Well, just for me "Whispered" do look like natural neural network. They DO communicate with each other and according to some phrases the FMP series (yeah, I know that the English translation is not so good, but nevertheless), it is possibly the source of BT as well (the moment when Tessa and Chidori talk about "whisperedness").

"Neural network" looks quite real. Not only because it is the practical way to unify worldwide knowledge (yes, I mean what Internet may become 100-200 years later). It's because Tessa and Chidori REALLY communicate in the series, exchanging knowledge. Chidori certainly has her way to communicate with Sousuke too.

About Sousuke. I hardly doubt the statement about him being not 'whispered'. More probably he is 'occasional' whispered. He can activate and use 'lambda' device, much like Gauln (Gauron, but I do prefer 'Gauln' version) and the boy in the Begemoth case. The activation requires certain degree of concentration and willpower, so it is possible only on high desperation moments. Boy in the Begemoth was surely put up by the drug, but it looks like this drug can not awake 'whisperedness', it is used to make person 'overconcentrated' (remember the beginning of the Begemoth series where this boy attacks counter man due to overconcentration).

perhapse you mean something different. Neural networks are special decision chain logic networks used for AI systems aand have nothing to do with shared knowledge, or the internet for that matter. Its common to confuse this, since Nueral nets are designed immitate brain functions. however its not in the informational context, but rather a decision system capable of self-learning by weight readjustment/rebalancing. It doesn't have a 'memory' as in a knowledge-base or data warehouse, just a set of weights represented in a series of linear equations.

Kinda like a state machine, but with its state transitions being dynamically qualified by a set of weighted equations, and it revisits the weights to move the resulting state closer to the requisit state. All this is done via parallel processing, making state changes and corrections inistantanious.

Yeah, I know. Now imagine multistate machine of high complexity in which any human brain is a mere cell compared to the overall. And... yes, Internet has something to do with neural networks as well. Each host makes certain decisions and state changes based on other host's requests. Human brains are included into the projects as mere cells (remember Linux ;) ) imposing limits on state changes and triggering these changes here and there, they also undergo state changes under the hosts' (Internet hosts, I mean) requests via displays/speakers/etc/etc.

We may call this brain network or information interchange network. The sum is the same nevertheless. Humans are cells here, they undergo changes, they even readjust weights (!) of certain information or triggers ("events"). And yes! It is a mere decision system. Cells have their own external memory ("memory") and their own neural networks ("brain") to perform very complex state updates.

;) I know I'm braindead for sure ;)

Whispereds

Post by AEmer »

edit: This post contains spoilers, since the majority is from ODBD and onwards. It's impossible to continue this discussion without accessing as much information about these things as possible, however, so I won't try to *spoiler tag* the individual things.

Alright, let me try to fill in a few blanks here too, since there are some things not yet mentioned, even though they're pretty much the foundation of the series:

Kaname is a _potential_ whispered, that is to say, she follows all the characteristics of a whispered, untill she is put into that very first test tube.

The people who found this out are, in fact, the KGB. How did this happen, you ask?, well. The soviet union and the united states obviously want a piece of the black technology pie. These two major powers have been left out of the loop by the organisations Amalgam and Mithril.
It's kinda obvious that Mithril is either selling out of it's secrets to the US (who, at this point, have finalized prototypes of the M9), or the US are awfully good at copying mithrils technology since it appears they regularly employ mithril.
It's the same thing with the Soviet Union and Amalgam; the Amalgam AS's are being copied into soviet production. Anyway.

Amalgam, who orchestrated the kidnapping of Kaname found out that Kaname was a target because the KGB contracted Gauron to work retrieve her for them. As it turns out, the KGB made a mistake in contracting him, since he was not just a mercenary, he was also working for Amalgam.

