I knew that Kaname was born in 1985 because Full Metal Panic is set in 2001 and she is sixteen.

2001-16 = 1985 => she's probably either a rat (born before feb 19, 1985) or an ox (if after feb 19th 1985). (Or did I goof in calculations some where...)

Dec 24, 1985 would put her in the Ox year.

Assuming that Sousuke & Tessa are the same age as her, then their horoscopes would be pretty off.

I wonder what the other characters would be?

If Kurtz & Mao were 21 (I think?) in 2001...1980, then they'd be Monkeys or Rams...

Kaname and Tessa have the same birthday- Dec 24 1984, which would make them both rats.

I got 1984 from the screencap of the Mithril info sheet on Kaname (in the very first episode).
They don't always vet that sort of info well, so perhaps it's one of those things that vary across format. However, it does make Kaname 16 for the start of the show, set in April 2001.

Whoops, for some reason I always thought they were 21 when the anime started...
