Animethon 2004 AfterAction Report

Post by HELLFIRE »

complied by HELLFIRE
dates concerned Jul 17-18th
re Animethon

the SECOND con I managed to hit this year. Started off with a three hour
drive north to Edmonton -- get a map if you don't know where that is -- late
at night fueld by two bottles of chilled Bawls (10ml caffiene per serving).
Boy was _I_ in a loopy mood when I got up there. I won't bore you with
details of how I managed to entertain myself between the hours of 0300
(when I got into town) and 0900 (when I showed up at the front doors)

Sat
Registration is it's usual fun process at any 'con, lineups, mixups, short
tempers... but a GREAT chance to catch the COSPLAYERS!! (more later).
Going early, I was spared most of the longer lineups, and getting the
Premium Pass had it's benefits...

First off: FUMOFFU!!!, 1st 4 eps -- can't miss with this, room wasn't
QUITE dying with laughter, but everyone was thoroughly enjoying it :-D

Then a trip to the dealer's room -- hey, who DOESN'T go to a 'con for the
merchandise? ANYTHING and EVERYTHING for an anime lover at heart.
Mine was set on more FMP!, but alas no go. I DID find a copy of the Anime
Mission book in Japanese, but elected not to get it at this time (my bad).

Oh, found some Pertty Guardian Sailor Moon merchandise... YES that
series playing in Japan right now... NO I DID NOT pick it up...
I DID get photos of it...

Two dubbed anime in a row, Chobits and hack//sign... AAAARGH!!
I wanted to find the projector tech and rip his/her head off!!

By now, my lack of sleep was catching up with me -- last two days prior
to making it here I had a total of maybe 14 hours of sleep, if that.
Tried to watch Dirty Pair: Project Eden before the Cosplay event
but ended up sleeping thru most of it. Maybe the fact that most of this
'movie' was no talk and mostly (soothing) music contributed... who knows

COSPLAY YAAYYY!!! Main reason why you go to 'cons, right? RIGHT?!
Saw alot of: Naruto (Naruto, Sakura, Saske, Gara & Gara's sister?),
Chobits (Chii, Frey, Sumomo), Inu Yasha (12+ Inu Yashas at least),
CCS, Tokyo Mew Mew, DB (many), Final Fantasy, FMA...

Memorable mentions: Mario, Luigi & Princess Toadstool, Haruko (FLCL),
Ayanami Rei, formal-dress Hitomi (Escaflowne), Belldandy (YAY!!!),
Jigglypuff, Kirby & Domo-kun...

No FMP!, unfortunately, AGAIN. Well, there WAS Mao, but...

...I have pics for most of them, so if there are any requests, IF you ask nicely, and I can find them... ;)

8 hours of uniterrrupted sleep!!! AFTER getting soaked to the skin by
a summer rainstorm...

Sun
not much to mention, most of the convention was winding down, and I
was growing lethargic... hey I AM human, you know :-D I hit a place
called 'The Room of Mystery' most of the time... euh, the less said the
better...

Goodies Purchased
Not much of mention... I DID get a copy of the ROD TV box (HIGH on my
wishlist)... NICE!! LastExile V2... V3 and V4 were nowhere to be found...
Battle Royale 2, some VCDs, Sailor Moon figurine collection :perv:

Would've / Could've / Should've gotten more, but 1) short cash, 2) guess
how fast the euphoria of buying stuff wears off for me...

While I tally up the damage to my wallet after this trip, I'll be transferring
over the shots I took; if you have SPECIFIC REQUESTS of something, I'm
more than willing to share... something more than 'post your entire collection'

Needless to say, my webhost is on my s**t list after they turned off my
FTP access  and limited me to 3 files at a time at <= 500K filesize

On a good day, a Tomahawk can fly into the door of a two-car garage at the distance of several hundred miles. And that can ruin your whole day.

@RF
Yeah, nostalgic IF you're inside and dry... NOT when you're running from
dryspot to dryspot trying NOT to get soaked thru :-D

Approx Breakdown of sleep hours: Wed night ~6 hours (maybe), Thur
night 5 hours, Fri night 5 hours)... factor in 3 full 8hour work shifts
and 3 hours driving time behind the wheel. Suffice to say it caught up to
me by Saturday afternoon

I thought that it only snowed that far north, HF. :-D

Alberta has the same number anime cons that Netherland have.

I would surmise from your account and the damage to your wallet that you will not be attending Otakon.

Too bad about the server, I wanted to see those pics of .............

Oh well. two weeks till Otakon. I wonder who'll go.

other then our resident Aussie. :-D

I'll do a catalog of the (cosplay) shots I got, and you guys can pick what you
want emailed / uploaded, how's that?

@Bel
Actually that trip's first dependent on getting confirmation I actually
HAVE the time off to go and having enough time beforehand to book the
trip, then it's the cashflow... we'll see

"Can I help you?, "you know this section is.." she broke off her sentence as the man walked towards her and nodded, "I think you can Captain".
Tessa looked down, "I haven't been called Captain in 4 years," Wha..what do you want?"
He gave her a devious grin, "I'm here to make sure you keep your promise."