The KGB's interest in Kaname was what made Mithril guard her. Mithril found out the KGB had a special interest in her because her name was on a data disk recovered by none other than Sagara Sousuke during an operation that was probably initiated to secure a young redhaired whispered girl. As she was driving away with what was probably a mithril operative, a hind combat chopper opened fire upon the car, and she miraculously survived without many bruises - afterwards, Sousuke jammed the Hind to the ground, and saved the girl. The dead mithril operative had apparently also secured a disc with the name of one Kaname Chidori, and why the KGB was interested in her.

What then happened was, the Tuetha de Danaan moved into position, and Tessa chose to eliminate the possibility of any further whispered research on the part of the KGB by blasting the research facility that had detained the red haired whispered girl with one very large payload in what must've been a cloacked long range ballistic cruise missile.

This was supposed to effectively take care of the problem of the KGB trying to extract any other whispereds they may have 'discovered' in their 'research' - and for all we know, it did. It might also have secured Kanames safety, and that was Tessa initially concluded, but she was not so fortunate - being as it was, Gauron, not to be mistaken for an ordinary mercenary, had happened upon a whispered candidate by chance, and he wasn't about to give up on her now. So, he made sure amalgam would initiate a kidnapping, and that's when both mithril, we, and amalgam got confirmation that she was indeed a whispered and not just some teen mumbling weird words to herself in her sleep. And there we have it: the first whispered candidate that both Amalgam and Mithril know about...and for some reason, it goes against mithrils ethics to seize her, and Amalgam thinks it too much of a bother, or perhaps find it to their advantage that they now have the ability to survey the movements of Mithril agent Sousuke fairly accurately...whatever the reason, nobody grabs Kaname.

What may be a bit pecculiar is how the KGB discovered that Kaname was a whispered candidate. Well, that's fairly simple to explain. That you're a candidate for something like an inherited desease means that your parrents genetics fit a certain pattern. That you're a candidate for recieving the pulitzer price means you meet a certain set of requirrements.

That Kaname Chidori is a Whispered candidate means that she exhibited patterns that were much alike patterns expressed particularly by those who are whispereds.
That the KGB was able to deduct this means that they've had access to a broad range of data, for one. One of the patterns very probable for a whispered is that he or she was born on the 25th of december 1985 (or was it 1984?, I forget...it's only 4 days from my own birthday, so I've probably got it confused up), and if the KGB's got that one figured out, then they can narrow down their search considerably and look at other factors that are collected by the local authorities.

A list of whispereds we've seen would be:

- Red haired fingerbite chick
- Kaname
- Tessa
- Terrorist Freak
- The builder of the ARX-7 Arbalast (presumed dead)
- Leonard

It would seem obvious that there are far more. The pacific christmas was also a floating laboratory for testing whispereds - apparently, that kind of testing requirres a lot of advanced equipment and a lot of electricity. Either way, to have a ship with that stuff sail around checking for whispered is an indication that there are several. An interesting side note is the name, Pacific Christmas, which doesn't make much sense - unless you consider that whispereds were all born on Christmas day, and symbolism like that has it's way of working itself into these kinds of novels...

A pet theory of mine has been, for a long time, that it was in fact Tessas brother who was working on the ARX-7 - that he so intrudingly questions Sousuke about it makes it seem even more probable that he at the very least knew the people working on it personally....but that's for another day.

I also have some more observations on a number of things, like how all of this information is going to fit into a grander scheme, and whether or not there actually is a grander scheme...but those, too, are for another day.

Amalgam doesn't care what happens to Sousuke, they wouldn't need to watch his movements, they're better than that. Amalgam can take Kaname almost anytime, anyplace. But, Leonard must have done something because he wants her to love him, so he probably prolonged the higher ups from moving into action to retrieve her.

Kaname-Probability of being a "Whispered": 88% (According to Muller’s law of statistics)
Who is Muller?

