I think Leonard became who he is because he lost himself to 'the whispered' part of him - you know how Tessa talks about how you can lose yourself because of Ressonance?...in order to understand that something like that could happen, there'd have to be some kind of precedence...since it doesn't appear that there are that many whispered around, I would pressume that Tessa knows this because it's what happened with Leonard.
There is litterary evidence to suggest that something of a nature that either corrupted Leonard, or let him leave Mithril after it became known that he was 'corrupt', happened at some point, and that Tessa blames herself over it....That would be at the point where someone, I think it's Kalinin, keeps asking her questions and she's not answering but just looking straight ahead, unwilling to talk about it...
I theorize that it has something to do with the two of them being whispered, and some kind of whispered-experiment where Leonard lost himself, or part of himself, and became evil...it's more obvious in the manga that the power of the whispered is pretty grim, and this theory of mine relies on the idea that this was pressent in the novels as well, and not nearly to the same degree in the anime.
Does that sound all wrong?

Is it just me, or are there way too many talking decapitated heads around these days?

Certainly, in the manga when Kaname had a Whispered episode, it seemed that another personality arose, one that threatened to take over, and she had to force this other personality down. It did appear to be "darker", more ruthless than she was naturally. Probably, one would have to read the novels
to get a better sense of what was supposed to be going on in her mind.

I hadn't really considered that, but yeah, it seems to make sense. Tessa does mention that Leonard isn't the same person he was anymore. I had believed that to mean that he'd just gone bad. But it could be refering to his "evil whispered" taking over.
...All the more reason I'm worried about him becoming reformed... >_<

I hadn't considered that, but yeah, on recollection, it seems that wenever Kaname enters Whispered mode she's more detached...
So maybe, the more you delve into the "Resonance", the greater your chances of losing who you were? Reminds me of this quote of Saiyuki: "As long as someone believes in me, I'll remain true to myself."

Ah, I'm glad I've contributed something failry original then...the implications of the theory are, however, fairly ... grim. Let me try going with it a little (all of it speculation, obviously)
If it is possible to 'turn a whispered evil', through letting them 'lose' part, or all, of their individuality, then that poses certain...questions as to what Amalgam will be doing with Kaname after kidnapping her. How will they extract the black technology if she's unwilling to cooperate (and she will likely be unwilling, because, well, she's feisty) ? - ressonance, or a process similar to what turned leonard evil would seem likely, if my theory was correct, wouldn't it?
Now, the above scenario could be...kinda cheesy...and that speaks against the probability of the theory being correct, I guess. It just seems very far-fetched to initiate a big change like that.
I'm sure, however, that while Kaname is held captive, these things will be explained, and the whispered will be elaborated upon...

Resonance was basically telepathy between Whispereds, and Tessa definately
warned that it was dangerous. Very easy for the persons involved to merge
with one another, resulting most probably in serious psycological damage.
So, it's not a probable scenario for what happened to Leonard, and a fairly risky method of prying information out of Kaname.

I wonder. Resonance has the risk of merging with another Whispered. But what I'm more concerned about is what that other voice is in Kaname's head in the manga. It doesn't seem to be there (or at least not as obvious) in the anime. I wonder if it's in the novels. And if so, what is that voice? Is it another Whispered trying to intentionally merge with her, or is it some kind of dark nature inherent in all Whispered. Whatever that voice is, if something about being a Whispered changed Leonard, I think that's what did it, be it a resonance or otherwise.

Well, I think the manga is a bit closer to the novels than the anime is. As far as I can tell, it's a part of Kaname's psyche connected to her Whispered nature, that want's to basically "be on top"- the Whispered reaction is distressing and frightening to Kaname's normal psyche, and it more or less says "your useless and pathetic, just stand aside". The manga portrays it as
a two Kaname's facing off. I'd look through my manga to find the pertinent sections, but I've got the early shift tomorrow, and I should be signing off...

Actually, the evolution is Novels->1st Season/Manga->2nd season. The manga and 1st season overlapped in development. It was during the 1st season when Gatou decided to combine the 2 independent storylines presented in the novels. Hence the confusion
It would be nice to decide on a storyline before starting a series of novels, but we all know that never happens. LOL
My take on the whispered psyche is similar to how other "supernatural powers" are depicted in other animes. The n00b possessor of the power has to learn how to control it. If they fail, the power overwelms and consumes them. A bit cleche but it works.

Yeah...I can't help but compare the Whispered power to the idea of 'the force' in star wars... I mean, I don't think Kaname will start swinging a lightsabre anytime soon, but come on, Leonard and Vader both start out as good and extremely talented lil' kids, and then they turn to the dark side...
But that's getting ahead of myself, we don't know enough yet to make a comparison like that...so it's just me flashing an idea, nothing more ^_^
