Kalinin/Sousuke backstory (Spoilers!)
I just got the new Dragon magazine this month and in it was the first part of a special story about Kalinin and Sousuke's past- some of the pictures were awesome, so I wanted to scan them in for anyone who might want to see them (btw, they meet about 12 years earlier, when Sousuke is about 3 or 4 years old):

There was also a funny little comic that I edited into English in the same issue:

"Can I help you?, "you know this section is.." she broke off her sentence as the man walked towards her and nodded, "I think you can Captain".
Tessa looked down, "I haven't been called Captain in 4 years," Wha..what do you want?"
He gave her a devious grin, "I'm here to make sure you keep your promise."

There are some nice new stories. I find very funny the little comic with an overly too sweet Kalinin.
However, seeing those little scans and remembering the facts Sagara has said about Kalinin, I have some questions.
Sagara once has said himself and Kalinin were enemies.
From I know of the FMP storyline, it looks Sagara has seen back Kalinin after his enrolling in Mithril.
By those new episodes of the manga, I find some problems in the FMP plot about Kalinin and Sagara past.
If the first meeting between them when Kalinin was still a Russian soldier and Sagara a little kid, when did they become enemies?

Big 'End of Day by Day' (novel) spoilers!!!!! (these illustrations are also from the novel series, not the manga)
Sousuke was a soldier before he begun to fight for the Afghan resistance at the age of eight. He was trained as a child as Soviet assassin and sent to Afghanistan for a mission at the age of seven (if I remember correctly. Please correct me if I've made a mistake). So perhaps Kalinin helped to train him there. Ten when Sousuke was adopted by the man he was supposed to kill in Afganistan, Sousuke and Kalinin ended up on different sides of the war.

Maybe, but we all assumed this was when Sousuke was somewhere around the age of 8-11, and in those images Sousuke is no older than three, so long before he was in Afghanistan.
Maybe it's one of those old conflicts between novels and the series/movies/etc based upon them; the people writing the anime didn't know what Gatou had in mind (he probably didn't even know at the time).
It could be a case of Gatou thinking, "Hey, this would be a really good idea! Damn, I already said they were enemies when they first met. Oh, well, I don't want to abandon something like this for a small point of continuality."
I don't know how many shows I've seen when they abandon continuality for a good story lines. Damn writers!!
We'll see what's up with it if BokuTachi translates it in time *prays*

In this short story (which is told from Kalinin's viewpoint, so he is the narrator), Kalinin first meets Sousuke as a toddler when the plane he and his parents are on crash, and Kalinin's team is sent out to find any survivors- he finds Sousuke's mom, still barely alive, and she asks Kalinin to save Sousuke. Since Kalinin is the only one on his ship to speak Japanese, he takes care of Sousuke. They separate when they get to port, and Kalinin says the next time he sees Sousuke they meet as enemies- that's where the story ends, and will be continued in next month's magazine.