The terrorist freak, Takuma Kugyama, had to be reformed to operate the Lamba Driver on the Behemoth, making him exhibit properties of a reformed Whisper, but Mithril must have some experience with that because when Tessa comes to the research facility, both she and Kalinin seem to know what a reformed person is, symptoms, and they tried to decide if the treatment succeeded, making Takuma a Whispered, which I guess it did. I'm guessing that becoming a Whispered through that way doesn't make you a very powerful Whispered, it probably only makes you exhibit signs of a Whispered, but a natural one would probably be a stronger Whispered. Takuma other than the fact he could operate the Lamba Driver on the Behemoth, showed no other Whispered traits. Just like Amalgam using A21 as a pawn and giving them the Behemoth-type unit, they probably with their given research reformed Takuma for the Behemoth. I don't know why they would help them if all they were going to do was wreck a city for approximately 40 hours. Amalgam could just hit the world's greatest cities, or their militaries all over the world since they are capable with the weapons, and resources to do such a thing. That's why I can't wait to hear the destruction of Operations Headquarters, Merida Base, etc.

Well, Mithril and Amalgam operate in different ways. Mithril tries to help the world, so their relationships with other nations is not really of distrust or hostility for those they help. But Amalgam is an organisation all about making and testing their new weapons, all they do is use others, so them helping the Soviet Union in some way is to get them to do what they want. In Continuing On My Own, Part B, Leonard explains the destruction the West Pacific Fleet wrought on them. One part, he says "They're stolen, but twelve Mistral 2's..." Would they be the mass production model of the Shadow? If they are, we know that the Soviet Union is researching these ASes that the West don't know about yet. They have specs greater than that of M9's. So that means Amalgam stole it from the Soviet Union.

Everybody has their own theories on Whispered being genetic/experimentation/anomaly. I would be on just plain human anomaly. Though I'm not too sure why being born on a certain day would do anything, unless it was the position of the moon or something. Maybe it is just symbolic. Also, if Leonard is Tessa's twin, then he to was born on the 24th. But he seems way taller than Tessa, or maybe cause she's petite.

I'm guessing this picture shows us all the Whispered we know currently, and more. http://fmp.abstratica.org/images/mags/d ... -01-08.jpg

It could be simple field-recon. He’s a SRT unit with a permanent residence, who’s often shipped to and from the TDD-1.

Anyway, I've both seen the anime and read the manga - But nowhere have I been lead to the conclusion that Takuma was not born a whispered.
In fact, I believe that he had been recieving treatment in order to exhibit much more agressive impulses, not to change his whispered-status. He took the medication to keep these agressive impulses under control, but then, he dropped them and didn't take them, and jumped a man because of his tie.
However, that is speculation - all we really know is that he underwent some kind of treatment, that he was a whispered, and that he grew very agressive when he didn't take his meds -

The reason I believe it was a treatment to make him exceedingly agressive is, well, because the only people who have been able to successfully use the lambda driver are those who are able to express extremely powerful and agressive brain waves. They channel their anger into kinetic power. It would make sense, then, that it requirres both being a whispered and being highly emotional to be the pilot of a monstrousity such as the Behemoth; the Behemoths control room in many ways looks like the ladys chappel within the tuatha de danaan, and only whispereds are able to use that, supposedly, so that would make it all fit.

Anyway, I've given the whispered some thought; I don't believe it's genetic manipulation. The prime reason is that they all seem to be born on the same day; and basically, you can't control the length of pregnancy like that.

Of course, should it be a coincidence that Tessa and Kaname are born on the same day, then it's possible, but I doubt that. I believe, rather, that it has got to do with a kind of wave phenomenon that has permanently altered a set number of children born on the same date. Such a phenomenon isn't too far fetched, considering the nature of the lambda driver and the ressonance phenomenon.
The one of two main problems with this theory, the way I see it, is that the wave pattern must've originated from somewhere. I'm not saying that the wave actually brought the black technology into the whispereds minds, though, I think they're doing that themselves, through functioning in a large 'brain wave' network. If any of you has seen the short anime 'Lain', this idea should instantly seem familiar to you.

