Shinetacular?

Honestly if i had the 20 grand in home entertainment aquipment it would take for that to make a diffrerence then it'd be wicked cool.
cause then I'd have a 20 grand entertainment center and no reason to ever leave my house again.

Though on a serious note, it is an interesting development, see how it plays out with sales.

ADV has signed a pact with the Devil ....

This is the Microsoft dvd "Standard" a new way for MS to get into your living room.

"Can I help you?, "you know this section is.." she broke off her sentence as the man walked towards her and nodded, "I think you can Captain".
Tessa looked down, "I haven't been called Captain in 4 years," Wha..what do you want?"
He gave her a devious grin, "I'm here to make sure you keep your promise."

OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Heheheh

LOL

hahahaahah

BWAHAHAHAAHHA!!!!!

And to think that the original material is NTSC resolution (720x480 interlaced)!!!!

THERE IS NO BENEFIT IN MAKING IT HD!!!!!!

Man, they sure are taking advantage of folk's limited technical knowledge.

@Noir
there's MUCH MUCH dirtier words to describe WMV9

http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/article/1765/ ...how's this for a comment about FMP!-HD

BTW, Doom9 (a respected codec comparer) has released his latest
codec comparison. His view on WMV9?
Doom9 wrote:With WMV9 being standardized as VC1, we'll probably not see more features in it, but having a standardized bitstream and featureset doesn't mean there cannot be any progress. It's just that I have not really seen it since the beta. But, detail wise some things have changed and I recall rating WMV9 in the "less details" area, which it no longer is (if you look beyond the problems that WMV9 had on my machine). But, if I were a broadcaster or potential user of HD DVD/ Blu-Ray, seeing the result of WMV9 and ateme's AVC codecs, I'd definitely go for the AVC standard.

Yeah, that's actually what I was wondering about. I don't really understand how these dvds could have such better video quality unless they had... the original digital masters. I don't know, but I would suspect ADV would have to pay out the butt to get them from the japanese....

I'm just confused as to why they're doing this. Targeting a very niche demographic by stepping into a format battle.

I doubt that they even exist. Work is usually done in the target resolution, working at a higher resolution will result in artifacting/distortion when you convert it. Even if you work in rgb color, conversion into y,r-g,b-g color (a.k.a. YUV, which is what NTSC uses as a color space) will introduce loss of color resolution. (and any coversion costs $$$ anyways)

Hmm... I believe all 3 shows were created digitally from the paint on up.
(I know FMP was, I believe Noir was, not sure on Rax but I expect it's so given the time of creation)

Wouldn't it just be a matter of doing 2 compilations at different settings when the shows were first produced?
(don't know if 'compile' is the best tech word)

Has Japan been moving towards HD in the past few years? If so, it just seems good business sense to stash away a HD version for later re-release. The only bar being it would be cost-prohibitive but such a thing wouldn't cost all that much, would it (not at all like re-filming pre-digi shows)....

I still doubt ADV would have such a thing, if they existed, unless perhaps the japanese companies are also planning similar releases soon (which I have no idea about).

I mean, I don't really know.

In order to do it in 2 resolutions would mean duplicating the work.

My only guess would be that it was HD to begin with and then ADV squished it into 720x480i. But I don't recall the original (as aired in Japan) being HD.

ADV did "fudge" surround sound (the scene with Tessa and Kalinin walking through the sub's hallway, with the camera at floor level staying in one place and panning, which was the only use my rear speakers got from thoses DVDs. marketing ploy LOL ).

Making 2 versions would be effectivly making 2 anime series in parallel. Render time always takes *ALOT* longer than artist time (I can set up a basic 30 second logo fly by in 5 mins, it takes a couple of days to render at 740x480, raise the resolution, rendering time goes up by a scale of 2x, i.e. double the res, quadruple the render time.)

Keep in mind though that 2d art has to be done twice as pixels will shift around and disappear if you just do a pure rescaling of the image, retouching always ends up requiring more work than just redoing it at a higher/lower res.

There is no magic wand (pun for you fellow photoshoper's) that can rescale the image and give you acurate detailing. The end result is always inferior in quality no matter which way you go ( up the res, or reduce the res that is) with just rescaling.

Its just marketing. Like the 5.1 surround sound of the original release. Probably it will be followed by the 'perfect collection', and the rest. :)

Sony IS pushing Bluray, so I'm betting some animation studios are either
getting 'nudged' to start working towards that rez in their source stuff, or
are getting inital production samples to 'encourage' them.

@Killer
thx for the background prod info there. I used to do some video & animation
work but never really paid much attention to downscaling rez 'cuz I never
messed around with broadcast. For me, the good ol' 1280x1024
.30dpi non-interlaced montior will reign king for viewing :-D

why is it ppl love 1280x1024 when it is not a proper 4:3 aspect ratio? 1280x960 is a proper ratio and tis wha i use.. :)
A forum post should be like a skirt. Long enough to cover the subject material, but short enough to keep things interesting.

Something that may be the proverbial fly in the ointment in adopting VC1
But that doesn’t mean that the other 11 companies will feel obliged to give Microsoft what it wants, and they are sure to be bristling at the thought that their Intellectual Property has been “given away” by Microsoft for years now without them realizing it.
Crapola and a whole lotta other words... but since when is this a new situation for MS?
