Yes OT .. but i had to post the following

don't care how many anime tapes you've watched, how many Japanese girlfriends you've had, or books you've read, You don't know Japanese. Not only that, majoring in the godforsaken language is NOT fun or even remotely sensible. Iraqi war prisoners are often forced to major in Japanese. The term "Holocaust" comes from the Latin roots "Holi" and "Causm", meaning "to major in Japanese". You get the idea.

"Can I help you?, "you know this section is.." she broke off her sentence as the man walked towards her and nodded, "I think you can Captain".
Tessa looked down, "I haven't been called Captain in 4 years," Wha..what do you want?"
He gave her a devious grin, "I'm here to make sure you keep your promise."

Tessa is actually a Major, or so the fansub I was watching translated. In the episode... Run, Running Ran (the episode after the one where Tessa ends up in Sagara's apartment with that... kid, I forget his name). Anyway, in that episode, when Tessa is fumbling over her words on purpose, she says she's a captain of an assault submarine and a major.

Captain in the dictionary means "One who commands, leads, or guides others, especially:
The officer in command of a ship, an aircraft, or a spacecraft."

So according to the translation I saw, she's a Major.

However... I was looking at some sites which compared military ranks from American Navy, Army, Marine Corps and Air Force.

Someone said that Tessa was a Colonel in the manga. She probably is in the anime too, assuming that they're using the army rank system, Captain is below Lieutenant Colonel, and Colon is is above Lieutenant Colonel.

I think I remember vaguely somewhere that Kalinin was a Lieutenant something, maybe Colonel.

I don't know how reliable www.full-metal-panic.com is... :-o but on Tessa's data sheet it says "Rank: Colonel, Naval Captain of TDD-1"

Then it refers to Kalinin as "Name: Lt.Cmdr. Andrey Kalinin"

And Mardukas: "Name: Cmdr. Richard Mardukas"

makes more sense

*** anyway i can't believe we're arguing about this ^v^ ***

full-metal-panic.com is probably the closest we'll ever get to an 'official' FMP site, given that it's sponsored by ADV

I'm 100% sure that the ranks indicated by ADV are all correct pertaining to the personnel of Mithril. All of the ranks of the characters are understandable. Tessa is a colonel as in a rank, but she is the captain of the Tuatha de Danaan. That could mean she is also a captain, which I think is impossible in the military, or that it simply means that she is the captain of the Tuatha de Danaan. When someone is captain on a ship, regardless of rank, the person is called captain because that person is the commander of the vessel. But, if you look at the list of ranks, like said before by others, the rank of colonel in the other fields of military such as the army, marines, and air force, is the same position as a captain in rank in the navy.
Commander Mardukas is of one rank higher as in the navy rankings then Lieutenant commander Kalinin, also of navy ranking. So you could say that the order of higher ranks is from Tessa, Mardukas, and then Kalinin. Remember, Kalinin might have been an officer in the Spetsnaz, but Mardukas was one known as the [ecs]"Duke"[/ecs], and so was captain of his own submarine I think even in the Falklands War. You can read more of it in Boku-tachi's scanlation of The Dancing Very Merry Christmas. So, in that sense, Mardukas surpasses Kalinin in naval tactician, knowledge, and experience by a very large gap. Also, Marduka's the one who takes charge of the Tuatha de Danaan when the captain, Tessa, is away.

What I don't get is why some sites say that Melissa is of one rank higher than Kurz and Sousuke, when she is a Sergeant Major, and they are Sergeants. She would be of 5 ranks above both of them.

Seargent major means that you're a 'big' seargent, not that you're a 'small' major...

Furthermore, you're correct, you're captain of a navy vessel if you're in command of it, nomatter what your rank.

That translaters often mess this up is because they don't research it properly...

AEmer, what do you mean by the sergeant thing? I think I know what you mean, but them referring to Melissa as a Sergeant major is because of her actual rank.

In the (Imperial)Japanese army a Sergeant had three bars and two stars and a Sergeant-Major three bars and three stars
It's only one rank higher.

Gunso => Sergeant.
Socho=> Sergeant-Major.

[EDIT]
Now I stumbled over some exta info about the more modern hierarchy
Seemingly for Japan it's now :

Sergeant
Sergeant First Class
Master Sergeant
Sergeant Major

But I assume they used the more popular older command stucture ... need a screenshot of Mao's insignia to be sure.
[/EDIT]

So if you have been reading Clancy you would get the US ranks :

- Sergeant.
Staff Sergeant
Sergeant First Class
Master Sergeant
First Sergeant
- Sergeant Major

(Dammit .. I'm sure we all agree Drill Sergeant is above General)*twitch*

And Tessa is not a Major (Shosa)

On the left is the Japanese army rank, followed by its equivalent in the U.S. Army and Marine Corps and then by its U.S. Navy equivalent.
The JAAF made no distinction between air crew and ground personnel, at least for period 1941-1944 ..

So we get Taisa => Colonel / Captain

ah, heheh, it seems there are far more ranks in the american military than I was aware of - I thought it was atleast somewhat comparable with the ranks I know of, but no :-P

Atleast it's comparable with the japanese military though heheh...

...i've yet to come up with a comparison chart listing the worldwide rankings,
but since many modern militaries model themselves on the US style...

Lol! I love that site XD Yes very OT but...don't scare the poor kid! Japanese isn't that bad though...you always get the major otakus who learn it to read DragonBall Z and have no interest in the culture and then just sit there and ask the sensei stupid things like "SENSEI CAN YOU BREAK DOWN KAMEHAMEHA AND TELL US WHAT IT MEANS?"

But if you got a genuine love for Japanese culture and all that and are really interested, then I suggest giving it a try :D

Now on topic...

I have no idea about the military but I'd assume the two are the same. As for someone's comment on it being a paramilitary force, I'd have to agree with that. I mean, just for the fact that they are their own organization that doesn't belong to a specific country. So, I dunno just that fact would make it seem hard to really put them up as an actual army...I'm not making any sense..
