Kurz's girlfriend could be in a coma or something. Loyalty aside it can possibly get pretty lonely and the chances of her waking up could be pretty slim.

Kurz wouldn't do that. Few people would be guilt-free enough to do that.
Unless they split up before she went into the coma and he's still paying for
her bills out of kindness or friendship or guilt and other things. I think that
was my theory--that they've split already.

Also I take note that a guy is not necessarily scum when situations like this arise.

Rick Hunter from Robotech or (Ichijo Hikaru from Macross if you prefer) began a relationship with another girl over circumstances that made him realize he'd fallen in love with her even as he couldn't exactly FORMALLY break up with his current girlfriend at the time.

If the relationship wasn't necessarily that serious to begin but he's doing it because he's a decent guy, I wouldn't blame him if he did see other people and basically explain it to her when she woke up.

We don't know if his ex-girlfriend/girlfriend was in loev with him or not.

I won't generalize, but my point from the start was that Kurz wasn't.
