Tonight would be no different than the last two.
Lt. Cmdr. Kalinin did not expect much sleep tonight, and had no misplaced expectation of any sleep being restful in nature.
The abduction of multiple Whispered individuals was disturbing, especially taken in conjunction with the Intelligence data he was currently reviewing.
The kidnapping of two particular young women hit closer to home, effecting all of the crew of the TDD-1, and sending shockwaves throughout the entire Mithril family.
He thought of Sousuke---ignorant of the current situation---finishing up a small scale operation against a small Chechen faction with stolen tactical nuclear weapons. If he were successful, and was not caught at the center of a small scale nuclear holocaust, he would be returning home to find his girlfriend and Captain missing. He would have to find new strength for his exhausted body and mind. And he would be faced with a series of difficult choices.
Lt. Cmdr. Kalinin sighed, and looked at pictures of his family, living and deceased.
He poured himself the last of his coffee, and took a moment to rub his tired eyes. There was no time to rest. The stack of the most recent memos and scientic reports would not read themselves. Command decisions would fall on his shoulders, and he needed ro be informed. That was true with any mission...and this mission might be the most important that Mithril had even undertaken. It might be the most crucial they would ever face.
Determined, he started to flip through the newest set of papers, highlighting penultimate facts, scribbling down analyses and questions in a memo book. He was a man who was very familiar with concern, doubt, anxiety, and unease. It was not often that he felt himself in the grip of true fear.
With every page that he read, a band of fear constricted tighter and tighter around his heart. There was no room whatsover for error. Consequences could not be any more severe.
Nuclear weapons were a toy, an irritant, in comparison. Nuclear weapons would be rendered obsolete. Freedom could be rendered obsolete.
Before the latest Intelligence discoveries, passed on from contributors in a number of advanced nations, the Lt. Cmdr. had never heard of the science of Scalar Electromagnetics. He was aware of the Electromagnetic research that was common knowledge...but that was an entirely different beast altogether.
The words swam before his eyes, forcing him to concentrate all that much harder.
Nikola Tesla had discoverfed 'radiant energy' which had eventually been researched by the KGB for 30 years, intent on producing weapons from newly discovered longitudinal scalar waves. Nikita Khruschev had spoken in the 1960s about the developement of new superweapons with the power to wipe out all life on earth if used in unrestrained fashion.
The power of such weapons would be unprecidented. The effects were mind-boggling. And unsophisticated devices were already in use or under reasearch in a number of nations.
Ordinary electromagnetic (EM) waves are transverse EM waves, totally different than longitudinal EM waves. Longitudinal waves do not normally exist in our 3-dimensional material world, but rather in the vacuum of seemingly empty space and the time domain. The 4th-dimension is spacetime, and time itself can be viewed as compressed energy.
The formula of E=mc-squared was well known. A lesser known formula also held relevance: E=mt-squared, where t=delta-t, the change in time.
Such a realization gives new relevance to the term 'time-bomb.'
Unified field theory was based on energetics. Bioenergetics, specifically, deals with field and matter interactions within living things. Psychoenergetics refers to mind operations and mind-matter interactions.
Lt. Cmdr. Kalinin paged an aide, and asked for a fresh pot of coffee and a small turkey sandwhich to be delivered to his quarters. He decided to take a cold shower before continuing any further. After his brief respite, he resumed his reading.
Scalar energy was the brainchild of Lt. Col. Thomas A. Beardley. If his theories were correct, it would be possible to build devices that could alter graviy, time, inertia, and the apparent mass of objects.
Scalar energy in the vacuum of space is called 'zero point' energy.
It is possible to tap the vast seething oceam of energy in the vacuum and transduce it into ordinary transverse EM energy in our world. This could lead to the further developement o weapons with unimaginable power.
Governments pretended that such theories and weapons do not exist. Such a truth would prove too alarming to the general populace, some folks would claim, and claim correctly. However, there were other motives as well.
Motionless Energy Generators (MEG) were patented and would some day be available to the consumer. To the layperson, they would seem a free source of energy. But, the concept of free energy is a threat to world order and big business.
The Lt. Cmdr. read through a report detailing the Yakuza's involvement with scalar technology. The Kawai engine project was killed in Los Angeles by Yakuza, who took over control of the company, appropriated the invention, and managed the fate of the inventor.
There were also hints that the Aum Shinrikyo group had been involved in Japanese cover-ups.
There were people in the the know who considered the actions of govermnet officials to be high treason, as they consciously avoided acting on knowledge that might eventually make or break the defences of their nations.
