Chapter 3

Whirlwind of Visions!

Walking through a crowded hallway he looked back. He saw nothing other than normal students, none with his abilities. No one could match his superiority, he was indeed stronger. The longer they were alive, the more demeaning his life was. Walking... walking... walking...

Alone... That’s right, indeed alone... No one to help, no one wanted to help... Why always alone? It was a thought that has plagued the thoughts of Kanjiro for the past seven years of his life. He couldn’t stay for very long, then people would become his friends. He couldn’t leave too early, he may lose the new spirit breakers. “There is one problem though...” Kanjiro looked down the hall, his eyes focusing on Risa. Indeed she was his problem, Risa knew him. If the enemy knew of this connection, then she would be targeted for bait.

“I should leave as soon as possible, I do not want people to get hurt on my behalf.” That’s correct, he needed to leave. He was sure he needed to leave, but something about Risa Amori attracted him. Not that she was beautiful, not because she was smart, but because she knew him, because she was his link to the past. How could he leave behind this clue, the girl who had loved him before, in the past.

“No, I cannot grow attached to her.” Again, Kanjiro was right. If he grew attached to Risa, who knows what could happen to her. It’s best to leave her alone.

“But is it really?”

“Of course. I will not benefit her in any way.” Alone, he was alone, but if he was alone...

Then who was talking...

Busy streets, always busy. Why are the streets always so busy?

“To stop us, just as the winds prevent us from flying.” Standing at the edge of a roof, atop a skyscraper in central Tokyo, Anzai stared at Kanjiro’s school. “Damn it Kanjiro, you had to go to school! I’m too old to go to school, stupid bastard!” Kneeling, Anzai began to think. “Maybe if I... No that wouldn't work out at all. What about... Damn it! That’s no good.” Just then, the perfect idea struck Anzai. “I know!” Anzai snapped his fingers while jumping of the edge. He was caught by a gust of wind, smiling, while suspended high above the ground. “I can just use wind spirits to turn me invisible!”

“No, that wouldn’t work! Why don’t you just enroll as a student teacher?”

“Hey! That’s not a bad idea, good thinking Kanjiro!” Anzai proceeded to get back on the roof, then he stopped. “What the?” Slowly, Anzai turned around to see Kanjiro floating a few feet behind him, suspended by wind. “K-Kanjiro!”

Sighing, Kanjiro stared at Anzai. “I told you not to follow me!”

“There. There.” Anzai floated over to Kanjiro, slapping him straight in the back. “I’ll use your idea, less conspicuous. Plus, I can follow you around, make sure your doing your job right!” The defiant look Kanjiro sent Anzai sent shivers down the black haired man’s spine.

“Whatever, let’s go then.”

Alone on the roof of her school, Kazumi patiently awaited the arrival of Kanjiro, who was now almost an hour late. Staring at city she wondered how Kanjiro could do half the things he could do. Kazumi fiddled with her hair as she stared off towards Tokyo Central. Just then a low voice cracked the silence. “I see that you decided to come here after all.”

The sudden intrusion by the unknown voice caused Kazumi to jump. Then, with a weak smile, she turned to the source of the voice, Kanjiro. “I’m glad you finally showed up Kanjiro-kun.”

With the same expression of no emotion, Kanjiro walked over to Kazumi. “I am late, and I apologize. This matter is too important to delay.” Placing his hand upon Kazumi’s shoulder, Kanjiro stared straight into her eyes. “First, tell me why you decided to come here.”

“Well...” Kazumi felt herself wobble of balance for a second. Why did she want this, to find out what she was. “Because,” a smile spread across her lips, her eyes lighting up as the sound of her voice became cheerful, “I’ve had this feeling that I was different for a long time. Not the whole individual thing, more like... Something about me wasn’t able to relate to everyone else, but...” Kazumi began to blush as she continued her explanation, “it was different when I met you, a certain warmth came over me. I felt at peace, like I had found someone like me.”

“I see.” Kanjiro hopped over the rail and sat on the edge of the roof. “I can relate, years ago I was alone. Even when I was with people, I was still alone. Maybe it’s because I don’t exactly know who I am, maybe that’s why I’m alone. Then I met you, lunar wind.” He gazed out into the sky, streaked with many colors. “So you decided to come here after all, just because you felt happy around me.”

Kazumi blushed, “of course Kanjiro-kun! I don’t want to be left in the dark about myself. I need to know about myself or I’ll never be happy.” She clamped her hands together, holding them both to her chest. Tears began to flow from her eyes as she pleaded Kanjiro to tell her about her destiny. “Please... Kanjiro-kun, I need to know!”

