what if...

...AS would have weapons installed like in mechs in Battletech? Instead of carrying them like giantic infantry they would have stable weapons like missile launchers intalled to them. Would that work with AS?

Not really, they would get too slow making them easier to target...

"Can I help you?, "you know this section is.." she broke off her sentence as the man walked towards her and nodded, "I think you can Captain".
Tessa looked down, "I haven't been called Captain in 4 years," Wha..what do you want?"
He gave her a devious grin, "I'm here to make sure you keep your promise."

Limited range in motion, extra deadweight if damaged...

Then again, we saw some AS mechs carrying fixed guns -- Arbalest's
headmounted Phalanx f'rinstance.

On a good day, a Tomahawk can fly into the door of a two-car garage at the distance of several hundred miles. And that can ruin your whole day.

Sure but how about more powerful weapons? Behemoth had some machine guns mounted to its head but its not special. I could image M-9s carrying mortar in they back or bazooka on they shoulder.

Well they seem to use a strategy of upscaling weapons, So why not ?

...too much like GunCannon?

Technically I don't think there's a reason why mechas in FMP! can't have
weapons like that, but I personally suspect -- at least in the animated version --
it's a conscious style issue not to use stuff above what's needed for melee attacks.

Tactically speaking, is there any benefit to using such weapons? Think
about the logistics of a squad carrying around something like a 81mm mortar
plus associated ammo, then scaling it up to AS size? It's gets to be a MAJOR
headache to your supply chain. Possibly major AS mfrs and military services
worldwide see the high mobility offered by ASs on the battlefield as the offset.

The Lambda Driver works pretty well as a on-board weapon. Then there's the head mounts that HELLFIRE mentioned. And I'm pretty sure it has a small gun located somewhere in it's arm. We saw that when Sousuke through Kaname up in the air and shot down that helicopter in the first series.

The LD sure has offensive capabilities but primarily in close combat.

Well, in any case, I always thought that the appeal of a bipedal humanoid machine was that it would be versatile like a person. In theory anyway. Part of that would be being able to quickly change the weapons it was carrying without adding unnecessary weight.

But since this is an anime, it's all in theory.

I seem to recall fixed weapons on "secksy Mr. Gates'" Codarl in the final episodes of The Second Raid. Some kind of machine cannon. I would have posted screenshots, but my .AVI codec is being a pain in the ass right now, so the image won't show up.

LD is more like defensive equipment instead of weapon. It just creates energy field that can then be used to deflect protectiles back to shooter.

Actually in that part Sousuke just took his AS weapon and used it to shoot down that helicopter before catching Kaname from air.

The LD isn't just a defensive weapon. Gauron used it to destroy the M9's
Sousukes "Metsu Shouryuuken" incinerated Gates.
And when Sousuke used the LD to take down the Behemoth I think he used the LD to give the grenade more penetration power. (been a while must watch again)

As Taurec said, if you notice, the Lambda Driver is used offensively on numerous occasions. I also think you could probably shoot some energy ball or beam at a longer range, since all you have to do is visualize it.

The LD can also enhance the power of the AS's weapons, like when Sousuke blew away every Codarl in the final battle of TSR. Although he could've caught the enemies off guard, the LD probably gave his shotgun slugs the punch needed to penetrate the opposing LD's defenses.