Many different weapons had been either conceptualized or built. Scalar interferometers. Tesla howitzers. Tesla domes. Earthquake and wealther machines. Solar storm devices. Mind attacks. Quantum potential weapons.
Scalar energy longitudinal wave howitzers, if perfected, could change the face of warfare forever. Such a weapon could blast targets at any disatnce, all from a single small control room. Due to the connection to the time domain, the destructive power would be delivered instantaneously...faster than the speed of light.
A Tesla howitzer is made up of two scalar antennae and their controlling computers. Such a device can deliver an enormous amount of energy to the distant target site. They were capable of multiple modes of action. An 'exothermic mode' would send blasts of immense EM outward at the target site, striking with a force equivalent to a nuclear explosion. A lesser power setting could simply destroy all electronics in the target area. Any weapon or weapons system could be rendered inoperable, if not destroyed outright. On an even smaller scale, such weapons could be used for assassinations, able to reach any person in the world at any spot on the globe.
The 'endothermic mode' can suck the energy out of a target area, resulting in a tremedous blast of cold at the site. Equipment might be able to function after thawing...but living creatures would be dead. The two modes could be used together to alter the weather anywhere on the earth. The waves from the weapons would not travel through the 3-dimensional world; rather, they would arise from the vacuum of space at the target site itself.
A third mode has been labeled by some as the 'mindsnapper mode.' It affects electromagnetic mind-body connections, and low level attacks are capable of causing unconsciousness. Slightly stronger levels could create an effective hypnogogic state in which the affected individual would be highly succeptible to suggestions or commands. High levels of 'mindsnapper mode' attack could lead to immediate death.
Large scale weapons were a large enough concern. Smaller size portable weapons could just as easily take out people as they could any weapon known to man...with a single shot.
For many years, the Soviet nations had a large array of unsophisticated weapons known as the Woodpecker Grid. Why had such an advantage never been capitalized upon? The fact remained, that a single accident could lead to the extermination of all life on earth. In addition, there was a growing balance of power as other nations came into possession of conceptually similar devices. The opportunity for true Armageddon had been present, despite the blissful ignorance of most of the planet.
Defensive purposes could also be served. A Tesla dome, possibly hundreds of miles in diameter, could serve as an impenetrable shield to all material weapons. They could also serve as a barrier to radioactivity.
Secretive governments with such nascent technology presented a grave enough treat by themselves. Worse, black-op groups within some administrations had appropriated such technology through immoral and unethical means. Once such secrets were in the hands of such shifting alliances, the information became veritably untraceable and the accountability became non-existant.
Lt. Cmdr. Kalinin looked through a number of case reports. Minor scalar weapons may have been used to cause earthquakes and volcanic erruptions. Various sightings of cold explosions were mentioned. Flying macines commonly identified as UFOs were likely experimental anti-gravity craft and hyperspace vehicles. Such latter craft would have the ability to seemingly dematerialize and rematerialize.
There were also reports from the Medical division. It was thought that EM could cause a wide variety of human disease. Whole populations could be targeted, and small groups may have already been affected. An unusually large number of Necrotizing Fasciitis cases were reported in some areas over a very short interval of time. Some physicians also cited Gulf War Syndrome as a possible effect.
The Psychology & Mental Health division sent over the known facts involving Capt. Button and his A10. He had been flying over Arizona and suddenly lost mental awarenss, flying his plane out of the state, eventually plummeting to his death. Some sources belive he was under the experimental control of the KGB for one hour or so.
The expanded possibility of such weapons was theorized as well. A large weapon could hypothetically trasnform vast areas of human populations into an essential ant society, completely under the control of those possessing the weapon.
Russia, Brazil, China, and Israel were listed as nations possibly possessing quantum potential weapons, the next generation of longitudinal wave devices.
Other similar reports blurred before his eyes, and he later found that he had fallen asleep at his desk.
It was time for a break. He needed time in the submarine gymnasium area, and he thought he would break routine and have a large breakfast this morning. There was a full slate of briefings, meeting, and strategy sessions ahead. He needed to treat himself as well as possible.
He thought about generalities now. The scalar weapon threat had apparently be significant for a long time now, buy had fortunately contained a significant number of checks and balances.
However, some shadow group was combing the minds of any Whispered they could find, no doubt looking for Black Technology that might help perfect the longitudinal wave weapons, making them into a practical and exclusive resource. Were that to happen, there would be consequences of unprecidented severity!
Working on the speed bag in the gym, the Lt. Cmdr. thought of Sousuke again. That young man already carried so much weight on his shoulders. Some of the choices he would soon be faced with might break lesser men, whatever their age or level of experience.
