Time 10 years ago 1600 hours location: the burnt-out ruin of a humanitarian aid station southern region Helmajistan.

The child curled up in the corner of a still burning hut tears still running down his face. The choppers and monsters were gone the fires still burned his mother lay across from him curled in the same pose she had taken when she shielded him from the fire and shots. In his mind he could still see the scared tan features of the one they had called Gauron.

The door crashed in.
“HAY WE GOT A LIVE ONE HERE!!”

It was another he wore the same uniform and gear as the others. The Boy wet is pants and tried to hide him self in the shadows.

“Hay buddy its okay we aren’t going to hurt you.”

Nothing they said any made since to the Boy.
The light changed the sunlight beamed in to the room and a man seemed to form in the center he wore a uniform more formal then the others but still identical. To the boy’s eyes he was different his silver hair long and tied back his silver beard and mustache immaculate as if he were a gentleman out on the town.
He approached the frightened child with out any animosity. And then he spoke and the child under stood

“Easy there child my name is Andrei, Andrei Kalinin can you tell me you name?”

His voice was rich and deep.

“Sssssagara SsHinji Sagara”

“Well Shinji tell me what happened here?”

“Sousuke where is Sousuke please find my brother Sousuke.”

“ Look Around find other survivors NOW!! ”

“ My people will help your brother now please tell me what happened here?”

“Mo-monster Go-go Gauron!!”

Andrei embraced Shinji as a father would embrace his son.
“I am so sorry child this crime will be righted your brother will survive I swear to you I will find him and insure his safety.”
“Th-thank you”

“Now please rest.”

Shinji passed out in the man’s arms.

Time 0200 hours Location: an island out side Chinese territorial waters

Shinji opened his eyes and took in his surroundings. He lay in the poorly lit tent his bed draped in a mosquito net a young village girl sleeping on his arm. Of all the thing that he could be thinking of there were only two things on hiss mind first was this Kashim what was he like who was he was he preparing for his death or trying to fool him self into thinking he would win or would he chicken out. Second Sousuke, Andrei Kalinin the man who had saved Shinji had told him that there had been no sign of Sousuke in the camp. How had Sousuke survived and what was he like.

“Sousuke would be sixteen now I wonder has he fallen in love yet? Oh wait Sousuke had a harem of girls in the village no doubt he is still breaking women’s hearts now. Is he still a prankster? Huh ill find out soon.”

He felt movement He glanced at the girl on his arm since she was stirring no doubt roused by his self-monolog. Since his time in prison had ended he had become a fan of the more beautiful things in life and on of them was women. This girl was but one more to the long list but, there was a chance he might loose to Kashim. He decided to savor her once more.

Kaname and the others had convinced the captain to place Sousuke on a lighter than usual duty schedule. Sousuke had protested but accepted the assignment. Kaname decided not to stray far from him. He was looking stronger but was still having problems sleeping his moodiness was under control but there were still times when he seemed to be about to break down and once she even caught him crying. When she had first met Sousuke she had found him interesting but thought he was a cold nut case then the plane was hijacked and she learned the truth, there is some thing endearing about some one who gives up most of there life to protect another. The more she got to now Sousuke the more she came to realize that he was a human being with flaws and weaknesses over the time she had known him she had seen him go from a constant scowl to an intermittent smile. And Sousuke had a great smile she wished she could see it more often. She also wished she saw the look currently on his face a loot less.
He stood there staring at Arbalest like it was an endless abyss, the question no doubt on his mind was was something staring back?
“Sousuke you starting to scare me.”
“Pardon… oh sorry Kaname.”
“It doesn’t look any different to me.”
“It’s not most of the changes are internal but the largest change is they added a new rifle with an expandable stock. Other wise it’s the same unit.”
“You don’t like arbalest do you?”
“No I don’t every time I use it some one I care for is hurt.”
“Sousuke was it you who almost killed Kurtz in kastka”
“No…”
“Did you almost destroy Tokyo?”
“Again no but.”
“Did you kill those troops in Helmajistan?”
“No…”
“Did you hurt Mao or kill your friends?”
“Again negative is there a point to this line of questioning?”
“Yes there is Sousuke Quit punishing your self for other peoples crimes. Your only human and you have your limits like all of us. One of your best qualities is your willing ness to help others but you can’t be every where at once and even you have your limits.”
“But Kaname…”
“Look why don’t you think that over I have to work on that art assignment we got yesterday ill see yah latter.”
Sousuke watched as she left the hanger.
“She’s is right you know.”
Sousuke turned and saw Dr. Livingston he was wearing coveralls and lacked the jewelry he wore earlier his hands and face were covered in mech lubricates.
“ I don’t under stand.”
“Look Sousuke in the briefing I told you that I had confidence in you and I do but I also under stand that you are still a young man not quite yet an adult this means that at times you are unstable and lack control at times. But you fight only for what you believe in. and you put all of your heart in to your fighting but you view arbalest as some thing other than what it is.”
“Then what is it? Then”
“You. Mr. Sagara it is you.”
“What do you mean it is me?”
“Mr. Sagara holds out your hands.”
Sousuke complied. Livingston reached in to a box near by and picked out a heaping hand full of small black objects he then dropped the pile in Sousuke’s hands
“Those are computer chips Mr. Sagara to be precise they were all the same chip LB 426 that is the chip that links a human mind to the A.I. and through the A.I. the lambda driver each one of those chips is burnt out do you know why?”
“No”
“Those chips were used in a series of tests to see if others could use Arbalest the test all failed no mater the user only one person can use arbalest and that person is Staff Sergeant Sousuke Sagara. But you look at Arbalest as a puppet you should not it is your will the lambda driver is your will given form the power comes from you I know this because the lambda driver is my specialty but even I don’t know why only you can use it of course there are no real experts when it comes to lambda drivers you call it unstable well it is only as stable as its user.”
He walked off leaving Sousuke in the shadow of Arbalest, Holding a hand full of chard plastic
