OMG! THE DUB! THE DUB!!!!

Post by blackrose »

In the Newtype America magazine I picked up last night, they had Episode one of the ADV north american release included on DVD. I HAVE NOW HEARD THE ENGLISH VOICES OF FMP!!!!

First impressions:

Chris Patton does NOT screw up his first lines. Which is great. We (I watched it with Melodrama) got so excited just hearing "Sagara. Sousuke Sagara."

Kurz sounds a bit younger in English, but his VA really gets into his role and with barely any adjustment to the sound of his voice (on my part), I think he does just fine. Melissa's voice is a tiny bit more feminine than the Japanese, and again, a little younger sounding, but I think it works. I really like both hers and Kurz's voices.

Teacher's voice is fine. Kiyoko's voice is fine. Nothing grating. Everyone seems to really know their character's parts.

The Major could really be Sean Connery.... Minus the English accent.

KANAME. KANAME is perfect. I like her voice better in English than the Japanese. Gone are those harsh, annoying, forced laughs from the Japanese translation. When Kiyoko accuses Kaname of being interested in Sousuke, she laughs the way she should, but it's not got that WOO-AH sound at the beginning that just used to make me cringe.

I was soooooo happy to hear her voice because I was really afraid it would grate. Whomever they got, and I forgot to watch the credits because I had to call Stella and re-run parts with the phone next to my speaker, did just a stellar job. *dances*

Back to Chris Patton. I totally respect him as someone who's very dedicated to his roles, and don't get me wrong, he does a fine job. It's just that there are times when he has too much personality. Sousuke with vocal inflection is tough to get used to. The beginning was perfect. The classroom scene was excellent. I'm pretty sure that just like every 1st episode I've seen, it just takes a little bit to get used to their roles. But a conversational Sousuke during the scene with the Major and when they're on the helicopter to leave, just.... Well, those scenes don't work as well.

I DO have every confidence that he'll be fine the further along we go. Like I said, the classroom scene was perfect.

:D

So, there ya go. Rose's report during amateur hour at the anime review....

I wonder how many episodes we'll get on Vol. 1... And dammit, is it June 10th yet? *sobs*

Rose

"Can I help you?, "you know this section is.." she broke off her sentence as the man walked towards her and nodded, "I think you can Captain".
Tessa looked down, "I haven't been called Captain in 4 years," Wha..what do you want?"
He gave her a devious grin, "I'm here to make sure you keep your promise."

Does Kalinin have a ruskiye accent then?
Remember kids, trying to start Armageddon is dangerous. Do not try it at home.

[14:57] Silver Lynxy: Ack. You couldn't see that?
[14:57] Katyusha [Love Through Superior Firepower]: Nope, cant see a thing.
[14:57] Katyusha [Love Through Superior Firepower]: Not using MSN remember?
[14:57] Silver Lynxy: Oh right. You're one of those Trillian people, aren't you?
[14:58] Katyusha [Love Through Superior Firepower]: trillian people? =.= What are we, an ethnicity now?
[15:00] Silver Lynxy: Yes. An evil race.

Which month's issue was that? June?

BTW, vol 1 will have 4 episodes.
(hopefully the series will be a 4 ep/6 vols release)

Interesting report!
The audience applauded, even though it was not clear what Bush meant.

OOoooooh, I WANT to hear some samples!
Wish they'd sweeten the deal a bit and go for like
6eps / disc kinda thing, but that's just me...

...and I'm curious how they dubbed that scene in
ep 2? where Sagara saves Chidori from the truck,
but leaves his hand 'in the cookie jar'... :-D

Thnx for the intelligence report there, blackrose :)

I don't think Tessa was in ep 1 at all. Doesn't she make her first appearance in ep 2?

Yep. Tessa wasn't around until ep2 of the series. Let's hope they kept the thing in verbatim.

