,” it wasn’t just spoken like he would normally say it, Sousuke shouted it, like in desperation to keep me there.
I made a sharp turn with a big smile spread across my face, “yes Sousuke.”
Thinking to myself I couldn’t help but giggle noticing he was blushing. ‘He’s is so cute... I wonder what is on his mind to make him blush like that.’ “Um... Will you please eat this with me?” It was my turn, my cheeks flushed as blood rushed to my face. He could say some of the friendliest things, but with out intent, he could make it sound like something more, like he wanted more.
Gliding over to him I held a smile, placing my arm under his. “Sure Sousuke, I’d love too.” Little did I know Kyouko was coming over to my apartment to talk about something and ended up following me here, not only that but she had brought her camera.
Once inside Sousuke flipped the light switch, “it may not be as nice as your apartment yet but still,” he grinned, “we managed to improve the living quality of the safe house.” I was left with an obvious curiosity, what had he done to his apartment. He opened the second door revealing a beautiful arrangement of flowers, paintings, and furniture. His kitchen was gorgeous, filled with top-notch equipment, the couch was, wait is that real leather. Of course he still had his surveillance equipment, but he had it tucked away out of sight.
“So do you like what you see Kaname,” I smiled and then was thrown into a quick fit. I threw a punch at Sousuke, hitting him square in the chest, but he didn’t even flinch. He gazed at me in shock, “ Ka-Kaname, what was that for?”
I stared at him, his eyes so piercing but so gentle. I smiled, “nothing nothing. So where did all of this stuff come from, and why did you get it.”
“Well, because of you.” I blushed.
“Me?”
He smiled, “yes Kaname, I thought that if you needed to stay here at the safe house, for whatever reasons, you might as well enjoy your time here. I had Sgt. Major Mao and some of her friends from the states come and fix up this place. Mithril agreed to fund them seeing as this is an important investment, but mostly I had this done for you.”
I blushed again, god this clueless moron didn’t even know what he was doing to me did he. Still sustaining a smile I walked over and hugged him. I thought to myself ‘hmph this is the perfect revenge, he is probably still clueless about what to do when a girl hugs him.’ To my surprise he slid his arms around me and pulled me in close. I could hear his heart beating wildly in his chest that told me everything he couldn’t say.
For the first time I felt like I wanted time to stand still, it may not have been a kiss but it was good enough for now. I looked up at Sousuke, his face was so calm, his eyes seemed to glow. Little did I realize that at the very moment a few classmates wanting to welcome back Sousuke would shatter my romantic moment with Sgt. Sousuke Sagara.
Kurz walked in, along with Maya, Kazama, Ren, and Mizuki. By the way, I’m pretty sure Ren and Maya forced Mizuki to come. I jumped of Sousuke and dusted myself off, I prayed to god that no one saw me hugging him like that, at least not yet.
Maya strolled up to Sousuke and smiled, “welcome back Sgt. Sagara.” Apparently people still haven’t forgotten about the day Sousuke came to school that very first day. What surprised me was Sousuke didn’t salute, nor did he disapprove, he just stood there smiling.
Ren was next, she smiled and bowed then pat Sousuke’s shoulder. Kazama just waved and shouted, “welcome home Sousuke!!!”
Kyouko walked in a handed me her camera. I looked through the pictures and saw one that caught my interest. I saw Kyouko grinning and smiled, “delete,” I spoke softly. Instantly I pushed the delete button, no more picture.
The young girl seemed to be tearing up, damn guilt trips. I patted her shoulder and smiled, “maybe I’ll let the next one slide.” I walked over to the door, took one glance back and smiled. “Who ever thought that Otaku could get normal friends here.”
As I entered the hallway I bumped into Mao, “whoa Miss Chidori, are you visiting Sousuke??” She was grinning, why was everyone grinning. Melissa took one look inside and laughed, “looks like your little Otaku is having a party.”
“Yeah...” Melissa stared at me, why was I acting so strange. It was because Sousuke wasn’t paying attention to me. I was so relieved that he came back alive, so overwhelmed with emotions that I could have told him how I felt about him when he first got back.
After Melissa walked into the room I sat down in the hallway. Bringing my knees to my chest I began to cry. I knew everyone in the room was too busy to notice me, but then I heard Kurz yelling, “hey Sousuke.... Where ya going??” I didn’t faze me, I just kept sobbing.
I felt a hand on my shoulder, “Kaname, I’m sorry.” I turned to see who was talking to me, it was Sousuke, but why was he sorry. “you’re crying again, I have a feeling this is my fault as well.” I had to keep from grinning, of course it was his fault, he is suppose to pay attention to me. My next action not only took Sagara by surprise, but myself as well.
I jumped up and threw my arms around Sousuke, I hugged him, for always being there for me, for helping me through the toughest situations. He grinned, “it’s not a problem.” Did he know why I was hugging him? The biggest surprise came when he gently pulled me in closer.
“Sagara?”
He had me in his embrace, I felt so warm then. It felt so right, like how things were suppose to be. “Kaname... I need to speak with you in private.” He led me to a janitorial closet and closed the door behind him. He frowned when he looked at me, “Kaname, I am not here on orders to protect you. In fact I’m not even suppose to be in Japan at this time. I convinced my superior officers to let me, Kurz, and Mao spend time in Tokyo before my next mission.”
I stared at him, “mission?”
“Affirmative, at 0400 hours tomorrow I will be leaving for Kyoto with Arbalest. Yakuza in the area have come into contact with a prototype arm slave, the M-10. It has the same abilities as Arbalest but at a lower level.” He stared at me, his eyes yearning for something. Our eyes met and I knew what his heart wanted, someone to be there for him, like had been for me.
“This mission seems like an easy one.” He opened the door and glanced down towards his room. “At least they told us it would be an easy mission. I have a faint feeling that I will be thrust into a conflict that could alter Japan’s stability, at least if they figured out how the Lambda driver works.”
I began to tear up, I wanted to tell him how I felt about him, how much he meant to me. “Sousuke I...” Sadly my emotions got the better of me, I starting crying. Why did this one man need to carry the weight of the world on his shoulders. I fell into his arms shedding tears uncontrollably.
He cradled my head against his chest and whispered to me, “it’s alright Kaname, please don’t cry anymore. I’ll come back, I swear.” I knew he was doing what little he could to comfort me, a kiss would have been nice though.
“Sousuke, when are you going to stop going on these missions?” My heart was pounding, and doing all the talking.
He gave a weak smile, “I don’t know. Everyday the threats grow deadlier, everyday another little girl or little boy dies. We are the first and last defense against the villains, so my job may never be finished.” He glanced down at me, eyes locking with my own. “If I could stay here with you I would, but I’m afraid that just cant be done.”
“Then make it possible!” I fired back at him, “you told me that you felt like you could do anything when I’m around,” the tears trickling down my face again, “then stay here, please Sousuke.”
The surge of emotions must have sent Sagara into a whirlwind of new feelings, it looked as though he was angry but sad. He shed a tear, “I’ll try Kaname.” He went dead silent and a few moments later spoke up again, “for our sake.”
For our sake, what did he mean by that. Had the clueless Sgt. figured out how I felt about him, I’m sure Tessa must have told him. I couldn’t wait to get my hands around Tessa’s scrawny little neck, but Sousuke did say for our sake. Did that mean he felt the same way about me??
