Man... things got so busy today...
I make electronica mixes once in a while, and in June, one of mine started airing regularly on an Internet radio station. And just today I've been flooded with requests to send out the mix (I don't have an FTP server to host it or anything). And now I gotta do this Hamlet stuff, this Journalism stuff... Damn.
Oh well, Friday I don't go to school so I can have some free time, hopefully most of that will be writing time. Cya.

Variable Geometry: Part 3
Variable Geometry: Part 3

Saturday, September 7th. 2002 (The Following Day)
Lotus Apartment Complex
Ota-ku, Tokyo-to
She had been awake since 5 am, and she did not wish to return to the one place where bad dreams could haunt her. She had seen Sousuke die in her mind. Was this a premonition? Kaname Chidori hoped with all of her being that it wasn't the case. 'I wonder what he's doing right now?'
That's all a lovesick girl could ever think about. That's what she called it anyway.
Living Quarters, Aquila Mithril Air Force Compound
Aquileia, Aquila Islands Chain
The fiery haired lieutenant had managed to sleep somewhat peacefully through the previous night. The rooms the enlisted ranks had been given were small, yet not cramped, no where near cramped. Many had said they preferred this to barracks. Alundres was fully dressed in her uniform: a grey-brown buttoned coat over a white dress shirt, and a pair of matching pants. She preferred the pants to the short skirt; she never gave Kayashi any reasons when he had asked why. 'Kayashi... why did I blow up like that?' she asked herself genuinely. She glanced at the blue symbols displayed on her alarm clock sitting just to her left. 'I should go see him,' Alundres decided.
Hopping from her bed with a new resolve, she exited her room and travelled down the hall. Kayashi's room was not far from her own, perhaps a dozen doors left from hers. Upon reaching it, the pilot paused, 'Is this a good idea?'
Shaking away her doubts, she rapped three times on the door, then awaited a response. She allowed herself to toss some of her sanguine hair behind her before the door opened, 'If it opened.'
It turned out that the door did open, after several moments of delay. There he was, not looking prim and proper like a good lieutenant. His face, mainly his eyes suggested that he had been deprived of some sleep. His hair was perpetually dishevelled, the dark blue strands in chaotic tangles. He wore a not-so-clean grey t-shirt and a wrinkled pair of black chords. His eyes lethargically registered just who was standing before him. It was Lieutenant Lorraine Alundres, ace pilot, and and an ace in the sack... or so he had heard through innocent overhearings of conversations in the mess hall. Kenji Kayashi genuinely doubted those claims... the lieutenant was far from promiscuous, and she was intelligent enough to be aware of what everyone thought of her. That's what he thought anyway, and he felt himself being drawn into those soothing emerald pools, almost. "Ken... I'm here to apologize for what happened yesterday at supper... I should not have let myself get so worked up on your... departure," she had said.
'Ken? Right... she started calling me that ever since last Christmas,' he recalled, feeling as if he was losing his grip on important memories. He only nodded in response, assuming that would get the message across. "So... Why did you get so upset in the first place? My new assignment is only temporary and there is minimal danger involved" he assured in a tired tone, confirming Alundres' suspicions.
She clearly did not want to explain her action to him, as she didn't know herself, or so she had managed to convince herself. In reality, she didn't want the complicate things. "Let's just forget about it alright?"
Kenji nodded a second time, and then a silent interlude of silence had slipped into the conversation. “So… Lieutenant, are you going to stand there all day or are you going to invite me in?” Alundres asked earnestly.
Even in Kayashi’s current state of drowsiness, she could tell he had stiffened visibly. “Lieutenant, normally that is frowned-”
“Save it Ken, this wouldn’t be first time I’ve been in your quarters,” she interrupted, then attempted to push passed him. This close proximity was slightly unsettling to Kayashi, however he managed.
He could smell the strawberry shampoo she had used in the shower earlier that morning still floating around her hair. Eventually Kayashi ceased resisting, letting out a sigh of resignation as Alundres promptly made herself comfortable on his bunk. ‘What does she think she’s doing?’
Lorraine made a giggling sound, quite unlike a military professional, and looked in Kayashi’s direction. “Now that I think about it Ken, your room will make a nice storage place for my stuff,” she commented with a wicked grin.
