There's the BM-22, still in Red Army service.

Ramjet is a special engine. It sopposedly allows one to reach hyper-sonic speeds if it's powerful enough. I'll dig up all the tech specs later.

Scratch that. I meant, 'clue me in on the photo.' A ramjet, if I remember
correctly is an engine that has no moving parts, compresses air via a
narrow air inlet / throat, yet is very efficient in the
supersonic / hypersonic speed regimes. The MiG-25 & SR-71 used
turbojets, but their engines operate more like ramjets @ speed.

That is correct. The SR-71, when it needs to reach full speed, uses a ramjet to hit Mach 3+. Dunno about the MiG-25 though.

Jupz

the SR71 uses not a True RamJet .. You could say it's an Turbo"ramjet"

In a turboramjet engine a turbojet with afterburner is used to get to minimum ramjet speed and altitude.
The incoming air is then partially or completely bypassed around the turbine portion and ducted into the afterburner, only then it functions as a true ramjet. it's those cones i say ...

the Mig-25 .. just uses a insane enormous Turbojet .. <grin> ..

Fyi .. that pic was of the Leduc 022 France '56

You know the Russians. They are REAL believers in the "Bigger is Better" philosophy. Overkill is abit of a tradition with them (even during the industrial age. Ever seen a 32 pounder Licorne?). Afterall, they built the AN-225.

@Katyusha
Actually, the US has it's share of 'bigger is better' grandiose dreams.
If you read Blind Man's Bluff, the story on the sunken Golf, they
originally wanted to develop minisubs to retrieve her, but ended up
with the monstrosity that is the Glomar Explorer; how many times has
she been used? Once?
And you have to give the Sovs credit for thinking unconventionally.
How many Sov weapons systems have no direct Western equivalent?

@Taurec
I'm sure the MiG-25 uses the turbo-ramjet as well. One book I have
describes the engine as having a single shaft carrying 5 compressor
stages driven by a single turbine, which at speeds above Mach 2, the
intake adds to the compression, making it operate like a ramjet.

True, Glomar Explorer *IS* one helluva monster, but at least they didn't bother building a plane that could carry over 1 million pounds of cargo.

No the C-5A/B is named the Galaxy. The Glomar Explorer is a ship. I think its purpose has to do with something with underwater salvage, right?

BTW the Su-35, S-37 and Su-37 have no counterparts in the West. Just like to point that out.
To each his own.
