Question re M9 armarment

In the production sketches of the M9 and the M9E its shown armed with what looks like a large box. Is this just an artists shorthand or is it some kind of carrying case for the M9's standard 40mm assault rifle?

IIRC, they store guns in that thing. I recall Kurz pulling a rifle out of one of those in the first ep of TSR.

during episode 20 when they deploy thought the lower airtight chambers of Dana, they land and they shed those boxes off their guns. they aren't attached at the hip like that image but the box is similar. i would assume that they are airtight gun box and is part of the amphibious gear for the m9.

One would imagine that it might be a problem if your weapon was full of sea water when you hit the beach.
