Oodles of good stuff, I'm glad someone else is here to bring this stuff up cuz I'm not sure enough about my japanese and story sums can be misleading...

Anyway- yeah, Mithril would have discharged him- but like beckster said, they need him.
It gives himt he leverage to get what he wants- and considering that he had never really wanted for anything before...*shrug*

Now Tessa...don't forget she's only 16 years old....a teenage girl with a crush and more authority than is good for her...

In the beginning Sousuke didn't really understand the boundries between his private and working life, so, as we can see in the anime, he really doesn't know how to deal with the captian's intrusions over that boundry.
He doesn't know when he can say no. So he goes along with everything....
But...when he does start to figure it out, I don't think it makes an emotional nut out of him when he decides where that personal boundry rightfully is. I think they both crossed the line (her in ordering him and him is disobeying)- but it was because of their prior interactions too.
But, although he possibly went about it in a way that wasn't the best, he was only going after what he should be able to have (a personal life).
The audience applauded, even though it was not clear what Bush meant.

Good point you got there Jae. Much better explained than what I could've done. For Sousuke, its almost like being a newborn "so there really IS more to life than what I was brought up in or was made to think."
If God were suddenly condemned to live the life which he has inflicted on men, he would kill himself."

Yeah, he really is- I really hadn't though Sousuke was supposed to come across as truely unemotional, when you contrast him with Zaido there seems like a huge difference. He just hadn't had, hmm..any experience where outwardly dealing with emotions was acceptable.

I have a novel question about Kalanin.
Was there any sort of suggestion that perhaps he was hoping that sending Sousuke on that mission would result in him getting normal-life experiences?
It seems that there may be some subtle feeling there....?? *shrug*

Good question. I keep forgetting that Kalanin and Sousuke worked together when he was a kid. Not sure if it does say in the novel but bits and pieces that we see on the show, I would think that yes he perhaps was hoping for Sousuke to experience normal life things. Between how he reacted to the transfer to the school when Sousuke asked him and a few conversations that Kalanin might have had with Tesssa on the ship when he was flashing back on when they fought together. I think that Kalanin has some sort of "father" like qualities when it comes to Sousuke.

you guys are right.. kalinin was the only one (from my understanding.. i could be wrong) who wasn't angry/ disappointed/ at sousuke for wanting to go back to tokyo.. when sousuke was allowed to go.. kalinin said something like " you've grown up" or " you seem mature".. i have to get back on the exact quote.. . ( in a day or two.. quite busy at the moment)
and one more thing.. the "other" guard code name is "rei" which means "ghost spirit"

Why am I not surprised? He doesn't seem much more emotional in the novel than he did in the anime. They are both... stoic. Well okay, not that far, but close enough.

I don't know, from what Ruri is daying he probably is more expressive in the novel than the anime. The things is it's two different interpretations of the same character (and story line) I like that. I think it gives a story a decent 'replay' quality to it if the characters can draw you in enough. I'd like to see Sousuke lose his temper or show a tinge of concern or another emotion every so often. It gives him a more humanist quality about him, making him more 3D.

Then again maybe I should shut up till I have actually finished FMP...

Eh... do you mean never finished the novels or never finished the series? Still though, from what I'm reading (and getting a headache from... gah... kanji is evil I tell ya!), he doesn't seem much more expressive. He just churns out orders and doesn't show much in the way of... well... side emotions. Then again, I only have the first book.
