I think how well things scale is dependant on the source material--the de Danaan is very detailed and 3D... it would lose the details when blown up, or would turn pixelated and ugly.
On the other hand, shows that are less "detailed" like Chrno Crusade could blow up better. The colors tend to be more solid, and the atmosphere tends to be foggy.
I think it also depends on the one doing the image editing--I know it wouldn't have looked good if I did the editting work since I barely know how to get around in Photoshop. My boyfriend, being a computer graphics student, knows how to get Photoshop to work with him, not against him, unlike me.
But this is getting off topic, methinks. But here's an idea... "cut" the de Danaan out of a shot, don't enlarge it (there should be plenty of full frame shots of it), put it on top of a solid background (or play with Photoshop...), and maybe add a cut out shot of Tessa and anyone else that strikes your fancy.
