I got the manga of GPM (only vol1), but I have all the episodes of GPM. I don't have the games, so I don;t know which is more accurate.
While both are about the interactions of the teenage Tank Battalion 621 in 1999 during the war with the Genju (Phantom Beast), there are major changes in how the charcters meet and thier interactions.
First of in the Manga, it is Hayami (not Shibamura) that join the unit after after the other. Also, they are a training unit, not a combat unit yet. Shibamura is the one who greets Hayami, and Hayami falls for her when he fiorst sees her. Shibamura gets along with him far better, then the other people in the unit as Again, he has no clue about the Shibamura's and thier control of the gov't. Aslo, the draft of the teenagers was just implemented where in the anime it was in force for about 20 years (I think). That day, Setaguchi and Takigawa decdied to show Hayami thier favorite night time activity. Yep, peeping on the girls shower. Well it is a rundown barracks and Hayami falls thru the wall and falls ontop of Shibamura. Setaguchi and takigawa leave immediately as Hayami gets the 'treatment' by shibamura.
Next Day, the training unit get two new transfer, the glasses LT and Wakimiya. They have been tasked to make the unit combat ready in one month instead of the normal six months. both Wakimiya and the Lt are the only Veteran in the unit. Well, the unit does get its certification for combat and Setaguchi & Takigawa decide to celebrate by, you guessed it peeping on the girls. Hayami is brought along, and is agian confronted by Shibamura (as Setaguchi and Takigawa 'sacrifice' Hayami to save thier skins). This time she is wearing a one piece swimsuit. Hayami then states that the suit looks good one her. this causes her again to adminster treatment to Hayami.
Nonomi ( the little girl) rooms with shibamura and sees her as her big sister. As Hayami tries to sort out his aches and pains, Nonomi comes and talks to him. It would seems that to Nonomi the shibamura actually likes Hayami as she talks about him all the time in the drom.
This isn't all of it for Vol 1, but it gives you an idea of hwo different the two are.
