Can I cop out and say I like everyone?
I mean, really, I do.

Besides the obvious, gaulun is fun to watch (and fun to hate)
I didn't care for Kurtz at first, but he's lot better than he initally looks like.

This is the first series where I liked pretty much every single character.
Even Mizuki- who, again, is fun to watch, amusingly bitchy and vunerable at the same time.

Okay, I don't like that guy (her former bf) but he doesn't count.
And, well, now that I think about it, Shinji's a little bland, but he's very devoted to his passions!

Okay, I'll stop

why is tessa so popular?

not that i have anything against her, but i like kaname much more

tessa is too...girly (and pale) though she is pretty. kaname is my fav! i guess i like girls who are rough and tough, hehe. sousuke is also a fav, no doubt about that

You should come to my LiveJournal community, everyone there seems to hate poor Tessa-chan. XD I like her though because... *thinks* well, she's really pretty, she's really sweet, she's got an adorable voice, she actually *knows* what she wants (Sousuke-wise XD), she's an absolute GENIUS and dammit, she's the head of a great big powerful submarine and she's only 16! I should be so lucky, ne?

Everybody has a different preference. I don't really care for Tessa because I think she is too shy and weak, but some people like that. This kinda reminds me of some other characters.

Rei (evangelion) and Ruri (nadesico) are exceptionally popular. There are images of them everywhere, but I dislike both of those characters. Similar to the reason I don't like Tessa. Ruri isn't helpless but I still find her annoying. Anyway....

Well everybody has their own favs.. i found both Tessa and Kaname have their good and bad points..

I think this is really true. And I think fans who do have a prefrence are actually pretty evenly split, who you find depends on where you look.
I think, because Kaname is as main a character as Sousuke, and Tessa is more supportive (and gets less screen+story time) Tessa fans may feel more like they need to give her props.

Personally I think Tessa is really pretty and has a lot of good traits (like compassion for the enemy), but one thing I like about her most is that they didn't make her perfect. I don't like how she's manipulative and I think her feelings for Sousuke rely on the fact she only sees the best of him, but I do like her alot

She's as complex as the 2 main chars.

I personally prefer Kaname though. She has her faults too, but to some degree I share them so I don't know if I could dislike her for them

And like mishieru I lean to the tougher, independant types, or the types who don't 'play along'.

But that's just me

Why am I not surprised?

I thought Gaulun was gonna suck as a bad guy at first- to easy to hate.
But....that's his purpose. No neo-villain-type here- he's throughly unredeemable. Demented, too. Ugly, too. (reaallly ugly, too)

But maybe he's not such a bad guy- after all he *does* give such cheerful greetings to his enemies, you'd think he wanted them to smile before he blasts them away.

Kurtz..... defently Kurtz especialy the part in where Mao tells about how she met them. That he tells her that he isn't good in piloting and shooting but if only she would hold him in her arms and tries to jump her and gets his ass kicked. I couldn't stop laughing.
