sousuke's scar (middle-anime series spoilers)
jae, did any of the novels mention how sousuke's scar came about? i've always wondered about that. it reminds me a lot of kenshin...in the kenshin oavs they showed how kenshin got those slashes on his face (very brutal and gory those oavs...)
i don't remember but when sousuke was kashim (with the long hair) was the scar there yet? i'm not sure if it was...
i thought they would show a flashback of how sousuke got that scar
spoiler warning- this thread contains possible series spoilers- beginning about halfway down this first page. Don't read far if you want to remain *pure*- Jae

He did have it as a kid. I haven't seen any pics of him without it.
I have no idea how he got it, not sure if it says anywhere (I haven't *read* the novels, just gotten entirely lost and fustrated by them heh).
I *do* think that he has is in part because of Kenshin. Alot of the stereotype stuff in fmp is in there for parody reasons.
They have some other traits in common, about as much as kaname and kaoru are similar.

I think it's more of a thug thing than a hero thing
It just so happens there are a few heros that have thug scars <g>
(or thug-type histories)
Sort of to say, 'here's a dangerous guy. A guy who gets into/causes trouble.'
Re-reading your post mishieru, I guess I don't think that how sousuke got his is anything at all like how kenshin got his...I think the creators based sousuke on various things, kenshin included.
But I'd be pretty interested if anyone could uncover anything about that scar....

I have to concur with the "hero thug scar." I think it's just a charateristic mark to seperate him from others.

Hi, I'm Kodachiko Kureru. I joined today the board. ^_^ Yoroshiku onegaishimasu.
Hmmm, indeed, the "x" scar is a very common thing in manga...I also think that Kaoru and Kaname look alike etc, but I'm not sure they really based K&S on K&K... ^^
Anyway, I had an hypothesis (argh, forgive me if my spelling is terrible T_T English isn't my primary langage, only the third soo... -_-;; ) :
In the manga (the main one, not the "ikinari full metal panic"), Sousuke does not has the scar back in Afganistan... I was thinking that maybe he got the scar when fighting Gaurun for the first time, since in the manga they didn't explained really how the fight was, unlike in the anime where he simply snipped on Gaurun from far away (and he had already the scar, but then again, they could have fighted before that)...
I was wondering if the books had anymore details aout it, but I haven't bought them yet... T_T I became a fan not too long time ago, only 1 month ago...
In the Ikinari full metal panic, Sousuke has already the scar when he was a kid, but they don't say if he had it in Afganistan, or if it's afterwards. (cf the flashbacks with Margareth's dad)
I had elaborated a lot of theories about it (of course, the flashbacks could be passed before fighting Gaurun, and be just a mistake of the mangaka too used to draw him with the scar, but it could as well be after the fight), and was planning on some day draw a doujinshi with that, but I fear I'll never have the time T_T;;;
The following is completly from my own imagination, based on the few clues they give us on the manga(s) aboutSousuke's childhood, I'll do my best to not to spoil anyone with the small allusions to the manga & anime :
I think that he might have had to fight Gaurun on his own (well, more being beated by Gaurun than fighting since he was just a kid) when Kalinin was out of the small "city" they were staying at in Afganistan, and that Sousuke ended up managing to shoot Gaurun in the head, more by surprise &/or accident than by really being able to fight really, since Gaurun was adult and much stronger (maybe at this moment the place they were in got attacked etc, so Sousuke managed to get a gun etc).
He might have got traumatized by all that, and have had to go back to training stuff after they left the place, due to the shock of 1) living in guerilla since he was small, 2) losing almost all the people that he knew from the small city when Gaurun attacked the place (I think the manga says that Gaurun attacked it when Kalinin was out, and that he massacred all women & children etc, no? I gotta re-read it...If that's the case, Kashim was most likelt sparred only because a) he was huge lucky, or b) Gaurun planned to make him say where Kalinin was.
After all, if my memory is right, Gaurun was hired by the KGB to go after and kill Kalinin & Sousuke who were hiding in Afganistan, but Sousuke being a kid, I doubt that he was a very important piece in the KGB vs Mythril thing, while Kalinin probably was a much more important one...), 3) being possibly tortured by Gaurun & his allies who wanted to know where Kalinin was.
Huh, all my explanation sounds very confusing. ^^; *lol*
Anyway, in my "future doujinshi idea", Kalinin comes back with allies and attacks Gaurun's place, what creates a surprise effect and mess big enough for Kashim to free himself, get a gun and shoot Gaurun in the head. Maybe the place collapsed after the battle or something, what would explain why they didn't went to check if Gaurun was really dead.
Sousuke would then be sent back to training due to the trauma he got from all this mess, and that would be the part that we see in the flashbaks in "Ikinari Full Metal Panic", .
My poor mind in lack of fanfics & doujinshis then created a lot of theories about Sousuke having taken years to get rid of the trauma and auto-destructive feelings stuff etc. (--> Cf in Ikinari full metal panic, flashback when he gets shot while Margareth's father tries to save the 2 kids. Doesn't it looks like he jumped to take the bullet??!)
That would also explain why in the anime, in that flashback episode where Melissa talks about when she met Sousuke & Kurtz, Sousuke keeps trying to look less good than he is, and to hide his abilities. He's been fighting his entire life, and he doesn't knows how to do anything else, so he's got nowhere else to go, but on same time, he might sometimes feel tired of this all, of fighting non stop (after all, no matter what he is, he's still human..but he's a "specialist", and a "perfect soldier", so he's got no way to escape! Poor Sousuke! ^^; )
That could also explain why after so many years fighting, going through huge important missions etc, and being in Mythril for so long, he's still a sergeant (and even a decoy in the books, like I read somewhere). Usually, when you're in an army, it takes a few years to evolve from a rank to another, but in a war situation, people evolves much faster, and Mythril is non-stop fighting, but Sousuke isn't in that high of a position.
Okay, Kurtz is same, but we don't know anything about his past, he might not have been there since he was a kid (that would explain why he's still huh, human...*lol*)
I had also other ideas for the doujinshi, when (after the end of the anime, and return to Tokyo) Sousuke and Kaname get closer etc, and Sousuke finally opens up his heart and tells her all the stuff that had being eating him up inside ever since his childhood, in a very cute & romantical stuff where she consolates him, (hard to keep them in character, but it's possible.......just that I most likely won't have the time to draw it, unfortunately, and I don't wanna make it into a fanfic cause I really wanna have the images with it. ^_^ )
Speaking of doujinshi/fanzines, does someone knoes about any FMP one??? 'o' I'm trying to collect them, but it's really hard to find any. When I went to Japan last week, I bought 2 doujinshi, but it was haaard to find them! ^^
In particular, I've been looking to the volume 1 or "Daring Wandering", of which I bought the volume2, but any doujinshi will be welcome. (anything on FMP is very welcome, *lol* ^__^ )
Daring wandering is the tile of a doujinshi that has a lot of comical stories, by some people who draw huge well! ^_^ Unfortunately, the author's site is down right now. -_-;
So if anyone wanna sell, or scan doijinshi, or knows about any site that might be selling it, about FMP, please say me?? \\^___^//
I recently joined also Jae-san's mailing list, so if anyone from here is in there too, we can talk also in there. ^_^

