Manga source, probable novel source

Post by PookaKitten »

In checking out the comprensive stores listed on Anipike, I found a bookstore in Boston (near Harvard Square) that specializes in imported Japanese books. Lo and behold, they have all the manga volumes, for $12.60 each, plus shipping. Is this a good price?

I also emailed them, asking about the availability of the novels, and estimated pricing, if possible. I'll let you guys know what the answer is. *Eventual goal is to be able to read them myself*

The address is http://www.sasugabooks.com/ if anyone's interested.

It's been awhile since I have done any business with Sasuga, mostly because their prices and shipping costs are high.

Almost $13 for each manga volume is a bit pricy. www.animaxis.com lists them as having a 900yen price, and they are currently charging $7.60USD, much closer to the conversion price.

Personally, I'm always willing to grant some overcharge to a domestic merchant (vs a japanese one) because they do have higher import and possibly customs fees, but I don't know if that translates out to $4+ per book. Then tack on their high shipping.

The people who run it are mostly nice, but I can order from www.amazon.co.jp for cheaper prices, and order in bulk, plus DVDs and CDs, and shipping is pretty comparable.

For the novels- pacing lives near Sasuga and was going to check out ordering the novels from them. But she hasn't been around in quite awhile so I don't know how that turned out.

BTW, ADV will be releasing the english language FMP manga- beginning in early Sept. Too bad we don't yet know what the time between volume releases will be like :(
The audience applauded, even though it was not clear what Bush meant.

Jae,

I'm interested in the Japanese version of the manga because I'm studying Japanese, and want to eventually become fluent enough, in reading it at least, not to need an outside translation.

I've found that in watching anime I've learned the English translation of some kanji from context, such as 第, which is a counter, so when combined with 一 to form 第一, or "daiichi", meaning "number 1," or how I interpreted it from Ai Yori Aoshi, Episode 1. I have also learned some spoken Japanese phrases that if I heard them, I would understand, though I cannot conciously recall them to use them in conversation. Got to love how the human mind works.

Learning kanji that way from a source I enjoy, such as the FMP! manga, is a good way to improve my recognition of kanji, even if it is only the English translation and compound meanings, and not the spoken readings. I want to have copies of the manga and novels now, so that I have them when I can read them and not have to worry about them being out of print.

I also have a friend that, at least the last time I knew, which was admittedly several years ago, lived near Boston and went there on a regular basis. When I worked for 6 months in MA, I went with her and some other friends to Boston several times. This was before I was introduced to anime, or around the time I was. It's taken me several years to fall in love with the artform. I can see if I can get in touch with her again and see if she's still in the area. Actually, she's the one to blame for actually introducing me to anime--she visited us at school and brought the first Kenshin OVA (how he became Kenshin for his deeds during the Revolution), and had the group of us go to the local independant movie theater to watch the dub of Mononoke Hime. :)

*smacks head* Why am I going nuts to find a source for the Japanese originals? I can ask my cousin to look in NYC (he lives there), or to get them next time he goes to Japan (which is somewhat regularly, I think). I can then just pay him for the books.

Boy do I feel oblivious.

Heh. I'm pretty sure the Kinokuniya by Rockfeller Center should have them, and they charge approx yen@currency rate so prolly your cheapest bet:)

But even cheaper, if the Book Off used japanese bookstore is still in operation, maybe he could find some good, used copies? I found quite a bit of old and recent manga in that store :)

6 volumes so far, but ongoing.

I think I saw v2 set for Nov., a 2-3 month between if that's right.
But ADV's just starting in manga. Could speed up, but then we'd still be waiting on the japanese releases :)
(which are several months apart)
