Manga volume 5, question on dialogue

Post by woman22980 »

Hey all, I just got my hands on volume 5 of the FMP manga (there is much rejoicing!) however I don't understand what's meant by the last scene. The last chapter, last page of the manga story, Kaname asks Sosuke "Do you get the feeling that we missed out on something?" as they look on at their friends enjoying a barbecue, and Sosuke answers with "You're imagining things." So.... umm.... ??? Does it subtlety mean that they didn't miss anything with their friends because they had a special experience of their own? The panels don't really seem to read that way to me, but I'm open to suggestions, corrections, or other interpretations.

BTW, Sosuke in camo gear.... SEXY!!!

I haven't the faintest idea what they may be refering to. But it can also be a translation fopah.

Or it can be that they got attacked twice, ended up in a cave during a rain storm, and upon arriving, they see their friends bbq'ing and having a great time not even noticing that the two of them were missing.

maybe it's not missed out on something, but missed something. that would make more sense to Sousuke's response

It didn't occur to me that it might be a translation error.... but both of your ideas make sense in the context. So Kaname says "... we missed something?" and they're both disgusted that their friends didn't even notice their absence, thus Sosuke's sarcastic reply of "you're imagining things."

Do translation errors like this (that alter the meaning of an event in the manga) happen that often? I can understand that they might not translate literally whatever's said, so much various cultural stuff just isn't going to mean anything to a US audience and should be altered, but this... I guess the person editing already understood what was going on, and so it wouldn't occur to them that it might not make sense to others.

Thank you Dannan and Killer, what you said really helps make the scene make sense. :)

Don't take translations literally, some things can really be translated fully from japanese to english...

No scans??? :(

Speaking of which, ADV hasn't announced an English release date for #6 or #7 yet, have they? It doesn't say so on their website, but then their website isn't exactly the most up-to-date thing I've seen either.... and I don't usually get NewType (although I like it) because it's just so expensive. $10 for a magazine, when that will buy me a new manga novel of any series I read...

you are definitely welcome, and yes, it happens all the time, even in another high quality manga titled Love Hina... I mean Full Metal Panic!

I went to the bookstore today and saw Vol5. Currently short on cash so I just read it there ;).

I'm guessing what Kaname meant at the end is just that Sousuke and her missed out on some fun their friends were having, not that they were missed... eh.

I liked the story of Tessa's little trip too. So the town's been flooded since 5 years ago, but what really happened? Was she really at that town? Was is 5 years ago that she was there instead? Or did she just imagine that for 2 days straight? It's like an Outer Limits/Twilight Zone episode.

I'm glad I finally checked out vol5, now I know where the scene of Tessa in the field of Sunflowers come from. :-D

That'd be my theory on it myself. There's a fair bit of ghost tales
revolving around a person entering a ghost town and living a life
there for a bit before returning to the real world...
