Lambda driver users
I have a theory that an AS with the lambda driver system needs a special pilot to use those capabilities. I don't mean one properly trained, either.
My main piece of evidence is from episode 9. When Seina finds Kalinin, she says something along the lines of needing Takuma to be able to move that huge AS. If any pilot could do it, why not do it herself? Also, Tessa was called in to see if Takuma had initiated the lambda driver. Hmm... I wonder if that implies some long term effect of using the lamda driver.
Does that mean the lambda driver pilots are whispered, or are carriers of the gene? I think I read on here somewhere Tessa's brother is also whispered, leading me to believe it might be genetic.
Incidentally, I love how Kaname taught Sousuke how to use the lambda driver by imagining what would happen to her if the pilot was defeated by Gauron. I was laughing so hard at that.

Hello Samantha, and welcome to this forum.
i don't think there is a special gene needed that does the magic. for operating a LD..
It's a mental thing ... because of the mental stress Takuma went a bit gaga. (ne? ne? ne?)
Since there is almost no information available about the LD or other Black Tech .. it's all guess work.
That the whispered have their knowledge from genes, would be plausibel.
anyone who has more info .. correct me if i'm wrong ... it's late here ya know..
Damn i'm getting hungry

"Can I help you?, "you know this section is.." she broke off her sentence as the man walked towards her and nodded, "I think you can Captain".
Tessa looked down, "I haven't been called Captain in 4 years," Wha..what do you want?"
He gave her a devious grin, "I'm here to make sure you keep your promise."

It's hard to know exactly what's going on the with the LD system.
But, yes, it's a fundamental part of the story that Sousuke is the only one who can effectivly use the ARX, because he was the first to initalize it.
They really don't get into that in the anime, but it's an important part of a plot beyond what was in the anime.
It appears that to use an LD system, it only requires a pilot, which anybody could be. (or at least to use Mithril's LD set-up, I have no idea if that holds true for all LD systems).
To create the LD system requires a Whispered.
For Takuma- it seems likely that he was needed to move Bohemoth because he had probably already been the one to initalize the system. He was the only one who could use it, and him dying woulda shot their plans to terrorize Japan.
Ah, which is now the question I have that I don't know the answer to-
If Weber or someone other than Sousuke tried to pilot the ARX, without initilizing the LD system, could they? Is it entirely locked out for all other pilots, or is it just the LD system that is locked out?
I hadn't wondered that before.
Oh, and another question...if they were to rip out the AI and LD system out of an initalized AS, could they replace it with a new system, to initalize it to a new pilot? I would assume so, but perhaps it's time-consuming and cost-prohibitive, in order to preserve that plot story LOL
As for Whispered being genetic, it appears probable. If it isn't, then the chance that both Tessa and her bro were Whispered is very very very tiny. (and yes, he is)
Kaname has a sister. I personally don't know if she's also Whispered, perhaps someone else knows, or perhaps info about that hasn't been revealed.
So Whispered probably is genetic, I don't know if it's been revealed to be or not, as a fact. I also have no idea what the rules for it turning up is-
ie, if one person is Wh, is the sibling's chance 100% for Wh also, or 50% ...or what.
It's all interesting IMO

If I remember my genetics right, you have a dominant (W) trait, and a
recessive (w) trait. Depending on the pairings of the genes in both
parents (WW, Ww, or ww), you'd get:
WW x WW = all Whispered-dominant
WW x Ww = all Whispered-dominant
WW x ww = all Whispered-dominant
Ww x WW = all Whispered-dominant
Ww x Ww = 3x Whispered-dominant, 1x Whispered-recessive
Ww x ww = 2x Whispered-dominant, 2x Whispered-recessive
ww x WW = all Whispered-dominant
ww x Ww = 2x Whispered-dominant, 2x Whispered-recessive
ww x ww = all Whispered-recessive
*assumes 4 children

I haven't touched this stuff since High School Bio, so I'm just going
off the top of my head here. Thx for pointing out that mistake, Samantha.

Well, in the case of the Arbalest, you'd think "R" would lock out anyone besides Sagara, just as a pure security procedure.
That said, I'd think when Kalinin lauched the ARX-7 the 1st time, he'd have programed Sagara AND Webber's data into it. After all, there was no telling from Sousuke's fire message that who was more mobile at the time. Imagine how the series turned out if Kruz jumped in instead.... Lambda powered sniper shots ahoy!!
The Behemoth had a fundamental difference from the Arbalest and the Venom, that it needs the LD active at all times for structual integrity, whereas Sousuke and Gauln just use the drive "on demand". The mental thought process involved probably is so unique that only its designer/maker Takumu, can understand it.