He sighed, “Kazumi, please understand that if I do tell you,” Kanjiro sent Kazumi a wicked glare. “Then the things that are after me will come after you as well. Things much worst than gangs, lecherous old men, and rapist.” Standing up, he stared directly into her soft eyes. “I shall tell you about the spirit breakers if you are not afraid of destiny!”

“What!?” She couldn’t believe what she was hearing, Kazumi thought. How in the world could there be anything about destiny that should frighten her?”

Kanjiro noticed the change in Kazumi’s mood, just how deep in though she was. “Understand that underneath this surface lies a world of truth. The path to that truth is dangerous, but we spirit breakers are traveling it to stop something catastrophic from occurring. We need you to join us, but if you are not willing I shall not force you.”

The wind began to pick up, a slight drizzle falling. In the middle of the roof Kazumi was deep in thought, wondering what she should do. “If I join the spirit breakers, we will be together right?”

“If the situation requires it then we shall be together.” Kanjiro stood in wonderment, what did that have to do with any of this.

Kazumi smiled, “after much thought, I have decided that I will join the spirit breakers.” She held her hand up in the air, giving a thumbs up signal. “So tell me about my destiny!”

“That’s good, I can sense you’ll be a strong ally in this struggle.” Kazumi looked from side to side, trying to locate the source of the voice. She found it when Anzai slid out of the shadows. A wide grin glued to his face, his eyes burning with desire. “Hi!”

“AAAAAHHH!” Kazumi yelped, the sudden appearance of Anzai sent her flying through the air. Landing softly in Kanjiro’s arms, Kazumi blushed and giggled. Kazumi’s attention quickly switched from Kanjiro to Anzai, “who the hell are you anyways?”

Anzai assumed that the girl was talking to him. Sliding his hand through his spiky hair, and sending a flashy plastic grin at Kazumi, he responded to her questions. “Me, well I’m just one of Kanjiro’s buddies!” Kanjiro stared at Anzai, sighed, and shook his head while setting Kazumi down.

Giggling, Kazumi walked over to the dumbfounded Anzai. “From the look on Kanji-kun’s face, he doesn’t think of you as a friend.” Looking back at Kanjiro, Kazumi and Anzai stared directly at Kanjiro’s face. Straight into his eyes.

Raising an eyebrow, Kanjiro questioned Kazumi’s nickname she had given him. “Kanji-kun?”

The perky young girl pouted when she noticed the disappointment in Kanjiro’s expression. Sending some puppy dog eyes in his direction, Kazumi fumbled with her words. “Is there... something wrong... with me... calling you... Kanji-kun?”

Kanjiro smiled, “no, not at all. Just that a woman use to call me that, it brings up some bad memories. Like all of my memories though, it’s very vague and blurry.” Gliding over to the edge of the roof, Kanjiro sighed. “Also, in my memories I can see a young girl calling my Kanji-kun. It is a fragmented vision so I can’t even tell who the girl is but...” His sentence drifted off as his eyes met the sorrowful eyes of Kazumi. “Some how I know she was once special to me, at least the real me.”

“Kanjiro,” Kazumi whimpered, “I’m sorry.”

“Sorry... Sorry for what?”

“I didn’t mean to...”

At that moment, with out even noticing, Kanjiro slid over to Kazumi and placed his finger on her lips. Smiling down at Kazumi, Kanjiro decided to comfort her. “It’s alright, things like this happen often. You had no control over my situation. There is nothing to be sorry about.” Kazumi brightened as she took in Kanjiro’s words. The fact that he could relate to her own troubles made him all the more interesting to her. Then, out of no where, Kazumi began to laugh. “What is it?”

The young girl wiped some of the tears forming at the tips of her eyes and smiled. “Nothing... It’s just that from the moment I met you, up until a little while ago I have never seen you smile.”

Over in a darkened corner Anzai was grinning at the sight of Kanjiro smiling. “You know Kazumi, you’re lucky to see Kanjiro smile. That’s something that doesn’t happen very often.”

Just as Anzai was about to continue, Kanjiro but in and added in a bit of information in order to defend himself. “Because I have never truly had a reason to smile. Unlike the lives of normal teens my life has been plagued by haunting figures, frightful visions, and an endless quest. I have been bounded to fighting until the day of my death.” Turning towards Kazumi, who was at a lost for words, Kanjiro said, “alright. Before we get any further into the past, we should begin Kazumi’s training.”