9:37 am
Tuatha de Danaan (Docked at Launch Harbour)
The crew of the Tuatha de Danaan scurried about, making preparations for the noon launch. The environment was hectic and noisy. The intercom was sounding every other minute, supplies for the next voyage were being stockpiled in the storage bays. In one of the narrow corridors of the submarine, the captain was leading the new crew member towards her office. Nothing had been said as they made their way there. The only sounds audible were the clicks of footwear, the constant breathing of both individuals, and the low buzz of the fluorescent lighting. Then, as if out of nowhere, the captain halted at one door. She then produced a keycard from her skirt pocket and slid it through the card reader. With a soft whirring of machinery, the slender grey door permitted the pair access.
Captain Testarossa extended her arm, motioning to the room, “After you Lieutenant.”
“Captain,” he acknowledged, slipping into the spacious office.
After the captain slid in she punched a button on the wall to close the door, and then fumbled for the light switch. Soon the room was soaked in blue tinted light. “Blue Captain?” he questioned, giving her a glance
Tessa gave him a weak smile, “It’s not as sensitive on my eyes, Lieutenant,” she explained afterwards. “Please make yourself comfortable,” Tessa requested, gesturing to the cushioned swivel chair in front of her desk.
Kayashi complied and seated himself, then he took some time to study the walls. They were covered in various forms of art and plants. They gave the office a very warm and artsy milieu, which Kayashi found he could easily get used to. Captain Testarossa sat herself behind the large desk and then reached into a desk drawer. "Before I brief you on your assignment Lieutenant, I was asked by the XVF Project staff to question you about what exactly caused the event yesterday," she explained, placing a tape recorder on the desk.
Kayashi's posture immediately straightened as the captain depressed the record button. "First of all, state your name and rank for the record."
"Lieutenant Kenji Kayashi, Flight and Air Combat Specialist," he announced crisply and clearly.
"Now Lieutenant Kayashi, please recount what happened leading up to the sudden drop in altitude."
Kayashi was ready for this, "I was lowering the attitude of my aircraft preparing for a relatively harmless low g rotation. My aircraft then experienced an unexplained power failure. I do not believe it was a flameout. I lost control and there was an increase of negative gravity. I experienced a severe redout. This is likely the time at which I had started the sharp downwards descent. Sometime after, I managed to initiate the emergency landing procedure," then Kayashi smiled sadly, "I believe the emergency landing system needs some retooling, the sudden change in my aircraft’s altitude created an increase positive gravity. I must have lost consciousness after that."
The captain nodded, pencilling down her own thoughts on paper attached to a clipboard. She then trained her eyes on the lieutenant after he had finished, "Any further comments Lieutenant?"
"None Captain."
Tessa hit the stop button on the small black instrument. "Thank you for your report Lieutenant, now on to the main reason you are here," she announced, pulling out another drawer, and then tossing a file folder across the table.
The words "Classification Level 1" had been stamped across the orange folder in bold red letters. Kayashi eyed the captain while opening it up, revealing a snapshot of a blue-haired schoolgirl, looking around the age of thirteen. "The picture is dated, she's looks more mature now." the platinum haired captain commented.
He scanned through the profile section of the papers, then onto the mission objectives. He returned his gaze to the captain, who was reciprocating. "Captain, my mission is to shadow this girl and insure that she is safe, secure and unharmed?" he whispered, flabbergasted.
Testarossa gave him a curt nod, "That is correct Lieutenant. She is a Whispered, and attempts on her have already been made. I'm sure you are aware of what could happen should certain unscrupulous groups get their hands on a Whispered?" she questioned, tilting her head to the right.
Understanding flooded through Kayashi's mind "I understand perfectly Captain," he acknowledged.
"Excellent, I would like to inform you that even though it is preferable to remain undercover, you are authorized to reveal your true nature to your charge, and only your charge should the need arise."
"Captain, that is acceptable?"
"Miss Chidori is already aware of her former... bodyguards, and Mithril, in fact, she has even visited this sub-"
Breaking protocol, the lieutenant interrupted her, "Captain! Is she trustworthy?" he gasped.
