Voices of a Distant Star II

Post by Jae »

Okay, not exactly.
Its a new film from the same guy (otherwise its not related to Voices).

Don't have a link to this (got it in a merchant email):
+ADV Acquires 'The Place Promised in Our Early Days' By the Creator of
'Voices of a Distant Star'
The Anime News Network is reporting that ADV Films has acquired the
rights to a feature-length anime
film from Makoto Shinkai, the creator of Voices of a Distant Star, a
short, poetic science fiction
OAV that he made almost entirely by himself on his Apple G4 computer.
The Place Promised in Our
Early Days is a 91-minute anime feature that will open in Japanese
theaters next month. In his new
film Shinkai explores another form of science fiction, alternate
history, with a story set in
different post World War II timeline in which Japan's most northern
island, Hokkaido is controlled
by the Soviet Union, while the rest of Japan is occupied by the U.S.
Three teenager living on the
northern most shore of the U.S. zone spot an enormous tower being
constructed on the southern
shore of Hokkaido, and the story unfolds as the kids attempt to
discover the secrets of the tower.

ADV has not set a firm price or release date for The Place Promised in
Our Early Days, but a spokesman
told the Anime News Network that the film would be released in 2005.
The audience applauded, even though it was not clear what Bush meant.

Sounds quite interesting Jae, and I'm not even a fan of alternate history. Wonder who else will be involved in this and in what capacity. Part of the charm of Voices is that it has a unity of vision on the order of a novel because it was one man creating it with the aid of his wife for voices.

I saw this on Anime News Network, and it has me a bit confused as to what they actually mean. http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/article.php?id=5616

Awww...

Looks like ADV's outgrown its communications policy.

I think what they mean is, ADV heard japanese producer wants to release movie here. ADV sent some people to check it out, and I guess some other ADV dude, 'Mr Buck', thought they already had a lisence for it and let that slip.

Tho I don't really get this, either:
"Mr. Buck's statement to ANN did not explicitly state that ADV had acquired any rights whatsoever (it only stated that they would be releasing it)."

I mean, if Mr Buck said ADV will release it, doesn't that directly imply they have some right to it? Its not so simple to back off announcing something that wasn't true, by just stating they didn't directly state what was implied.

Either way, I hope someone will pick it up for release here. I have alot of respect for the dedication and effort that goes into small, indie productions.

Also the thread linked off that ANN page suggests that its still a small crew.
The audience applauded, even though it was not clear what Bush meant.

I've seen Shinkai's Voices of a Distant Star and She and Her Cat. They're both very good. So I'm also interested in seeing this other OAV. One 90 min episode? That's like a movie :).

About Voices, I can't get over the fact the girl pilots her mech in her school uniform ;). Oh, and thinking about Voices reminds me of Ender's Game... an idea I had a while ago. Well, kids fighting aliens far away... I'm gonna start a new topic about that. :-D

"Can I help you?, "you know this section is.." she broke off her sentence as the man walked towards her and nodded, "I think you can Captain".
Tessa looked down, "I haven't been called Captain in 4 years," Wha..what do you want?"
He gave her a devious grin, "I'm here to make sure you keep your promise."
