What the... I was like wtf when I read the title name and I thought how did I cause a car accident.
Some people can't mutitask as easy as others. So people can focus 100% at 2 things while others can focus 50% at 2 things. Still, he shouldn't be doing so. He had it coming for typing his message and not stopping first.

Cited for following too closely? No no no, what they SHOULD do is Hang, Draw and Quarter him.
..And you gotta love the Palm Treo ad in the middle of the article.
"Use this instead of the Blackberry! Less crashes, more text!"

imo nope.
While we multi-task our brain uses two distinct stages, goal shifting ("I want to do this now instead of that") and rule activation ("I'm turning off the rules for that and turning on the rules for this"). Both stages help people unconsciously switch between tasks.
Rule activation takes time, several tenths of a second -- which can add up when people switch back and forth between tasks.
At 140Km/H 0.5 seconds can be the difference between crash and no crash.

.5 secs?
You're being generous. It takes longer than .5 secs to decide to swerve or break, and then perform the decided task.
If your eyes are not glued to the road ahead, you are going to plow into a surprise for sure.