Tessa ignored the fact that a subordinate had disregarded protocol, "As far as I can tell she has not told a soul, and I've had the privilege of meeting with her, she seems trustworthy enough."
The captain swivelled her large grey chair to face the cabinet behind her. Rummaging through the boxes mounted there, she eventually revealed another orange folder and a photographic camera. Kayashi's curiosity rose considerably. "Alright Lieutenant, it's time to fill out your documents. These are for your Japanese citizenship, your school enrolment, and for the apartment we've booked for you," she explained. "You will be attending Jindai Upper High School. Your name, Kazuya Nakajima," Kenji stiffened immediately. "Your cover story is: You were born in Minato Ward in Tokyo. You and your family moved to Kyoto subsequently after birth. You attended school there until lower high school. For two years you attended school in British Columbia, Canada, that explains your excellent English skills," she paused, to make sure he was following. "Then that brings us to the present, immediately after British Columbia, your family sent you here to live by yourself and complete your final year of school. Your family supports you by sending checks weekly, is that alright?"
"Captain..." Kayashi objected, "I think it would be easier for me if I my father was an English teacher. That way, I won't have students and teachers alike asking me annoying questions about Canada that I cannot answer," he explained in a low tone, leaning forward.
"I believe that would be acceptable!" she concurred.
If one could get over the fact that this very young woman was a captain at seventeen, one would be able to see why she had achieved such a feat. "Now that we have that sorted out, all you have to do is sign the papers. You will receive your regular salary, along with danger pay, a ten percent bonus. I don't believe I have to mention that you receive full benefits and insurance," she went on, giggling at her little joke. She took the Polaroid camera into her hands, checking if it was in working condition.
Kayashi found it in himself to smile at the much needed humour. "Now Lieutenant, say cheese!"

Quite boring eh?
Yeah, yeah. I know I said that Kaname was actually gonna be doing stuff and all, but... I had to create some background or whatever now.
The next chapter is gonna start right in Tokyo probably with Kaz all pumped and ready to go (he took his daily dose of roids)
Yeah... so, I'll try writing the much anticipated Part 4 tomorrow.
I encourage you guys to point out some things that are wrong or could be improved, because you are my beta readers, I have no one else for that job, heh.

Hehe, maybe in other countries. In Canada here we're usually bagging on the US 24/7... kinda weird.
Yeah, but anyways, I gotta go to school soon. Hopefully by Study Block I won't have recieved any large assignments that I may want a head start on.

Chrysanthemum Apartments
Ota-ku, Tokyo-to
The trip to Tokyo had been at a leisurely pace. First a submarine ride, then a helicopter to an American Air Base in Okinawa, then a calm cruise on a private plane. He received his papers at Customs through some embedded Mithril agents. Everything was in order, now it was all up to the man to do his job.
Lieutenant Kenji Kayashi, Flight and Air Combat Specialist and Experimental Combat Pilot, was now officially Kazuya Nakajima, a new student at Jindai Upper High School. The suite Mithril had arranged for him was located near the bay, giving him a fantastic view of the Pacific Ocean from his balcony. The sun had already started setting, calling
the end to a beautiful day in Tokyo. Nakajima's apartment was spacious, with two bedrooms, two washrooms, a kitchenette with a microwave oven and refrigerator already installed, and vast living room. In his mind, the
accommodations were a little too much, especially since he would have readily accepted a small bachelor's suite. Somewhere in his mind, however, he suspected that the captain had overseen this. 'Why should I complain anyway?' he asked himself, and the answer was: he shouldn't.
Kazuya was clad in just a plain white t-shirt and black corduroys. His location happened to be in very close
proximity with both the Urzu Team's and Kaname Chidori's apartments, for strategic reasons naturally. The pilot-turned-undercover operate entered the spare bedroom where the weapons and surveillance equipment had been set up. Periodically he'd check on the subject to ascertain that everything was well. After doing so, Nakajima decided he'd
sleep early. He wasn't experiencing any jet-lag, however he was tired from the arduous journey.
Filtering through the drapes was the mellow, orange glow of setting sunlight. Tomorrow was guaranteed to be a day full of adjusting. He hoped he could find the school in the maze of streets...

