Chapter 2
The silent boy has many fans!! Jealousy rears its ugly head!!
Sitting alone on the roof of Toushima High School, Kanjiro stared at the students below him. “This place is about ten minutes away from central Tokyo.” The students below him seemed to be enjoying the lunch break. Kanjiro, however, had not enjoyed his day. During class time almost every girl attending the school had questioned him. Kanjiro was now the talk of the school, there were also rumors floating around that Kanjiro had been the one who injured the six boys found shortly after school had begun.
************************************************************************
During morning break a group of girls approached Kanjiro while he was reading a book. Most of the guys tended to stray away from Kanjiro after hearing the stories from Tojiro. They all believed it after seeing the injuries inflicted on Tojiro the night before. One of the girls who approached Kanjiro had short purple hair, blue eyes, and a nicely tanned body. Her uniform clung to her figure, and she tried to tempt Kanjiro knowing all to well about her gorgeous figure.
The girl’s name was Nayoko Aihara. She strolled from the group of giggling girls over to the fountain Kanjiro was sitting at. “Hello Kanjiro-kun!” Nayoko’s perky voice caused Kanjiro to observe the girl, but he remained silent. “You know, I like silent boys. They are always in touch with their feelings more than the other boys are.” She was practically purring as she sat next to Kanjiro. Her flirtatious attitude did not go unnoticed. Many guys that liked Nayoko growled at Kanjiro for being so lucky.
He simply replied, “maybe.”
Nayoko smiled, “your cute!” She kissed Kanjiro on the cheek, still he remained silent. “And you don’t break so easily. It’s rare to find a guy like you.” Kanjiro showed no signs of interest in the flirtatious girl, but then...
“you’re very beautiful.”
The sudden comment cause Nayoko to blush, her face grew bright red. “Thank you Kanjiro-kun!”
Suddenly, Kanjiro slammed his book closed, then faced Nayoko. His silver eyes gazing straight into her light blue eyes. “This is a lie. You do not really care for me, it is merely a front. Your desire to have me is fueled by the fact that if I became your boyfriend then you would become popular in the eyes of all the female students.” Nayoko jumped, how could Kanjiro know what she was thinking. “I am a prize sought out by the female students because I am so far away from you, because I am something different.”
Nayoko grinned, “you are handsome, and smart to boot.”
“Thank you for your comments Nayoko-san.” Kanjiro stood up and begun to head for his next class. “Nayoko, in the future, please be you. Disregard the shell you hide in and be the true Nayoko Aihara. I believe that your true self would garner the admiration of the student body, just give yourself a chance.” It wasn’t often that someone could see past Nayoko’s flirtatious shell, but Kanjiro’s belief in the real Nayoko caused her to blush.
Kanjiro’s words did not only cause Nayoko to admire him, she truly began to fall for him. Like her, many other girls began to see Kanjiro in a new light, he became something more than just a man now. Nayoko sighed as she watched Kanjiro walk away, “Kan...ji...ro...kun...”
Not to far away, a certain pink haired girl held a crushed bottle of water in her hands. Risa had seen the whole thing, even though she felt relieved at the fact that Kanjiro held no interest in Nayoko, the fact that the girls developed deeper crushes worried her. “Damn it Kanjiro, what happened to the caring boy from seven years ago?”
************************************************************************
Nothing could have prepared Kanjiro for the experiences that he was now facing. When Anzai had told him about the murder in Tokyo, Kanjiro then prepared for the hardest fights in his life. Instead, he now faced flirtatious girls, vengeful gang members, and no clues towards the spirit breakers.
Opening his book, Kanjiro began to read while sitting on the roof’s edge. A tranquil silence fell over the peaceful setting. A gentle wind current carried flowers and leaves northwards as Kanjiro concentrated on the information in the book. “The arcane circle of the lunar winds, also referred to as ‘the mark of heaven,’ can be found on both the wrist and the back. The carrier of this power will often be female, the bringers of life. Very rarely has a male been gifted with the powers of the lunar winds. Also, the only way to be certain that the powers witnessed are true, the carrier must have experienced some great insight into the souls of mortals with out a guide.”
Kanjiro continued to flip through the pages of the worn down book. “It should also be known that these powers can reach its full potential while in the presence of the one gifted with the crescent mana-fold, known as ‘the touch of nature.’ The other, being the one with the powers of the dark mist, or known better known as ‘the blood of the dark lord,’ often referred to as ‘hell’s blessing,’ by Catholic priest.” As Kanjiro continued to read his book, the roof’s entry door creaked open. Even though he noticed the slight change in the atmosphere, he continued to concentrate on the book.
“Another power that should be sought after is the power of the Gaia Waters, better known as ‘the mother creator.’ Never has a male been able to harness this power, it is thought that many of the ancient goddesses could harness this power.” With a quick glance, Kanjiro noticed a female standing at the door. He disregarded the female students presence thinking that she was merely there to enjoy the nice weather. Kanjiro returned to reading his book, taking in all the information that he could.
