Tomahawk cruise missile (B/UGM-109)
---
IOC: 1982

Major Variants: TLAM-A/N, BGM-109B/TASM, TLAM-C/D, Gryphon GLCM

Manufacturer: Hughes (primary), McDonnell Douglas (secondary)
*NB: Hughes became sole supplier in 1994

Armed force used in: USN, RN

Warhead: W80 5-150kt in nuclear attack profile, 1000lb HE in anti-ship
and TLAM-C profile, submunition bomblets in TLAM-D profile

Range: 250nm in anti-ship profile, 700nm+ in land attack profile

Seeker System: combinations of inertial, TERCOM, DSMAC, GPS
depending on model, radar seeker in anti-ship

Special notes: An extremely accurate and flexible strike system, as
demonstrated in the 1991 Gulf War and Balkans Conflict.

Has an external diameter of 533mm / 21" to fit into a submarine's
torpedo tube. Can also be launched in a Vertical Launch Sysytem (VLS)
configuration from properly equipped USN surface ships, 688-class
subs and the Tuatha de Daanan.

GPS guidance was added in the Block 3 mod in the late 1990s.

The particular model fired by the Daanan was the TLAM-C model.

"20 degree down bubble"
---
Bubble refers to the inclinometer on a submarine, which indicates
incline or decline from horizontal. In this case, the order was to
maintain a 20 degree down angle. If you think this is easy, try
doing it with 6,000+ tons of ship around you 8)

On a good day, a Tomahawk can fly into the door of a two-car garage at the distance of several hundred miles. And that can ruin your whole day.

Bah... I wanted to do that!

on another note, her other order, "Ahead 2/3rds", does not really mean 2/3rds of maximum speed. It's an order for 10 knots (2rds of standard speed). "Ahead Standard" is 15 knots. The order "Ahead full" is 20 knots, and the order "Ahead Flank" is "Move as fast as this damn thing can go!".

A knot is a unit of measurement for speed, equaling 1 nautical mile per her. A nautical mile is about 1.2 miles.

EDIT: I knew I screwed one of the scales, I wasn't sure which one.

There... much better.

Remember kids, trying to start Armageddon is dangerous. Do not try it at home.

[14:57] Silver Lynxy: Oh right. You're one of those Trillian people, aren't you?
[14:58] Katyusha [Love Through Superior Firepower]: trillian people? =.= What are we, an ethnicity now?

A slight correction. 1 nautical mile = 1.852 km

A nautical mile is the distance on the Earth's surface that equals to 1 minute of latitude (i.e, by going one nautical mile you would have moved in an arc which encompasses 1 minute at the centre of the Earth).

Therefore, the earth's circumference at the equator = 360 x 60 = 21600 nautical miles.

It's important especially for aircraft and ships as there are no landmarks, but since your latitude and longitude may be measured, you may then determine the distance travelled.

1 nautical mile = 1.1508 statute miles
1 nautical mile = 1.852 km

So 1 knot = 1.852 km/h, 10 knots = 18.52 km/h, 15 knots = 27.78km/h and 20 knots = 37.04 km/h. Pretty fast considering it's a moving hunk of metal fighting against water resistance.
Find me on IRC as Deckard in the MirC-X server!

Well, been waiting for someone to start it...
And I AM the keeper of the Tomahawk *hehe*

Addenum:
Besides calling for 'Reverse,' '1/3rd,' '2/3rds,' 'Full,' and 'Flank,' the
CO can also call for a specific number of revolutions of the screw
*naval term for the propeller for you landlubbers :)* to control the
speed of the boat, or the amount of noise put out during the screw's
operation.

@Deckard
Thx for the info on nautical mile. How'd I miss that one....and now my
head hurts from all the math talk Argh!! *LOL*