hehh, I sometimes do talk a lot, huh... *lol* ^^;;
^^; Mostly isn't info but theories, althought they're all based on the stuff I mentioned from the 2 manga series and from the anime...
Actually I wonder if Shoji Gatoh also did the anime stuff, I mean, if any detail in it came from him, or if they changed the stuff... (specially because of Sousuke snipping of Gaulun, while I'd have rather saw it as a direct confrontation.... ^^ )

Well, considering that Sousuke is a smart soldier, I wouldn't believe him going hand-to-hand with Gaulun as a little kid. Sniping isn't easy, either, but it's much more 'equal' for the small kid.Kodachiko wrote::D hehh, I sometimes do talk a lot, huh... *lol* ^^;;

Finally! A worthy posting rival!
(who can post the longest, rambling, chatty posts? )
I have to re-read your post, but a couple of quick points-
The Ikinari series is pretty different from the other fmp series-
I'm pretty curious about the extent of the differences, but Ikinari-Sousuke's background is different so I, personally, haven't felt comfortable combining it with the other versions.
Maybe between you and ruri, we can learn alot more!
Gatoh does have a scriptwriting credit for the anime, but it's second credit (I forget who's first)- I have no idea how much influence he had on it.
My feeling is, more than other print authors have in anime verions of their works (some manga-ka have no input on their series anime forms)- but that's just a personal guess. I really don't know.
I love theories
Oh yeah, I was going to say that I don't think S+K are *directly* based on K+K either, but I do think there was some intent to make all of the fmp characters appear (shallowly) comparable to other well-known characters/ stereotypes.
FMP is a parody, as much as it's own, real story
(unlike other parody shows like excel saga, project ako, or even nadesico, FMP's parody type jokes are mostly subtle- if you don't get it, you don't miss it.)
The audience applauded, even though it was not clear what Bush meant.
^_^;
Oh, I didn't meant he choose to fight Gaulun, he'd have been dumb if he had choose that, *lol*
I believe that he might have got captured, then Gaulun tried to get from him the info of where Kalinin could be. Then, with some help or because of Mythrill allies attacked the place or whatever, Sousuke manages to escape and shoots Gaulun in the head, taking him sorta by surprise.
That's the theory I had, until I watched the anime, *lol* ^^; but then again, my theory could still work with the anime, if Sousuke snipped on Gaulun after their confrontation.
After all, Gaulun fought an amazing amount of people during his life, and still, he recognized Sousuke no problem, remembered his name and even developped an obsession on him after some more fights. I think it's very unlikely that they never really fought until then... Plus during the post-plane hijacking incident's fight (anyway in the manga), Gaulun was really talking to Sousuke like he knew him, the way he acts usually etc. So they for sure met before, and more than once, I think.
I just guess it probably wasn't very happy for Sousuke (nor his choice) to fight Gaulun when he was a kid, *lol* that for sure! ^_^;
That's what lead to my ideas for a fanzine that I described in the huge long impossible to read post, *lol*

Well, considering that Sousuke has been HURTING Gaulun ever since headshootting him as a kid, I doubt Gaulun could really NOT remember the kid, later, neh? And anyway, that sniping was done after Sousuke and that friend of his, who were in patrol or picket (don't remember which) were the sole remaining survivors of that massacre in the 'fort'. I don't think Sagara-kun wouldn't snap after seeing what was left of the people he had been living with when heavy machine guns had raked them. And remember, someone did bury them, I doubt it was Gaulun and the KGB people.

Oh, hai hai. But it's just that in my opinion, if Sousuke had just snipped on Gaurun and that's it, Gaurun might not even have saw him. After all in the anime, we see that Gaurun is going to fight Kalinin, then oh surprise, he gets shot in the head and collapses, as Sousuke fired at him from a hiding spot.
He has to have met Sousuke before to be able to see his face and remember it, as well as his ways to act etc, since it's thanks to that that he recognized him as Kashim in the hijacking incident. ^^ Not right away since he grew up, but pretty fast still... he had to have memorized his face, and just being shot without even seeing him wouldn't work in my opinion (specially cause Gaurun also said stuff about the way Sousuke acts, in the manga anyway, so he did knew him better than just that one time). ^^ At least, that's what I think.