It could be all Kalinin had to do was give R the login data for Sousuke and Kurtz, since the condition of the team was unknown, and it had not been initialized. Or he could have simply input the user settings each pilot had on file for use with their regular AS.That said, I'd think when Kalinin lauched the ARX-7 the 1st time, he'd have programed Sagara AND Webber's data into it. So either the lambda driver's "settings" are hardwired in once the pilot uses it, or perhaps it would just be a heck of a lot less effective if Kurtz or Melissa used it instead of Sousuke without purging his settings. Also, if Sousuke were unable to pilot the ARX-7, due to injury, death or some other reason, it would be a big multimillion dollar paperweight if he was the only person able to use it. Maybe one of their eventual goals is to be able to store the initialized user "settings" of several pilots in one AS.
As to the Venom and the topknot AS (Gauron's original LD AS), in the Winds in the Homeland arc, didn't Sousuke's childhood mentor use the Venom, including the lambda driver capabilities? If the one pilot, one AS theory is true, then Gauron could not have used the Venom later without ripping out the LD and totally replacing it. (Who knows, maybe he did. Wouldn't put it past the SOB.) Perhaps wherever Gauron got his tech from is further along in LD research than Mithril?
Samantha
I forgot the extact model for Zaido's (Sousuke's childhood comrade) AS, but it didn't have a LD, the only thing special about it was the large gatling gun. The Venom was a completely different AS that appeared in the end of the anime.
Also, Mithril's AS technology was more advanced than the group Gauln works for, since the ARX-7 never seemed to have the overheating problems that Gauln had until the Venom. After all, Mithral had the willing cooperation of at least serveral active "whispered" individuals, whereas Gauln's group used forced abduction and extraction of dormant "whispered".

Who knows if the ARX7 would overheat or not .. i mean Gauron is using the LD more often and for longer periods.
While Sousuke manages to have a few outbursts so now and then.
the Behemoth was big enough to have it's own cooling plant, wasn't it also it's weakpoint ? .. beh can't remember.
i think for pilot adjustments these mechs kinda could work like the ones in Pat Labor .. those robots also adjust to it's pilots and it would have been costly to reprogram them.

To me it seems that Sousuke doesn't want to use the LD unless he has to ('I'm a simple soldier who uses simple wepons' or something to that effect). Otherwise he would have used it at least defensivly against Zaido.
As for Programming by Kalinin, I don't think Kalinin intended for Sousuke or Kurtz to use the LD. Neither of them knew anything about the LD and Sousuke found it quite by accident. Judging from Kalinin's reaction when Sousuke asked about it, it seemed that he was afraid that Sousuke would discover it.
At that point where Kalinin made the decision to send out Arbalest, he didn't know if they all were alive. We can make the argument that once they seen the message, it reinforced his decision. But for him to make an assumption that Sousuke (or Kurtz) would find the LD and figure out how to use it with or without Kaname's help would be out of the question for a seasoned verteran like Kalinin. In that case, he would have made a mention of it in his message to Sousuke no matter how little time they had to launch it.
Also, there may have been a message to Kurtz which we don't know about. IMHO, Kalinin thought that Sousuke would be the one who would link up with Arbalest. Kalinin has a high regard about him, much higher than Kurtz (remember, he did crack a joke at an important briefing ) and he knows that Sousuke is a survivor having been his enemy for a time and then his friend.
All this is if we take things at face value, but after writing this, I also realized that Kalinin may have, in the back of his mind, hoped that
Sousuke would find the LD. It would match his character to do so. (Keeping things by the book to his subordinates, but lobbying for their aid to his superiors because he does truly care about them).

A bit of an epiphany
About Kalinin being surprised that Sousuke found out about and used the lambda driver, I don't think so. If Sousuke wasn't to use it, why did they send out their top secret experimental AS, when an M9 would have done just as well? Kalinin would not have done that, not unless he expected Sousuke to utilize the LD unconciously, or for Kaname to come to the rescue like she did.
Admittedly, it was stupid for him not to leave directions on its use, either in the initial message, or in R's databanks. In the initial message would have been better, having it delete immediately after playing, a la Inspector Gadget. If Kaname hadn't come through like she did, Kalinin wasted the ARX-7 and possibly have let it fall into enemy hands.
