FREDERICK COUNTY, MD - Bananas are good on cereal or on a sundae, but a masked man in Frederick County tried to use one as a weapon.

The man tried to rob the 7-11 in Monrovia just after midnight. He demanded cash, but when the clerk refused, the man started throwing bananas at him.

Troopers say he then went behind the counter and smashed a banana on the clerk's head.

The masked man didn't take anything. He's still on the loose. No word on if police are keeping the bananas as evidence.

The Maryland State Police issued the following release:

TROOPERS SEARCHING FOR CONVENIENCE STORE ROBBER

WHO ASSAULTED CLERK WITH BANANAS

(Frederick, MD) – Maryland State Police at the Frederick Barracks are searching for a man who threw bananas at a convenience store clerk he was attempting to rob early today, just before he fled from the clerk who had armed himself with a knife.

The suspect is described as a white male, about six feet tall and weighing 200 pounds. He was wearing blue jeans, a white shirt, and had a black cloth covering his face.

The victim is identified as a 54-year old man who was not injured in the incident. The man works at the 7-11 store in the 11000-block of Fingerboard Road, Monrovia, Md. Police are not releasing his name at this time.

Just after 12:30 a.m. today, troopers at the Frederick Barracks were dispatched to the 7-11 convenience store for the report of an attempted robbery. Upon contacting the victim, troopers learned that minutes before, the suspect entered the store with the black cloth around his face and told the victim to “give me your money.” The clerk did not see a gun or other weapon displayed.

The suspect walked behind the counter, continuing to order the victim to surrender his money. The victim pulled out a kitchen knife he had been using to slice food with. The suspect ran to the other side of the counter and picked up a handful of loose bananas, which he threw at the victim. Two of the bananas hit the victim in the head, but he was not injured.

The clerk continued to display the knife while ordering the suspect from the store. After fumbling around the counter and unsuccessfully attempting to open the register, the suspect fled the store empty handed, without even a banana. He was last seen walking east.

The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office assisted troopers with a K-9 track. The track ended a short distance away in the adjoining parking lot of the Green Valley Center.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Maryland State Police at the Frederick Barracks, at 301-600-4150.

The investigation is continuing.

He should plead not guilty on grounds of insanity.
