I just got notified by Amazon that EODBD will not be released. I tried to check ADV's site just now, and they're all down. :-o

"Can I help you?, "you know this section is.." she broke off her sentence as the man walked towards her and nodded, "I think you can Captain".
Tessa looked down, "I haven't been called Captain in 4 years," Wha..what do you want?"
He gave her a devious grin, "I'm here to make sure you keep your promise."

I think TokyoPop was supposed to release it, but if Amazon says it has been cancelled that does indeed suck. All TokyoPoop accomplished by buying up the rights was to dry up fans' chances of seeing any kind of English translation.

Must be the crisis.
But it's probably the lack of sold books.
While there are lots of fans when it's free not many are actually inclined
to pay for it.

Freetard comments aside, somehow it sucks how the whole global economic thing putting a damper on everything, even my precious anime / manga is not immune :storm: :storm:

What with even Gonzo converting into eroge anime to get some $$$. Good news is that the Japanese AV industry is one of the only still going strong....

Keep looking around. Tokyopop's in trouble, yes, but to my knowledge they haven't canceled anything yet.

A lot of books have been delayed. The Twelve Kingdoms novel that was supposed to be out in March, for example, was delayed until' September. Amazon.com told me it was canceled--but it wasn't.

You have an outfit like TokyoPop that puts things out on an erratic schedule, with very poor advance marketing (have you ever searched their Web site for release news? Horrible!), and then a lot of people have to go to Borders or Barnes & Noble to buy the material --that may or may not actually reach the shelves.

I think more people would buy the product if they knew about it and if it was readily available. The delivery chain for manga and anime seems really problematic.

Another thing I wonder about is that there are so many Japanese folks who speak fluent English, why doesn't someone over there gin up a translation operation for the English-speaking market?

there really are a lot of Japanese fluent in English? They most likely don't have the motivation since we don't have anything to do with them, and if you look at fan translators most are students who are zealous with their hobby or are translating for their own benefit since it also helps with their understanding if it is set on paper.

only problem i had with manga at stores was with Death Note-they just flew off the shelves like no tomorrow! I never paid attention to the techniques of the home companies, interesting info.

Well, I'm not sure "fluent" is the right word... in Japan, and many other countries, learning English is mandatory for students. I believe they begin at a rather young age in Japan--elementary school, maybe? The school I was at in Taiwan had English classes for elementary school kids.

As for someone in Japan doing the translating... there is a lot more to it than basic translating. The whole licensing and production and distribution and marketing represents a LOT of it. Not to mention QA, which a lot of companies have been skimping on lately.

....

And, as someone who's worked on Chinese-->English translation business, I can tell you that even the "best" english-speaking non-natives will make errors--most commonly with pronouns and verb tense.

Ideally, for any translation project, you need a native speaker of the original language to translate into English, so that as much of the original material is retained as possible. THEN, you need an English native-speaker to re-translate the English, to make certain that all of the meaning of the translation is properly conveyed into English.

I know it sounds simple, but every once in a while the translation will fall apart. I can remember spending a good ninety minutes staring at a single sentence, trying to decipher the meaning.

I believe there are 5.

I've had a Japanese for dummies course and the guy who gave it invited a teenage girl an her mother ..

A nice lesson in culture and no not every girl runs around in sailor moon uniforms. <g>

But when the subject of English popped up we got a big wakarimasen and basically that was the end of it.

I suppose my faulty impressions came from the knowledge that English is taught in Japanese schools and from a brief pen pal correspondence with a Japanese girl while I was in junior high who wrote better English than some of my peers. Still she could very well be the exception and not the rule.

For that matter, I had two years of Spanish in an American high school, and can't speak or write that language even a little bit. Ah, one must beware of generalizations...

Just have to mention, remember that HighSchools in Japan are not
like the United States! :-D

Some schools over rank others, and young middle school students have to take tests to enter the higher qualified Highschools, just like we do for universities.

So probably, learning english is a higher privaledge,..

Theres kinda an embarrasement behind it when a japanese person
doesnt know english because it kinda states their Class status and
ranking as far as intellgence goes. Horrible really. :(

Unlike us, learning French or Spanish doesnt give ALOT
of oppurtunities really. But learning English can determine if you can
work for the states and make more $$ and of course,..freedom.

So yeah, only the privaledge get English Class AND learn it well..=/
