It might be, 'cept fan appreciation doesn't fill the tummy or pay the rent.

Hordes of people may love what you do, but that doesn't give you what you need to live.
(note too, as a fan you love a series and perhaps the top names that were involved in making it. You don't know who any of the people who drew or painted the cels are, except perhaps the key animator of the project if you're into knowing such things.)

Back to the article- traditional cel animation is going away, anyway.
Not that it doesn't suck in a way, for the workers and for fans in a sense, but I doubt it'll be the end of anime as we know it. There are many series every year that no longer use painted cels and the tweener pencil work already often gets outsourced......

But I do think that it sucks that it has always been an under-appreciated and under-rewarded job to be a cel animator, even master animators. Clearly the better paying career is in being at the top of the chain producing gobs of plastic collectible crap :roll:

So true, so true.

Actually why I found the article interesting was because it was brought up
to rebutt against the 'myth' buying anime DVDs supports the animators.
Mind you, I find that no excuse to go out and not pay for my anime...

@Arbalest
I agree with ya completely, but to bastardize a REALLY good quote: [adoration]
will neither fill my belly nor [put gas in my car] :-D

I think those cel animator should consider a other business strategy.

maybe Shinkai Makoto, had a better deal.
