When I was looking through my Newtype Preview and Newtype Vol. 1, I noticed certain changes in the dialouge. Pretty much in Vol. 1 they changed a couple of words for censorship:
Preview: "Soouusuke! You're an asshole, you know that?!"
Vol. 1: "Soouusuke! You're such an idiot, you know that?!"
Preview: "Stop saying that creepy shit!"
Vol. 1: "Stop saying that creepy stuff!"
Preview: "You'll pay for this you bit**!"
Vol. 1. "You'll pay for this!"
Preview: "Ow! I'm gonna kill you, bit**!"
Vol. 1: "Ow! I'm gonna kill you for that!"
I think there were more, but I'm typing from what I remember from memory. ^_^''

... what is wrong with swearing? I can swear for minutes on a stretch without repeating myself except for the word "you" and the guy's name.

Hmm, I remember when I got NewType's preview issue with the first chapter, being a little surprised at the translation being unusually vulgar.
I read alot of graphic novels and ...well, just in my experience usually only fan translations (and sometimes bad ones at that) use alot of harsh language- official translations tend to be considerably tame. Generally only the more violent series with the M rating use some of those terms (like BotImmortal). I couldn't imagine FMP in that M rating group.
I do know that, generally, japanese vulgarities are 'tamer' then current english ones- the western standard is looser than the japanese one.
Words that would offend a japanese person, or calling a person something offensive in japan, wouldn't even register as an effective insult in english.
It seems that when a vulgarity is used in a translation, it's sometimes accused as being an interpretation on the translators part- attempting to decide how harsh the language is in japanese and trying to convey a similar tone in english.
Othertimes fans might accuse an offical translation of censorship, because it doesn't use langauge as vulgar as the fan translation they are used to knowing. Or, such as a word like kuso, there is a generally accepted literal translation, but it's used with various intents so using that literal translation doesn't always make an accurate translation.
(ie, a kid in anime might say kuso but you're not likely to see that offically translated as shit)
I don't have my japanese manga accessible, so I don't know what exact terms Kaname used. (most of it was from her)
I didn't read the re-print of ch 1 (I already had) but the changes don't surprise me. NewType isn't exclusively targeting an older crowd- there's nothing on the cover or in it's marketing to suggest there is language in it some might find offensive. And it's always hard to say 'it's definately censorship' since the terms in question don't translate literally.
Maybe the preview version was rushed, and when they re-did it for issue 1, an editor had time to go through and clean it up, bringing the langauge in line with other translated manga.
Right now, until someone can offer a comparasion with what the japanese dialouge said, I can't really tag it as censorship (just IMO). I don't think that any meanings were changed or lost, or that characterizations were changed- scaling the language down that little bit doesn't really change how Kaname comes across.
Now, if Mao's japanese language was very very vulgar, and the translation totally cut out vulgarities, then that would seem more like censorship, since her character is supposed to be portrayed as a tough-as-nails, swearing marine type.
But, anyhow, that's very interesting. NewType USA has been caught altering an image or two (such as erasing cigs out of Haibane REnmei spreads)- but they said those were accidents. Perhaps, Sagara, if you wanted, you could email Newtype and ask them about the changes.
