actually I'm not sure this equals as a spoiler or not, but it's something that was never featured in the anime...
What's the deal with Kalinin's cooking? I surfed a few Jpn sites and they mostly feature fanart that well.. disses his cooking. Sousuke seems to dislike his cooking with a passion
probably a question best answered by ppl who actually read the novels...
I don't remember seeing anything in the novels that mentioned his cooking. Though, if Sousuke learned his cooking skills from him, they obviously can't be very good. >_<

It's a matter of belief in the armed forces that soldiers make lousy cooks, and that MREs are lousy food. (British and French MREs are supposed to be very good though: British MREs are edible and decent-tasting, while French MREs are mini-gourmet cuisine).
That said, Russian rations are supposed to be really bad. That's why in MGS3, Russian Rations taste horrible. ^_^
Long way to home,
Mou sugu kaeru yo,
Yoake made ni, Kimi no moto e.
yes MRE's are horrored. (hate to think what the Russkie ones taste like!)
Anime: its not about the big guns, Its about the bouncies!
I was taught to kill, not to make them look pritty for a casket funeral. -me

It's mentioned in, let me think..the 2nd release of a dancing very merry christmas (or whatever it was called) by Boku Tachi, AFAIR, but that's about it, though I haven't read the manga yet.
On the field ration side of things, I can reveal that danish field rations are actually pretty nice. It's been a long time, but I spend a trial week in the airforce back in the 9th grade, and among doing recon and demolitions practice missions we got to feast on the field rations...heheh, I've never thought of this before, but back then I had just turned 16 and must've looked a little like a western sousuke..no scratch that, after finding forward some pictures, I looked a ton like him, if you forget that he's supposed to be asian...
Anyway, not the point, the point: there was everything in those rations, warm breakfast, your everyday lunch, and a 3-meal dinner with good cheese&crackers for snacks, and the desert was splendid...quite luxurious...or maybe I was just really hungry.
Is it just me, or are there way too many talking decapitated heads around these days?

I have only heard good things about the newer US MREs