"Wake up Kana-chan!" squealed a bird shaped object, being held tightly in the arms of its unconscious owner. Its incessant cries only halted when the blue-haired class representative slammed on the alarm clock's head.
"Why does that thing always end up in my hands when I wake up?" Kaname grumbled to herself as she crawled out of the wrinkled white sheets. The young woman clad in her blue and white striped pajamas trudged to the
bathroom to bathe herself, stumbling over miscellaneous items along the way. A smile only crept onto her face after hot
jets of water rushing down her naked body.
Not wanting to trade the steamy sauna for the cold air that would inevitably greet her once she stepped out,
Kaname decided to indulge in a longer-than-usual shower. She had no idea that someone was at least listening in to her
soft humming of her favourite lullaby. After the hot water supply ran dry, or cold, she finally decided it was time to
face the outside world.
Within minutes, Kaname Chidori was looking prim and ready to go. The final touch to her look was always
the red bow she tied loosely around her lengthy locks. Her first meal of the day was some leftover chow mein noodles
from last night's takeout. She washed her bowl of noodles down with a glass of water; now she was ready to go.
Kaname dashed out the door with her bookbag, the oceanic hair trailing behind her.
Chrysanthemum Apartments
He was ready. He had been ready since precisely 6 in the morning. Already clad in his dark school uniform, he
placed the headset down onto the table in the spare bedroom. Kaname Chidori had just existed her apartment, it was time
to roll. Hidden underneath the bed were ammunition and weapons to deliver that ammunition. A pair of Mithril
Ventrex semi-automatic was his weapon of choice for today. They were small, they were elegant, they were handguns.
He stuffed several clips of tranquillizer rounds in the right pocket of his school-issued jacket. The lethal rounds
resided in his left pocket. "Left: kill. Right: sleep. Left: kill. Right: sleep," he repeated the mantra in a hushed voice,
getting himself to remember which gun held which type of rounds.
He made a detour to the spare bathroom, staring hard into the mirror. The messy blue hair still shrouded parts
of his face, but both his moustache and beard had been shaved off cleanly, leaving no traces of what used to be there. "I
am Nakajima Kazuya," he stated to his reflection, mimicking his lip motions. Nakajima felt ready for liftoff, and a
confident smile creeping onto his face reflected that feeling. "Phase One: Find School."
Jindai Upper High School
Kaname, in her white and viridian school uniform, silently strolled through the gates of Jindai High. 'Nice
clear... that's strange, it's usually pouring right now.' Tokyo was indeed experiencing balmy weather. The sun,
unobstructed by cloud cover, was releasing its payload of radiation continually. The only other thing that could be seen
above was the haze of the azure ozone, lying inert above the city. Had Sousuke been here, placid moments like these
would have exploded into chaos. 'But he's not here.'
Nakajima witnessed her sigh escape those soft cherry lips, and he could see the way she trudged down the
path. Even with her obvious low spirits, the casual way in which she walked was enchanting, alluring... Kazuya was
noting this from a purely objective standpoint of course.
"Target acquired," murmured the operative to himself behind the shrubs. Nakajima patted himself on the back
for successfully navigating the perilous and flooded streets and transportation of Tokyo while tailing a schoolgirl. 'All
in a day's work.'
Blending into the urban breed was not hard for the pilot, being born in a large urban center had it's advantages
after all. He still had to remind himself to relax his movements, since he was constantly finding himself almost
marching.
A female crying "Kana-chan!" caught Kazuya's attention immediately. He swivelled his attention to the his
right, and there she was... Moon-shaped spectacles, brown hair in pigtails tied by green ribbons, she wore the same
uniform as Kaname Chidori. Nakajima noticed a metallic grey digital camera swinging wildly around her neck as she
ran towards his charge. "Possible friendly acquired," he stated in a faint whisper, ready to confirm with the directional
microphone in his briefcase since they were exiting audible range.
The was a rustle in the shrubs beside him, but Nakajima didn't look up as he was busy digging through case.
"Who's behind there?" a soft voice inquired from his right.
The voyeur froze, and then slowly... shifted his eyes to the source of the voice. He had dark brown hair and
rounded prescription glasses. Nakajima mentally noted what he was wearing 'A student.' Nakajima thought fast "Uh...
eh... I thought I heard some strange noises so I decided to check it out..."