“It is not recommended that your fight any of the above mentioned spirit breakers. They are all extremely dangerous with their powers alone, but if receiving physical and/or mental training, these people could become invincible.” Closing his book, Kanjiro frowned.
Rising to his feet, Kanjiro placed the book in one of the pockets on his coat. “So, if I am the crescent mana-fold, who are the other three?” Remembering back to the events that took place before school, he thought back to the girl. She had a weird mark on her wrist. Taking his book out of his coat, he flipped through the pages until he reached the part about the lunar wind spirit breaker. “What!?” It was rare that Kanjiro was surprised, but this event had even Kanjiro second-guessing. The marking presented in the book was identical to the markings on the girl’s right wrist.
Kanjiro sighed, he realized that now he needed to seek out the girl from that morning. Just as he turned he caught a full look at the girl that had made her way onto the roof earlier. Her light brown hair flowing in the wind, her hazel eyes gazing at Kanjiro. Taking a step forward she swallowed a growing lump in her throat. “Um... Kanjiro-kun...”
She stopped short of where Kanjiro was standing. “Hmm!?” Kanjiro couldn’t believe his luck, the girl he needed to seek out had come to him.
“Well, um... I just wanted to,” gulping, the girl spoke again. “I just wanted to introduce myself, and to thank you.” Hoping over the railing, the girl made her way over to Kanjiro, who was now sitting back down with his legs hung over the side of the building. She smiled, “my name is Fukuda Kazumi.” Her face grew bright red when she noticed that Kanjiro was staring at her the whole time.
Kazumi giggled when Kanjiro didn’t respond. “I notice you don’t talk much.”
Facing the mountains, Kanjiro gazed off into the distance. “I’ve never had a reason to talk.” He looked back over at Kazumi who was hugging her knees close to her chest. A genuine smile spread across her lips.
As they sat on the roof’s edge, Kazumi scooted closer to Kanjiro, she was blushing. Then, leaning her head on Kanjiro’s shoulder, she began to speak. “I guess I know what you mean Kanjiro-kun.” Looking up at Kanjiro, she noticed that he was staring at her the whole time. “Um...”
Kanjiro noticed a large tree near the edge of the school building’s perimeter. The tree had beautiful flowers, the last flowers before the winter season. Quickly he leapt from the roof top, snatched a few flowers from the tree, then leapt back up to the roof top. “Here,” Kanjiro handed Kazumi a few of the flowers, which caused Kazumi to blush.
“You know, after seeing you do that twice you still amaze me.” She continues to lean on Kanjiro’s shoulder, placing on of the pink flowers in her hair. “Thank you Kanjiro-kun.”
With no hints of emotion in his voice, Kanjiro said something that Kazumi would have never thought anyone could see. “You’re hurt inside. Someone very important to you was killed in front of your eyes, even though that took place two years ago, you still carry the emotional pains.”
Kazumi jumped up in surprise, “how d-did you know that?”
Gripping the hilt of his katana, Kanjiro gazes out into the endless blue skies. “Nature told me. Mother earth records the past, retelling the tales of old. Her tree’s are the scribes who record the present in the eternal book. Her winds are the breaths of the future, giving out hints to what could happen.” As the wind picked up Kanjiro let the last flower he held in his hand loose, watching it dance in the wind current. “As do her flowers guide me to the spirits of all the creatures who live upon her.”
“Kan...ji...ro...”
Making a sharp turn Kanjiro made eye contact with Kazumi. “You have some ability like mine. I believe you to be the maiden of the lunar winds, gifted with the touch of heaven. My proof of this rest on your right arm.”
Kazumi grew wide eyed, “ma-my birthmark!?”
Kanjiro nodded, “you may be one of the gifted spirit breakers.”
Lifting her uniforms sleeve, Kazumi laid her eyes upon her birthmark, “spirit... breakers...”
Just as their conversation began to heat up, it was cut short by the untimely ringing of the school bell. Kanjiro turned towards the roof exit then sighed, “I guess that we should be heading to class.” Turning back to Kazumi, “you’re a very important person Kazumi, but if you do not wish to venture forth into the realm of the spirit breakers, I will not force you too. Return to this place after class is completed if you wish to learn about your gifts.”
Kazumi nodded, “but how?”
Kanjiro grabbed Kazumi’s hand, “I will tell you later lunar wind. For now please wait, the answer will be presented to you in time.” She nodded then began to walk to class along side Kanjiro, but when she noticed that they had been holding the entire time she blushed and ran off towards her next class. As she ran Kanjiro thought to himself, ‘I wonder what is bothering her now?’ Kanjiro shrugged it off and walked to his next class, spiritual history and theory.
