Why use an energy model to describe the effect? Fluid mechanics is more than sufficient to predict this behavior. This is what happens when a viscous liquid with high surface tension and low self adhesion interacts with itself.

Because with a simple fluid model you can't calculate the incoming power and the dissipation rate in the dimple structure.
