...finally got a watch of it. Yeah, they had SUCH and chance, and strung
fans out for SO long waiting for 5x 30min eps to come out -- 2 years and
counting by my reckoning... so how do we end this brilliantly started piece?

Pull an Eva and do the 'do you want to save or destroy the world
little human, while the chars we've spend so long developing and made
endearing are dying all around us?' BS   Gawd.....

CG was of course to DIE for!! Glad they saved SOMEthing for the end...
the first A2A between Shin & Fokker v. Tau's fiancee and DD at first felt
like an excuse to stick to plain A2A, but then they pull out the brass knuckles
and hit you with these absolutely BRILLIANT tranformations and dogfights!

I agree with what's been said about using the music plot device alittle TOO
out of (Macross) believability... tho personally what I find more disgusting
is that this was sold as a PREquel to all the Macrosses. Other than a few
cutscenes lifted off CNN war footage (Gulf I in particular) and a few Fokker 'noobie'
speeches, NOTHING was shown of the anti-unification wars mentioned...
or links made to what's to happen in 10? years time when the original
SDF-1 was to crash onto earth and lead to the discovery of our Zentradi cousins
-- I personally believed it'd eventually be shown that Shin & Sara were
Hikaru's parents he mentioned in the opening eps of Macross SDF.

Instead, it reads more like an excuse to take the music-overcomes-all formula,
throw in some primitive mysticism about bird-humans visiting earth eons
ago -- albeit scripted rather belivably -- but only tangentially linked
to the technology eventually shown in subsequent series, stamp 'Macross'
onto it and (re)sell to the masses

[superrant]Other points they started but didn't finish:
- what's Fokker's relationship to DD? They have some history going back
to flight school, but after that?
- what's up with Nora & her past? She's a woman with a MAJOR beef
against the UN, but exactly WHAT?!
- how's Shin's mentioning of the two suns in ep 1 tie up with SDF,
if at all? My watching of the original Macross gave me the impression
SDF-1 WAS the reason the anti-unification wars started, yet Shin doesn't
seem to live anywhere near where SDF crashed.
- how's bird human tie in with the Zentradi if at all? That was the implication
thruout MZ, referring to some of the advanced technologies to
eventually come out in SDF.
- the Mayans themselves. As I said, their legends were brilliantly scripted,
but alittle too convenient and contrived, and given short shrift other than
a convenient plot device.
[/superrant]

Well, MZ had it's moments, it was enjoyable when it needed to be, made
me sentimental when it needed to be....

// stamps finished on it and considers when it'll get out of litigation for
legitimate R1 licencing

...while I dig up my other eps for a MZ marathon

Well I saw ep 5 finally.

I am wondering if Rick Berman of Star Trak fame had a hand in this travesty.
It has his handiwork all over it.

I believe a lynch mob is on order,

Get your pitchforks and torches boys and girls, its a beatdown.
".... that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion - that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain..."

exerpt from Abe Lincoln's Gettysburg Address.

Well, one could look at it as a prequel more to the OAV "Do You Remember Love", and the discovery of the "Proto-Culture", ie. the Culture all other cultures were developed from by Hikaru and Lisa (Misa?). I don't recall if the original Macross series (NOT Robotech) made the same connection. I have the series, haven't watched it completely yet. The rain of death on earth had actually already happened before "Do You Remember Love" starts- when Hikaru and Lisa end up on earth after escaping the Zentraedi, earth was already destroyed.

I do know that in Robotech, (and perhaps in Macross as well) the crash of the
SDF 1 basically led to the _end_ of the Global Civil War as I remember it being called in Robotech. In Macross Zero, I think it was the other way around, wasn't it? So I don't know which version was the original backround for MACROSS.

And the 2 suns thing, that Shin talked about would be a nuclear explosion, not the crash of the SDF, I believe.

I think it's abit unrealistic to expect the different series to be completely compatible with each other anyway. With so many years, and much of the
original viewer base probably not even all that interested in something from their youth, and new people working on the project, the temptation, and need, to create something original that appeals to new viewers as well, without confining themselves to an old framework is to be expected.

Heck, look at the Star Wars Prequels- there are enough continuity fanatics
out there howling already... ^_^

...watched all of original Macross and I don't think any further connection
was made in that regard... simply that humans and Zentradi were decendant
from and even older 'Protoculture.' Don't recall hearing if Hikaru & Lisa
were involved in it tho.

Prequels mean different things to different ppl... unfortunately, its the ones
with the money that make the ultimate decision...