He would be allowed to choose which team he went out with. There would be one to rescue Captain Tesstarossa. One to Rescue Kaname Chidori. A small number of others to rescue other Whispered that Mithril had been involved with. Informed members within the U.S. and other governments would be orchestrating their own part of the concerted secretive attacks as well.
Mithril had means to track any Whispered it had prolonged contact with. Fortunately...so far...the holding sites for the captives were limited in number. Sufficient rescue activities may well be possible, even given the limited resources of the organization. As long as the adversary did not discover the method of tracking and subvert it for their own purposes.
The word 'rescue' may just be a euphemism, however. Circumstances may well necessitate a totally different outcome...if any one individual could not be retrieved alive, he or she would then need to be destroyed by whatever means was available. The wellfare of a small number of individuals did not outweigh the well-being of the entire globe.
Sousuke might very well want to lead the team sent in to to free Kaname Chidori. Could he accept that task, knowing full well that he would be the one responsible for her death if the circumstances dictated that necessity?
Could he deal with the specific cruel fact that there might not even be a single Whispered who held any key to the technology that the enemy searched for? Could he order Miss Chidori's death---or carry out that act himself--- knowing that she might very well not need to die?
Would he ever be able to forgive himself if he did not directly try to rescue her...and she died?

*I came across a site by accident once that talked about scalar technology. They make it sound real. In any case, I thought it would make a good danger.
*Sooner or later, it was time for the group behind the Pakistan stuff to raise their ugly head (the whole thing in Pakistan was an attempt to draw away world attention and military resources until it was too late). And, there will be fall-out from the prior traitors in Mithril and their knowledge of who was or might be Whispered.
*One of the protagonists will have an interesting bloodline (the son of someone who we love to hate...one of his by-blows who does not care for his lineage but has picked up his dad's spirit). He may end up being similar in age to Sousuke.
Make a nice opponent while he lasts (which may not be long, or may be like his dad). There may or may not be a lie about shared kinship for Sousuke that will unsettle him some.
*May or may not have a role for Tessa's brother, good or bad or both.
*The intro is all I had plotted out. It certainly will give Sousuke a kick in the gut. Kaname and Tessa are not that happy either. The rest of the story hasn't been worked out yet. May be that Sousuke will rescue Kaname...then head out to help Kurz & Melissa save Tessa, only to be lost himself for a while, giving folks a chance to worry about him. Or, he may help the team rescue Kaname, but roll off to a big fight with the evil dude, not returning for some while due to injuries or whatever. He might find out someone who is a linchpin, and decide that he must follow and destroy that person no matter what it takes or where it takes him.
*I have to decide on ripple effect too...will some people think that Whispered are too dangerous to let live on their own? Will some peope advocate a pogrom? Will Mithril become a safe haven for Whispered? Or will things go on as they had before?
*Lambda driver stuff will needed on both sides. There may be one or more new ARX-7 type AS's. More Venom equivalents. Defensive uses. And, may be some use of the less powerful scalar stuff by the shadow group. Need to determine the overall capability of Mithril...just what forces do they have? Another sub like the TDD-1? Who/what/where related to the construction and funding of the TDD-1. Etc.
*Kicker: an idea I am considering------> certain dentists are in the employ of Mithril...when Whispered visit and are put under for unnecessary dental work ('That's a rather deep cavity, Miss Chidori') they have Black Technology-derived transmitters put in place. Might be the way that the hiddem terrorist sites are found. Might be a way to determine who is funding those sites.
*Given that this battle may have a lot of forces involved, can Mithril remain secret? Probably. Maybe folks will be content to let it remain so if they play a pivotal role in wiping out such a terrible threat.
***Another kicker: Whispered may be important in harnassing technology that blunts or end the global scalar threat. Those outted by the conflict may be forced to undergo clandestine testing at various sites with various world representatives present. That might lead to Kaname (protected by Sousuke) being tested in New York...family interactions insue. Will have to figure some way to have folks just tap the areas she has knowledge in, rather than extract all her secrets...why would she rate Sousuke's protection if she's not still a valuable commodity?

Story- and idea-wise, sounds VERY interesting. The Mithril<=>Whispered
idea sounds like a rather intriguing plot hook... something I'm trying to
work out for my next chapter of my own fic. Other than that, ALWAYS
interested in an idea-exchange to get new balls rolling

Yeh, breaks are good. Brakes, too. 
I'll kick out some of the personal stuff preceding the mission briefing in this arc, since I can write that off the top of my head. It will be a while before I can plot the hard stuff. Maybe a good while. Too many variables...and things should make some kind of sense.
Yeh, I have to consider the Mithril angle. And what happens to people who are 'outted' by the shadow group.