The idea would be that the whispered are being whispered to by 'eahcother', subconciously, like the suggested brainwave network from Alex talked about....and then, through drawin upon eachothers knowledge, the whispered evolve into individual geniouses, with areas where they're individually capable.

but to return to the main problems with this theory : who or what send out the first 'signal' that made some children born on the 24th whispered? And if the whispered were all born on the same day, does this mean that all the advanced technology that Mithril and Amalgam have access to has been designes by kids? Are the savage and the M5 designs made by 5 years old kids?

- the second could be answered by suggesting that the majority of the research to make the savage and the M5 had already been completed when the whispered came into play, and that yes, every other piece of weaponry has been designed by kids.

The first could be answered by some explanation about how a biologist discovered a neural uplink thing common in one out of 100,000 babies or so, an uplink that could be activated upon childbirth through the use of electromagnetic radiation (photons) of a specific wavelength, and he decided to build a device to send this signal on precisely the 25th of december 1985...

Personally, I think this explanation is the one Gatou will be going with, but it's all speculation.

Takuma exhibited the side effects because his reformation wasn't perfect. He had to take the pills to keep it under control, which is why Seina slapped him because he dropped them in the aircraft's toilet, so then at the airport he lost it ever since. When he rejoined his "sister", he probably got the pills so that's why he's in control. Relating Whispers and anger...Kaname doesn't get mad when she uses her dormant powers...

"Your tie is crooked."
"It's none of your business, fix your damn tie!"
"Hurry up and fix your tie! I can't take it anymore!"
"You think I'm going to forgive you? He's laughing at me! Sister!"

Using the lambda driver isn't normally related to whispered powers, it's related to anger. Sousuke is not a whispered.

Actually, the Lamba Driver is run by emotions, which anger is one. Sousuke isn't a Whispered, but he can still use the Lamba Driver on the ARX-7 Arbalest. Also like Gauron and his Codarl and Venom.

yes, and anger is an emotion, which is why the lambda driver is related to anger...

The point being that him (*edit!: him is reffering to Takuma, not Sousuke) being a whispered isn't related to being able to use the lambda driver efficiently, whereas him being able to experience powerful emotions is...which is why I believe his treatment has been to improve his sensitivety and allow him to have much stronger emotions.

Anyway, could you quote the point where it's related that he wasn't born a whispered? If it's to be found anywhere within the manga volumes 1-7 or within any of the anime or any of the translations released by boku tachi...

the Lamba Driver is run by emotions

I don't think you can strictly say that, to utilise the LD one has to make a "mental image" kinda like telekinesis, visualising for example a shield.
Emotion only seems to strenghten that "mental image" and when sousuke got "emotional" the LD failed.

Well, I was thinking along the lines of if you feel you need to protect yourself, and you have made a rapport with the Lamba Driver, as in being comfortable and true in using it, then you will be protected. I read somewhere that it was run on emotions, since it would explain some stuff. He did get emotional, but like others have said, was not in control. Something as intricate as a Lamba Driver can not be used to effectiveness if the user is not applying his abilities effectively. Emotions won't be the answer to the Lamba Driver, but it's not it's weakness either.

I'm not starting anything, just pointing things out. There are sides to everything, nothing ever said that Sousuke wasn't a Whispered, but what said he was? If Mithril was on the search for Whispered, wouldn't testing their personnel be a facility? But I don't know specifically how they test Whispered, and from what I have seen, you need advanced equipment and time. So that probably won't be plausible. Though if Sousuke was a Whispered, it wouldn't really help Gatoh since then it would show that a lot of incredible characters in Full Metal Panic! are Whispered, and I think he would have a better view point as a regular human if he was a super soldier, yet he got that from years of experience and skill. Though we know that Whispers get Whispers in their minds when they mature.

ah, woops, I see now that, in my last post, I didn't point out I was reffering to Takuma, sorry about that, I'll edit straight away...

My bottom line question was, rephrased:

Where is it said, or from what can it be deducted, that Takuma was not born a wispered?
If I missed something like that I'd like to know where I can find it...
Is it just me, or are there way too many talking decapitated heads around these days?
