Alright Mods, you can go ahead and delete this if you deem it inappropiate. It's just a weird thing I may have never noticed but when I was sifting through my UC Gundam stuff I thought about something and realized, "Hey there is stuff in Full Metal Panic that seem similar!!"
When I went back and pulled up Char's Counter attack and watched it I found it somewhat funny that the Lambda Driver has many similarities to the psyco-frame present in most of the Mobile Suits.
In Full Metal Panic being the manifistation of will power and such.
In Gundam being the amplification of NewTYPEs such as Amuro and Char. In which both do similar things and both involve the mind to create physical things. The lambda driver creates shields made up of energy for example, Amuro in CCA makes a shield around A-Aizeru using his fin funnels while amplified by the Psyco-frame.
The Whispered are in a sense the FMP equivalent of NewTYPEs being that they have some psychic abilities. Resonance being one of them, which NewTYPEs could do something similar being that they could communicate with each other and could understand things about their suits that others couldn't.
I know it probably sounds stupid and this thread should just be deleted but I just thought it was funny that there are similarities concerning NewTYPEs from Gundam and Full Metal Panic.

Well, the concept of taking a machine and giving it powers such that it could turn human emotion into raw energy isn't foriegn to anime. If a character can draw on some "ultimate power" but only in especially tense or emotional scenes, it makes for good drama. So it's a pretty common ploy. NewTYPES and Whispered are just the justification for a power that defies scientific logic, without calling it "magic". They basically have people who have access to a magical-like technology that couldn't be rationalized otherwise.
The lambda driver is based on that romantic theme of whoever's got more spirit or willpower, whoever wants it the most, will win. Will somehow overcome technological/strength disadvantages. Will be able to get back up and fight after receiving major damage, and still win. Because they never give up, because they want to be the best, because they have loved ones to protect. The ultimate underdog.
It's rather funny, if you ask me.

Well said Weltall Elite and Circle, pointing out 2 things. If you look at Whispereds, Lambda Driver, and Black Technology, without them the Full Metal Panic! series would be just some mecha show, though with the cool AS.

Actually, the application of the Lambda Driver in the Arbalest reminds me of a super robot anime (or a fighting tournament anime scaled up), which seems rather out of place in the relatively-realistic FMP universe. Most telling, of course, would be Sousuke's application of the driver in the Kowloon fight in ODBD, particularly his "Forged Needle"-esque finisher (a Tenjo Tenge reference, if I got the name right).
Black Tech, on the other hand, merely strikes me as something out of the military genre, especially with all those novels involving "top-secret projects". Nothing extraordinary there.

Well, a lot of these concepts&objects are 'deus ex machinas', so to speak.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deus_ex_machina
Don't be fooled by the original definition, this term is not only used about the ending, but actual items&constructs pressent within the story.
As an example, the most well known&argueably most well executed deus ex machina ever would be 'the force' in Starwars.
It's fairly easy to percieve how Gatoh has constructed them in order to get tools with which to express his story as he wishes to.
The downside is the possible alienation of readers, which has been quite actual for me, but I've chosen to live with it anyway, cause I much enjoy the overall story.
That gundam chooses to utilize similar constructs isn't so odd - the lambda driver is perhaps the most well executed deus ex machina I've had the oppertunity to see in any anime (the evangelions in neon genesis being a close second), so it's not at all strange that other anime have devices and constructs that are extremely similar...

Is it just me, or are there way too many talking decapitated heads around these days?

Thing is, it's been suggested that the Lambda Driver is something still in the works: remember the Venom/Chodarl-M Pilots going, "No way, isn't Mithril's Lambda Driver incomplete?"
This suggests to me that what we've seen of Lambda Driver application is merely scratching the surface... but Black Tech is justifiable.
Also, I wonder how the Lambda Driver would fare vs the AT Field.....

"Can I help you?, "you know this section is.." she broke off her sentence as the man walked towards her and nodded, "I think you can Captain".
Tessa looked down, "I haven't been called Captain in 4 years," Wha..what do you want?"
He gave her a devious grin, "I'm here to make sure you keep your promise."

He'd most likely write her off as 'person of uninterest,' to which that'd pissWild Goose wrote:And unlike Shinji, I doubt he'd stand for abuse from Asuka.

Oh, yeah. *grins* And then she'd try to nail him, and he'd react by entering CQC, and it'd end with Asuka on the floor, staring at the barrel of a Glock 26, and suddenly from behind....HELLFIRE wrote:He'd most likely write her off as 'person of uninterest,' to which that'd pissWild Goose wrote:And unlike Shinji, I doubt he'd stand for abuse from Asuka.

"SOUSUKE!" *THWACK!*
"Chidori-"
"Don't 'Chidori' me, you mindless military otaku! What kind of person calls his girlfriend by her surname!"
"My apologies. Reflex action."

Actually, mangaverse Asuka seems reasonably proficient at unarmed combat, and Sousuke takes enough abuse from Chidori as it is, but let's not get too carried away. And if you're comparing Gundam to FMP, Sousuke's VA has only one thing to say to you:
"This hand of mine burns with the light of my anger! It calls for me to reach out and grasp victory! BAKUNETSU! GOD FINGER!"
*Leonard explodes*