Grasping his hand, Kazumi gazed straight into Kanjiro’s eyes, trying to find some comfort in those empty voids. “Yeah.” One word said it all, this was no joke. They needed to begin her training as soon as possible, but something was tugging at Kazumi’s thoughts. “Hey Kanjiro, why did you decide to go on this journey? I’m kinda curious, why would you decide to face such danger?”

Standing a few feet from Kanjiro and Kazumi, with a smirk present on his smug face, Anzai stepped out into the light again. “I wouldn’t mind knowing why you’re doing this to. Since you don’t tell me anything, this would be a good time to start.” Walking over to Kanjiro, he smiled.

Black eyes met the glistening silver eyes of Kanjiro, all that Anzai could see was emptiness. Frowning, Kanjiro softly spoke. “Maybe later... Bad dreams over take me whenever I try to remember the past.” Turning to the quiet female next to him, Kanjiro remained placid. “My reasons for being involved are unimportant.” Sighing, Kanjiro stepped on to the brink of the still school. “That’s good enough for now. Aznai, you inform Kazumi of the rest, I have someone I need to visit now.” In one fluid motion, Kanjiro hopped off the roof, leaving Kazumi and Anzai behind.

The silent boy with the silver bangs slowly faded away into the shadows with Anzai and Kazumi staring at the spot where he disappeared. “Wonder what his deal is?” Anzai’s firm voice broke the tranquil silence that had befallen the quiet rooftop. Turning to Kazumi, who had been staring at the spot Kanjiro had once stood, Anzai began to speak once again. “Oh well, whatever it is we should get started.”

A light drizzle began to fall as darkened clouds began to invade the peaceful skies, turning it ashy. “How do I know this? How do I know those things, I never knew these things before.” Hazel eyes glistened with tears, “His pain, how can I feel his pain?” Kazumi collapsed to her knees, her hands covering her face, wiping away the stream of tears that slid down her cheeks.

A few feet from Kazumi, Anzai stood grinning. “Your gift, I guess you must really like Kanjiro.” Kazumi turned to Anzai who was now walking over to where she was sitting.

“My... gift...” Kazumi say dumbfounded. Kanjiro had mentioned her powers earlier but didn’t have the time to go into any details. She had also overheard him reading his book.

“Dang, I wish it was me that you shared your first soul with. My mother once told me that the first soul the lunar wind bonds with would be of the person she would fall in love with.” Towering above Kazumi, Anzai stood with a lighthearted smile. “Your spirit is that of the lunar winds. The lunar winds have similar powers to that of the crescent mana-fold, like seeing into the past, or knowing the future, but that’s where the similarities end.” With a gentle touch, Anzai lifted the sleeve of Kazumi’s uniform to reveal the arcane circle of the lunar wind. It was glowing. Slowly, Anzai’s hand covered the illuminated circle, and with a faint smile Anzai spoke. “It’s warm, just like mothers.” Gazing into Kazumi’s hazel eyes he let go of her wrist. “You’re a spirit breaker alright.”

“Thanks Anzai.” Turning back to the edge of the silent rooftop, Kazumi smiled. “I guess that should come in handy right.” Both began to laugh. Kazumi smiled, then realized something and began to freak out. “Oh my god, I forgot!!”

Jumping in surprise, Anzai questioned Kazumi thinking that Kanjiro had told her something important that she forgot to mention. “What!? What is it?”

Panting, Kazumi gave Anzai a weak smile, “I forgot to call Miyuki. She wanted me to talk to Kanjiro for her about setting up a possible date.”

Aznai chuckled, “I don’t think anything in the world could get Kanjiro to go out with any woman.”

“Oh well,” sighed Kazumi, “Miyuki saw me talking to Kanjiro during lunch break. She was hoping that I could convince him to go out with her.” Just then, a wicked thought crossed Kazumi. “Is Kanjiro gay or something?”

Suddenly an outburst of laughter shook the rooftop’s foundations. “No.” Responded Anzai.

“Sure...” Kazumi said, sarcastically.

A serious expression took control of Anzai’s face, “I’m serious.” Anzai sighed, “Listen, I don’t know much but...” Staring at Kazumi, Anzai took a deep breath. “From what Kanjiro has told me about his past...” Sighing, “From he has told me, his life hasn’t been very pretty. All he has told me is that his parents died of mysterious causes, then his only living relative was murdered. Kanjiro doesn’t really get attached to any one for fear of losing them, just like his family.”

“Kanjiro...” The pair looked off in the direction Kanjiro had made his exit.

