FMP: Continuing On My Own Discussion *Spoilers*
Moderators: KiLlEr, HELLFIRE, Taurec
yeah and I think we ended up being in agreement ^_^
I'd like to say that we're on a discussion board. It is in that light my comments about 'hating certain parts' should be seen - I don't hate reading those parts. I just...really wish they were in a condition that would grip me better.
With that out of the way, I also don't feel I need to look for a positive way of seeing things as I discuss them - I use these boards to talk, and evaluate, and express some of the impressions I got.. While using them to look for positives is fair and square, I've already read the books, and that experience won't be changed, so I don't really care for that.
As for the whole perspective thing...what I meant when I said the 'readers' perspective, I meant you have to see it from a real-world readers perspective....'is a real world reader able to relate to a character in this situation' and that kind of thing...'would a real world reader have empathy with this'...
This is opposed to the writers perspective:
'Is there any way he could have done this better?, could this have been smoother?'
That's what I really meant to say...looking at a situation from a characters perspective does relate to whether the experience is believable, but when looking at it from the readers perspective you can do this too, only, the 'readers perspective' is at a sort of meta-level..
Sorry if that sounded complicated, I probably overcomplexified it 2 or 3 times there

Is it just me, or are there way too many talking decapitated heads around these days?
I guess I have a slightly different perspective on the stories, so I don't know if my opinion counts. I guess when I look at them, I think more of what parts I really enjoyed translating, or what parts I will really look forward to. The stuff in between is usually a bore to me and I pay little attention to it (I really end up going back and reading it through and find that I didn't know what was happening at the time I did it, as weird as that sounds). So, for me, ODBD was much more fun, as I was interested in most everything that happened in that story. DVMC was more of a drag, b/c I really was extremely interested in the end, with Tessa and Sousuke, and the rest of the stuff, the submarine parts especially, got to me b/c of the technical difficulty and b/c of my lack of interest in that part in the first place (also, the fact that I had to redo about 40 pages of it b/c of a hard drive crash also played into it). The whole time I was doing DVMC, I was really wanting to get to COMO, b/c of all the stuff that happens in it. So for me, I enjoy reading it and thinking, "how can I express this the right way?" or "wow, other people would love to know this"...like I said, it's probably weird. I have this half-reader, half-writer complex, I guess ^^

I don't think any of us really talked about that. I know when I download the stories, I always skip right to the Sousuke and Kaname scenes first. I always can't wait to see what happens next with them.
There are other scenes that kinda slow me down, such as the sub one you mentioned. Though, I admit that once I went back and read through it, it eventually got more interesting. But not nearly as interesting as Sousuke and Kaname doing their thing.

Well, I always read it in the right order...
And sj, I think I get what you're saying...it's only natural that your look on how exciting a scene is, is influenced by how interesting you think it is to translate...it's gotta leave it's mark before the end.
Also, even if your view is slightly different, what you think sure does count...particularly because if you dislike something enough, the rest of us will be left without a steady source of fmp ;-P
Nah, it really does count because the fact that you must spend more time on every scene than the rest of us, so you get to 'feel' it far better than us...even the parts you dislike, those that we would skip during a reread or similar.
I can only imagine how dreadful it'd be if a new novel turned out to be filled with stuff you don't find interesting -
Oh yeah, and I loved the sub scene. I kept trying to time my winamp so 'deeply, quietly' would play as I reached the climax of those scenes...

Fortunately, I've yet to run into that problem yet ^^ I've worked on other stuff I didn't enjoy, but I've always liked fmp. Basically, anything to do with Sousuke keeps my interest, so I guess I won't have any problems there.
I'm really glad other people like the parts I don't like, b/c those are usually the parts that were hard to do (it's always fun translating military words that you don't even know what they mean in English).
Anyway, I like how the relationship between Sousuke and Kaname is progressing. Finally, it seems as if all the pretenses and insecurities of their relationship are being stripped away by the insecurity of what is happening around them. And Kaname is letting down her ever-present guard and letting herself admit to the truth of the entire situation.

"Can I help you?, "you know this section is.." she broke off her sentence as the man walked towards her and nodded, "I think you can Captain".
Tessa looked down, "I haven't been called Captain in 4 years," Wha..what do you want?"
He gave her a devious grin, "I'm here to make sure you keep your promise."

Heh, I bet I would be extremely anxious about the cliffhanger if I hadn't read some of the spoilers, or seen the pictures of the comming stuff...
Btw., wasn't there a picture missing in part 2b ?
I've seen what jae has uploaded, and even tho I should get off my ass and double check, I'm fairly confident there's at least one picture which pertains to this section of writing...
I mean...it's not that big a deal but, if it's true, then a new version with the picture included should perhaps be made sometime in the future...I want to have a version with all the pictures I can show to my grandkids when I'm old and grey ^_^
Heck sometime down the line I might even consider getting 'em printed...there's a rapidly growing market for small-scale prop production due to the more and more unique subcultures existing on the internet, and it likely wouldn't be too expensive to do something completely unique like that...

In the novel, there is no picture in that part. However, you may have been looking at Jae's scans of the magazine, which often includes pictures that are not in the book. Some pictures are even redone. Just like with DVMC, COMO has a gallery of unused pictures at the end of the book that will be scanned in.

Finished COMO 2b, and I must say, things are looking down for Mithril and Sousuke.
One thing that didn't feel apparent in the series and earlier novels is this series of desparation. In a way, Mithril has pretty much been the top dog, biggest kid on the block, and even though they've had some problems, they've always managed to coe out on top. They're the best in the world.
And then, on one day, all of that changes. Mithril's entire infrastructure is attack, their leadership killed off, and i have a feeling that the TDD-1 and crew will probably be the only survivors. And then, let's not forget what's happening with Sousuke and Kaname. So close, and yet so far - Geybo 9 swooping in and saving them before taking a missile and crashing - defeat snatched from the jaws of victory.
And now their friends at Jindai are now at risk...
Somehow, I don't see Sousuke and Kaname ever coming back to Japan. EVER.

New novel chapter's been released. Like always, I skipped ahead and read the scene with Sousuke and Kaname. I'll have to go back and read the other part later.
Kaname is totally losing her mind. And we're seeing a side of her we've never seen before. And it's not a good side.

Personally, I would have liked that."If this were a cheap novel, this would probably be the emotional kiss scene..."
Ow. Absolutely brutal, this one, and so OOC - yet expected. From Tessa's [ecs]threat to execute anyone who flees[/ecs] to Sousuke [ecs]actually speaking more than one line ( )[/ecs], it's a marker for how much their worlds have changed in the space of one novel. And I can so see Tessa shooting Leonard now...
Nice to see that my previous speculation about Tessa's words - "Just say it. Who am I? What's my post and rank?" - turned out to be false. Unfortunately, it seems that Kaname is the one falling under the influence, if you will.
And out of curiosity, is this the first time they've mentioned Clouzot's origins definitively? (There was some speculation in ODBD that he was Canadian...)