Okay, so now I have vol 1. Bless ADV being in TEXAS and bringing FMP in the box to Akon last weekend. *glomps ADV, Chris Patton, and Greg Ayers* <-- Sousuke and Shinji signed my pencil board. They're funny funny guys. ^___^

@Tau - Tadaima! i'm home. The CBB dub is good, too. I think that you may find the FMP dub tolerable as well. My husband is unimpressed with Tessa's voice (he apparently thinks she's hot, too - what IS it with guys and Tessa????) but other than that, he likes the rest of them.

@Kat - No, he doesn't have a Ruskiye accent. He's not really got much of any accent. It's a very proper sounding American voice. In other words, very intelligent, he annunciates very well. But doesn't quite make British. I like his voice, and hubby's remark last night was: His voice is very well chosen.

@Jae - Yes! June's issue. Sorry about that. I didn't realize it wasn't out everywhere at the time. Suncoast had it. And yeah, vol 1 leaves off at that horrible cliffhanger. -___-

@Gabb - I didn't have an answer to that until recently. It's very feminine sounding, and I like it, but my husband says it makes her "not as hot" because it is nowhere near as high-pitched as the Japanese. My personal opinion is that it suits her character just fine, but I'm sure that Tessa fans will be disappointed. :(

@Hellfire - Ep 2 is hysterical. My personal favorite is one of Kaname's friends referring to the trash assignment as Sousuke getting assigned to be "TRASH BITCH". I about DIED when I heard that. ROFLMAO!!!! As for the cookie jar scene... *giggles* ADV has done a really really good job of translating almost verbatim what was on the fansub copies I had originally. Certain things have become more clear, but there's no lines that have been altered from their original meaning. You'll like it. :)

@Felix - I know how you feel. I keep finding reasons that I just HAVE to buy the damn thing despite the fact that I keep telling myself "I don't need a subscription." I think I just need a subscription. O.o

Rose

OH! And I almost forgot....

I think Shinji's voice comes across just fine, and for Kat - Gauron (new spelling, remember) sounds like Jack Nicholson.

So, there ya go.

My personal opinion is that ADV has done a REALLY REALLY good job of casting and translation. But I happen to like watching dubbed anime (when it's done well). My original perception of Chris Patton's version of Sousuke... He did settle into the role by the end of ep. 1, and does a very good job in ep 2-4 of vol 1.

I asked Chris Patton if he had recorded the line (since he said they're still dubbing the series) "I'm not an amateur, I'm a specialist", yet. And he grinned at me and said "Oh yes." *lol*

So, there's still things to look forward to....

*goes off giggling about "Trash Bitch", and Gauron's "Thank you for flying with us."*

Rose

I was really displeased with Newtype USA's release of the June issue. All the previous issues would appear around Pittsburgh mid month before the issue's month. So I started looking around places on May 15th for the June issue. Nothing. *odd* When I was in Connecticut May 17-18, nobody had it. May 21st rolls around and STILL not a single store in the Pittsburgh area had the June Issue. Fortunately some of the dealers at Animazment had it and it seems it finally hit Pittsburgh while I was gone.

I haven't had the chance to watch the sampler disc, but I was more interested in the article on Tekkoshocon than FMP.

Everything sounds very interesting.

Now I'm going to post an off-topic newtype rant ;)
We still had may issue in stores until last week? (I think)
But, I have a subscription and may never showed up. I had to buy it :x
(apparently Im not the only one for whom may didn't show. In theory they are supposed to send a new one, but...ha)

Now june is in stores...but Im still waiting for mine to come in the mail.
If it's not here by the end of this week, I'm going to be quite throughly annoyed. Custom. serv. says 'oh, it will get there', but it's not like they really know. They need to work on their sub. distro still. So if you're still buying it, at least you have control over when you get it :wall:

// wishes for a site that would host quick wav samples of the voices :-D

I'd LOVE to hear the part Chidori blows up and says 'Saa..gaa..ra.. you
damned pervert!!' I swore that would be the hardest part for them
to dub over!!