If Kazuya was not successful in convincing him, the other schoolboy never showed it in his expression.
"Really... well, I'm Kazama Shinji, I don't think I've seen you before," he greeted, taking a spot in the bushes beside him,
crouching below the greenery.
Kazuya kept his calm "Nakajima Kazuya. I just transferred here today, I'm from Kyoto," he explained coolly,
never missing a beat.
"Heh, interesting, but we should get inside, the class will start soon. Do you know what classroom you're in?"
Shinji asked as he rose from the bushes, picking up his black bookbag from the brown soil.
"Classroom? 3-4," Nakajima responded, closing his ebony-toned briefcase and dusting off his dark pants and
following Kazama.
Shinji's brown eyes brightened instantly, "Hey, we're in the same class. Cool, I'll show you around if you'd
like," he offered amicably.
Unbeknownst to both of the students, they were receiving odd glances from other students. Two males coming
out from behind the bushes instantly stimulated their imaginations. In conversing with Shinji, Kazuya discovered his
love for Arm Slaves and nearly anything else military-related. Nakajima mentioned briefly on his passion for flight and
they became instant friends. "You should watch out for our class rep, her name's Chidori Kaname-san," he had advised
as the travelled up the white stairs to class. "She's a good person but watch where you step."
The comments cause the blue-haired agent to grin, "Thanks for the heads up." Finally, they entered the class,
already filling with students. Kaname Chidori was surrounded by several of her peers. Now she was animated and
cheerful, as far as Kazuya could tell anyway. Perhaps she was just putting up a facade like many people did. The level
of chatter rose steadily as more teenage students entered and took their seats. The classroom was decorated with kanji
script and manga panels littered on the walls. Ms. Kagurazaka, the classroom instructor, finally arrive at 8:15, ready to
roll. Kazuya Nakajima, embedded bodyguard, approached the attractive brunette to explain his situation.
"So Chidori-san, how was your weekend, did you have fun at the islands?"
"How's Sagara-san?"
"Did you manage to complete the homework Fujisaki-sensei gave us?"
All of these questions came at her and she answered them vibrantly as if nothing were wrong. "The time off
was great!" In truth, it had been another detour to Mithril. The private plane they were on was diverted to the Aquila
Islands, a group of islands that she didn't even know existed, instead of their true destination: Okinawa. Sousuke had
wanted to make up for the hijacking last year, and blue girl readily accepted.
Kaname sighed, thinking back to the events that unfolded afterwards. She was treated to banquet held in her
honour and was given some award for courage. Another highlight had been watching top secret aircraft perform in
initialization tests. 'Wait a minute... that jet that went down looked a lot like one of those,' she suddenly realized. She
had even seen one of the pilots, a woman actually, which surprised her. The other was always huddled in his craft
going through diagnostics and aircraft procedures. She had to admit, it was fun, and she had the opportunity
experience things that Shinji would sell his soul for, but what she really wanted was some time alone with Sousuke.
Then the fateful call. Just as the two were enjoying a rather gorgeous Pacific sunset out on one of the docks,
duty called. It was "just a short-term assignment in the Middle East," Captain Testarossa had said. Kaname was now
wary of Sousuke's commanding officer. Ever since her two week stint at Jindai, she was sure that she would stop at
nothing to capture Sagara's attention.
While reflecting on the weekend's events, Kyouko, Kaname's closest of friends was having a photo spree from
the various facial expressions her friend was exhibiting throughout the reminiscing of days gone. "Kyouko, I think your
batteries will run out if you keep pushing that button," Kaname mumbled flatly, the palm of her right hand supporting
her chin.
Kyouko paused momentarily, "It's alright Kana-chan, I bought extras on Friday!" she exclaimed and continued
on.
"You might now have a camera if you keep pushing that button," replied Kaname, not very pleased. The girls
surrounding them all glanced nervously at each other, the class representative's mood was becoming stormy.
The smile from Kyouko's face was no longer present while a concerned look replaced it, and her trigger finger
ceased clicking. "You don't look to happy anymore Kana-chan... You're not your usual self," her tone displayed the
concern.
