SALT IN WATERMELON?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Post by benlisquare »

Another thing confusing in FMP:

In FMP: Fumoffu, in the episode Summer Illusion of Steel, when they are eating the watermelon, one of them says "Misuki, pass the salt."

WTF?!?!?!??! Do japanese people eat watermelon with salt or something?!?!?!?

THIS DOESN'T MAKE SENSE!!! SWEET THINGS SHOULDN'T HAVE SALT IN THEM!!! AND THE SUBTITLES WERE FROM THE OFFICIAL DVD SET!!! SALT?!?!?!?!?

Yes... Actually not Japanese, It's more of the Eastern culture. I eat my watermellon with a little bit of Salt and it's good. You should try it

Salt on watermelon is kind of a common thing in Japan. Different cultures like different things . . . oh, and way off topic too, by the way :?

Same thing with tomatoes- some people put salt on it for taste.

I always put salt on tomatoes when I cook 'em, it's the taste thing.

I think the salt is to add some flavor/zest to the watermelon. And also to replenish the body's lost salt from sweat.

Post's have slid into OT hell. - K

Putting salt on watermelons is not unusually as you may think. We do that in Hungary as well. (We also eat bread with it sometimes.)

"Can I help you?, "you know this section is.." she broke off her sentence as the man walked towards her and nodded, "I think you can Captain".
Tessa looked down, "I haven't been called Captain in 4 years," Wha..what do you want?"
He gave her a devious grin, "I'm here to make sure you keep your promise."

I don't think putting salt on watermelon is necessarily a cultural thing. I actually recall seeing a show on Food Network about salt and it said that salt actually serves to bring out the flavor in a lot of food (used modestly, of course :) ).

I've eaten watermelon with salt before... it's not good when you're thirsty or maybe I was using too much. But yea it adds a different flavor but overall, I like it more without the salt.

Wise man say... try it before you knock it :-D

Watermelon ain't my idea of a great fruit, but alittle salt on it never hurt

Well, I never understood why our folks ate guava with that brown powder stuff, but I was never a guava person anyway.

Never did see anyone eat watermelon with salt, though drinking Pepsi with salt is another thing, according to my parents. In addition to the "bringing out the flavour" reason (which they use for almost any condiment), they say it makes it fizzier, which is easier for me to understand.

CPOK, you wouldn't have been a SEAL, would you? *curious*

Anyhow, for me, whenever I'm cooking and I have tomatoes, I HAVE to pult salt with them. *shrugs* It could just be some sorta psychological thing though.