************************************************************************

The sun was setting as the sky blackened with a surge of darkened clouds. Sitting alone in a park, Kanjiro stared at a tree that was beginning to lose its flowers. “My guides are all dying,” turns to the west and stares at the setting sun, “but like all things, they shall return... Next spring. For now I must find a new link to the spirits.” Suddenly, Kanjiro is over taken by an immense pain. “What is this!? Augh!” Kanjiro soon found himself surrounded by a shadowy mist. A whirlwind of fragmented visions engulfed the defenseless teen.

The visions itself are random and vague. Some are visions of the future, and the others are of the past. Some have Kanjiro in them, others do not. Soon, the fury of the wind died down as Kanjiro began to watch a very familiar memory.

A loud voice boomed through out a dark chamber. The walls clad with dim torches, pillars supporting the stone roof above. “Crescent Mana-fold, I shall grant you another life. You shall be re-born into a new body, after you’ve matured you shall join Oniji and then...” Just before the memory could finish the ashy fog rolled in. Another whirlwind picked up, and again stopped, but this time at a new memory.

In a dark room a little boy with jet-black hair , and slight silver bangs is huddled over holding a small cat. The boy cries out, “papa! Mama! Where are you?” Running through out the dark house the boy frantically searched for his parents. Finally, after what seemed to be an eternity, the boy stumbled upon his parents, laying motionless on the floor. Their bodies are drenched in their own blood as a man with silver hair walks out the open door way.

“Papa... Mama...” The boy faints at the shock of seeing his parents dead. The melancholy memory draws to an end as Kanjiro regains control of his mind.

Above him in the night sky, the clouds break apart revealing the pulsating stars. “What do I do now?” Kanjiro questions the stars.

Just then a young woman approached Kanjiro, her soft voice speaking firmly. “You step forward! You find who you are then you are coming back to me! You got that, Kanjiro-chan!” The night air stood still as Kanjiro laid eyes upon a pink hair teen who now stood before him.

“Risa...” The girl strolled up next to Kanjiro and sat next to him on the edge of the fountain.

The fog began to roll in again, followed by a bright flash.

A calm, bright town. A young boy with jet-black hair, and silver bangs, runs down the empty streets. Close behind him is a young pink haired girl, who seems to be angry. “Kanjiro-kuuuuunnnn!!” yelled the energetic pink haired girl.

The boy ahead of her shout back laughing, “come on Risa-chan! I thought your mother is training you, you shouldn’t be this slow.” He sped up as his laughter echoed off behind him.

Risa growled, “I’ll show you who’s slow!” With a sudden burst of energy, Risa sped up. She quickly gained lots of ground as she finally caught up to Kanjiro. With one final burst of energy, Risa pounced Kanjiro, tackling him to the fuzzy, warm grass. When they open their eyes the two children notice that their lips are locked together. Risa had Kanjiro pinned in a kiss, and since she was bigger than him there would be no escaping this. What surprised Risa was the fact that Kanjiro hadn’t begun to struggle, hasn’t tried to free himself. He didn’t even budge.

Rising above Kanjiro, Risa’s cheeks grew crimson. “I’m sorry Kanjiro-kun...” She tried to avert her gaze so that Kanjiro couldn’t look her in the eyes. She was too embarrassed to talk to him eye to eye, face to face.

With a tight grin Kanjiro grabbed Risa’s hands, his gesture forced Risa to stare at him blankly. “I guess you can’t call me Kanjiro-kun anymore.” Risa shakes her head, thinking that their friendship was now over. “You’ll need to start calling me Kanji-chan!”

The vision ends as Risa tries to reawaken Kanjiro from his trance. He suddenly shot awake, his sharp, silver eyes meeting her soft, golden eyes. “Risa-chan... I... I can remember you.” Sitting up, Kanjiro stares at the speechless Risa. “I have regained a full memory. The day we ran through our hometown and ended up near the lake. The day I told you to start calling me Kanji-chan...”

Tears begin to trickle down Risa’s face. Her golden eyes light up as she leaps into Kanjiro’s arms. “Of all the memories we shared together, that just had to be the one you remembered.”

Kanjiro seemed surprised, “is that a bad thing?”

Looking up at Kanjiro, Risa began to chuckle noticing his discomfort. “No, it’s just... Well that’s my favorite memory.” She laughed herself to sleep. Kanjiro hadn’t noticed that it was very late already. He slid his arms around the fragile Risa, gently lifting her up.

“Time to go home Risa.” Kanjiro walked off out of the park in the direction of Risa’s home, carrying the peacefully slumbering Risa.
