Mithril not realistic? Ha.
If you actually look at Mithril's Agenda and it's type of operations...It's not standard warfare...nor is it black ops. It's more of a grey type of operations. A discussion with some righteous asshole who can't like anything that isn't completely accurate...not even enjoy it and get his kicks from it brought this up. Mithril is funded by Martin Marrieta (Lockheed Martin) and several other front companies. But this friend bring up the point that mithril isn't pratical and has no basis for existing. International bands of mercenary dogooders that have the best equipment and the like...In a sense...he decries it saying it doesn't work. That's the standard objection once you get pass arm slaves...that Mithril is stupid and doesn't work because it isn't realistic. I'd be inclined to say otherwise. Mithril is a very practical organization. These front companies manufacture products. They need viable test centers areas for these. Because military contracts aren't handed out on silver platters...Mithril is their testing ground. The fact that they do good merely gives them credibility if their operations are ever found out. Because they're a good vigilante group. The reason they pay their operative so highly...is because they're test pilots who actually enter combat. It's no small feat that they pay 500,000 grand a year to SRT pilots.
The only way I think they can afford to pay the pilots like that...is the front companies take hits every year for their idelogical philanthropy...or they make money off the missions they perform. For example...Drug Factories. They must do something with all that. Get paid by someone...the same with terrorist situations...they get paid in that manner...by the governments would couldn't rescue hostages. As for the arms deal...It's 'give us the cash for the nuke or we give it to the people who paid for it'. The combat testing that Mithril's products get...must be a pretty good quirk.
Furthermore with the Soviet Union existing...anything Mithril did to render them a little less capable in whatever areas would be greatly appreciated by NATO and the US. Worthy even of Monentary Compensation. The cold war (later part) was about preventing the spread of communism and attacking it directly...rather than containing it. Assuming that such an ideology persisted in the timeline...Mithril would be handsomely paid by the US for its actions. So it strikes me as even more likely...given that the US did ANYTHING...to stop the spread. Some highly unethical things...some very much so...But it needed to be stopped. If Mithril could do it...and remain anonymous and unconnected...that's yet another nail in the coffin of Mithril doubters.
So you can take what I've said...analyze it...comment on it...correct it...and then throw it in the face of assholes who think Mithril doesn't work. This is my conjectures on the topic...but I just enjoy the series anyway...geopolitically accurate or not.

Somehow, I doubt Mithril was paid by any countries for their deeds. But they do have front companies which helps them earn big bucks. Besides, they are probably the only organization dedicated to the protection of Whispered. Cause they're independent from other countries.

Just finished two books about the KGB and GRU, and both went into
fairly deep detail as to how much financial power -- cash and valuable
minerals -- both had amassed and controlled over the Cold War. Without
going into figures, both claimed they had sufficient financial resources
to 'influence smaller countries,' so considering how Mithril straddles
both sides of the fence, it's quite resonable that some of those 'black'
funding techniques have been passed along.
As for the Tech side that Andrei's pointed out... possibly. Crazy thing
is stuff like that may be happening, but like good spy stories, they
never'll see the light of day, and if they ever do, someone's likely to
take you for a crank.
Scenario reminds me of that elcheapo movie MegaForce

On a good day, a Tomahawk can fly into the door of a two-car garage at the distance of several hundred miles. And that can ruin your whole day.

LOL, well they never explain what happens to those illegal goods after they capture it. Yes, i know some of the time it gets destroyed during combat, but there's got to be other operations going on where the cargo isn't destroyed. I belive they seize it and sell it to their front companies for profit.

Wait a minute...this supposedly good organization would want to get illegal goods and sell them for profit?
Perhaps they sell it to the companies if it's higher tech or something they'd want to buy. But not just for the heck of it. Smuggling. Lol!
That's the only possible explanation, Mythril is a huge organization with the latest tech. The total cost to keep it in operation is pheneomenol...er...i think i spelled that wrong... so they have to do something with the illegal cargo. I don't think they would waste it by destroying it. Not a logical solution.

"Can I help you?, "you know this section is.." she broke off her sentence as the man walked towards her and nodded, "I think you can Captain".
Tessa looked down, "I haven't been called Captain in 4 years," Wha..what do you want?"
He gave her a devious grin, "I'm here to make sure you keep your promise."

no way, would u turn over 100 million worth of drugs to the authorities? They need the money so they probably give it to their pharmacetical front companies. Money is money.Sgt. Sagara Sousuke wrote:Illegal stuff? What kind of illegal stuff? Like drugs? Maybe they sell 'em to hospitals.
Seriously, they'll probably leave it for the country's authorities to confiscate them.