She just exploded, she couldn't contain herself. "Of course I'm not! You'd understand if you knew what
happened!" she choked out.
Dead silence. Like the deafening noise after a jet dropped the bomb, and at the hypocenter of it was Kaname
Chidori, well-respected Class Representative and Vice President of the Student Council. Not everyone was clear on
what had just happened or why; however, everyone knew that the time bomb had just detonated. Eri Kagurazaka
dispelled the silence with the clearing of her throat. Everyone acted on this signal and diverted their undivided
attention to the front. "Class, I'd like you to meet a new student of ours from Kyoto," she announced, then she
whispered to the newcomer beside her, "Just introduce yourself."
Nakajima Kazuya gave her a curt nod and stood at attention, placing his briefcase on the floor in front of him,
analyzing the group he saw before him. He allowed himself a deep breath, then totally committed to the charade,
ignoring the dull aching that had just commenced assaulting his head. "Hello everyone, I am Nakajima Kazuya. It's a
pleasure," he spoke, projecting his voice towards the back. Several voices relayed comments to each other in a hushed
manner.
"Any questions for Nakajima-san?" questioned Ms. Kagurazaka, eyeing the students expectantly. A number of
hands shot up like ejection seats from an airplane. Kagurazaka nodded to one female "Go ahead Minami-san,"
The girl with indigo hair commenced. "Nakajima-san, what interest you the most--I mean, what are your
interests, hobbies?" she asked, fumbling through her question. Some of her classmates chuckled and giggled, and her
cheeks began to turn colour.
Nakajima didn't need to think about this one. "I enjoy electronic music, and anything to do with flight mainly.
My hobbies would be reading and listening to music I suppose," he responded quickly.
"Next question? Machii-san."
Toshio Machii posed his question, "Has the USSR placed the S-37 Berkut into active service, or is it still an
experimental craft?"
Nakajima's grin returned, a possible ally. "Actually, the S-37 has been re-designated the Su-47 and the
Soviets are phasing them in as we speak," replied, utilizing his expert knowledge on the subject.
Another hand rose, now the teacher let Kazuya choose. A petite and shy looking boy was next, he had neatly
combed black hair. "Where were you born?" he said softly and silently.
'Minato...' "I was born in Minato-ku right here in Tokyo actually, my family and I moved to Kyoto shortly
afterwards. Any others?" He saw Shinji's hand rise. "Kazama Shinji-san?"
"I've heard about conflicting stories about how well an M9 Gernsback can engage aerial targets. Could you
clear that up?"
Nakajima had to think about this one, but his mild cranial pain was hampering his thought processes. Mithril
deployed M9s regularly for deep strike and rescue missions. They did not engage aircraft much. "Well... the M9's
primary function is to engage ground targets, it's an anti-surface vehicle. I've heard stories about an M9 engaging a
HIND helicopter and decimating it," Nakajima now stroked his chin. "However, if up against... even an Su-27 Flanker,
I don't really believe it has much of a chance. M9s may be able to take a beating but they aren't very mobile."
More hands came up, but Ms. Kagurazaka intervened, "I believe that's enough for now. If you wish to gain
more information from Nakajima-san, please do so on your own time. Now, let's get on to today's assignment," she
turned to Kazuya, "Nakajima-san, you may sit behind Chidori-san, and you will receive your necessary materials after
school. Chidori-san, please raise your hand." Nakajima complied and retrieved his suitcase from the floor and took a
seat behind Kaname Chidori, who incidentally, never raised her hand to identify herself. ‘Vapour 9, engage,’ and he
was now in range.

Ota-ku, Tokyo-to
The trip to Tokyo had been at a leisurely pace. First a submarine ride, then a helicopter to an American Air Base in Okinawa, then a calm cruise on a private plane. He received his papers at Customs through some embedded Mithril agents. Everything was in order, now it was all up to the man to do his job.

i'm apalled by the slow pace of your releases. the fact that i like the story doesn't help. lol.
i'm not an expert on japanese relations, but isn't classmates referring to each other by last name and -san just a bit unusual?
well, please post part 5 soon. i'm looking forward to your hero introducing himself to kaname, if that's on the tasklist. i suppose she's figured him out by now, that's why she didn't raise her hand?
