Minor Manga difference

Post by PookaKitten »

I just got my copy of the manga earlier today. (Well, I had $10 worth in gift certificates to Waldenbooks. What did you expect me to do? ) I read most of it on the bus, or waiting for the bus. In the manga, Tessa's rank is Colonel, not Captain. For those of you who actually know about military ranks, what does that difference mean?

Also, I hope they animate the fourth chapter, "Bread and Bullets," in Fumoffu. Sousuke doing "security" on the bread while the Student Council takes over selling it because of our dear transfer student's inability to simply ask for something.

I think I mentioned this in the Armory once. Basically, if you were to
go by the US military rank system (of which can be found here)
The Army/Air Force/Marine Corps rank of Colonel (O-6) is equivalent
to the Naval rank of Captain, which explains why most fansub groups
(and ADV, I can't be sure) translated it as that.

...I also remember reading in a Gundam sourcebook a translation / comparison
list of the Japanese military ranks. If anyone has this or something
similar, it'd be appreciated.

So depending on how you look at it, there are several explanations for the discrepancy.

1. Mithril is primarily a land/air military, and uses those ranks, except for their aquatic operations, such as the de Danaan. The problem with that theory is that it seems overly complex, unless Mithril is a much larger operation than we guessed. Maybe it is, since the de Danaan cost what, $5 billion dollars to build? Admittedly, if they make another, it may cost less because they worked the bugs out already.

2. Kalinin's background is land based, so he uses the title of Colonel unconciously, though her title is Captain. Problem is that does not sound like him, as my impression is that he is somewhat a stickler for protocol.

Great, now I'm coming up for ways to explain translation differences that fit within the scope of the series. :) Is that a sign I need more of a life?

From what we've seen, the other ranks, which side of the fence do they fall on? Land/air, or aquatic? Let's see, Kurtz and Sousuke are Sergeants, Melissa is a Major Sergeant, and nobody's quite sure about what Kalinin's actual rank is. :)

I've heard some fan speculation Mithril isn't even a military per se.
The evidence quoted was the scene where Mao pleads with Kalinin to let
her return to Khanka to rescue Sousuke & Kurtz, her tone which was
borderline insubordination. The better term is probably a paramilitary group...
just speculation on my part, though.

Kalinin's background, as given by ADV's webpages is in the Russian
Spetznaz (Special Forces). Now I can't authoritatively speak on
the Russian Officer ranks, but I suppose that he's more ingrained in
the (US) Army/AF/Marine rank system (aka Colonel) than the Navy
system (aka Captain). Basically, same difference :-D Then again,
talk to someone who's served in the military and you'd get an EARFUL
on the differences *hehe*

Kurtz, Sousuke and Mao are definately in the enlisted ranks. As for Kalinin, I thought it was Major :-D

"Can I help you?, "you know this section is.." she broke off her sentence as the man walked towards her and nodded, "I think you can Captain".
Tessa looked down, "I haven't been called Captain in 4 years," Wha..what do you want?"
He gave her a devious grin, "I'm here to make sure you keep your promise."

Nah, it's simply a sign this grad student is still obsessive about the show, and trying to avoid doing her homework. (I discovered it the last time I had a manic episode. Ah, the joys of bipolar. Now if I had more time to write, and I don't mean technical stuff...)

Avoiding homework

Post by PookaKitten »

Speaking of avoiding math homework, I just did the first 2/3 of my homework due on Tuesday, so I'm taking a well deserved FMP vol 3 break. :)

No, no, no! DVD Volume 3. Sorry, I should have been more explicit. It's official, I dislike this volume's FBI warning with Tessa's voice actress. Strongly, strongly, strongly dislike.

hehehee, good thing I keep my research work :D

Back in college I was working with a groupo of people developing a role playing game system and did alot of research into military ranking systems around the world. Here is a 1 to 1 listing of US->USSR (circa 1990) comparison of ground force rankings (albiet simplified):

Code: Select all

US ------------------ USSR
Private ------------- Armeyets
Spec 4 -------------- Yefreytor
Sergeant ------------ Serzhant
Staff Segeant ------- Serzhant
Platoon Sergeant ---- Starshiy Serzhant
Master Sergeant ----- Starshina
Sergeant major ------ Starshina
2nd lieutenant ------ Mladshiy leytenant
1st lieutenant ------ Starshiy leytenant
Captain ------------- Kapitan
Major --------------- Major
Lieutenant Colonel -- Podpolkovnik
Colonel ------------- Polkovnik

I also have comparisons of the British, German, Czech, Bulgarian, Hungarian, Polish, Romainian, and French army/ground forces ranking systems. All with some simplification and done around 1990.

damn, i got all worked up over nothing :)

@KiLlEr:
for those who can't master russian pronounciation, hehe, here's something: http://www.sovietarmy.com/ranks/ranks_fm.html . it does say that only stalin was ever generalissimo, which afaik isn't true, there were five of them, but otherwise this makes for an interesting reading. doesn't compare to US ranks but shows the structure better.

Also, if I was reading volume 3 of the manga, I'd be doing it by looking at the pictures, for the most part. :) Due to time and sanity constraints (aka I have to pass my required POS [plan of study, not what that acronym usually means] courses), I had to drop my my Japanese class.
