OMG I have heared about gaisha feet before BUT that is just inhuman. Like her feet were broken to make it harder to flee. Meh culture differances . Time differances.

They do...quite rare...but they do exist...and yes...I have seen one walking down the street in Kyoto.

Ah ah ah. There is one misunderstanding here. I was fooled by it myself.

This is not a geisha. She is just a CHINESE woman who was some kind of forced to wear such shoes.

This... tradition... comes from China and Japanese geishas did not do such thing to their feet.

I've read an article about it - perhaps later when I have more time I'll translate it.

And DUH! People, of course geishas still exist! Have you watched "Kelly Osbourne in Japan"? She went to School of Geishas and even served some people once xD

Yeah, I was gonna say that that woman is Chinese because the Japanese don't practice foot-binding, the Chinese did until the 20th century. Known as "lotus feet", foot-binding was originally practiced among the wealthy and was kind of a status symbol until the lower social classes started doing it. It was even considered, by some, as erotic. But seriously, the feet look like they have been broken in half!

On another note, geisha still do exist, though their numbers are dwindling.

But the super heel shoes are in fact in style in Japan, that I confirmed. Foot binding is one thing, but those beast-of-burden-shoe soled platforms are a hoot.
